Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

Wedding

The marriage took place at St. Mary’s Church, Clonmany, Co. Donegal of Stephen Masterson son of Joe and Catherine Masterson, Curraghrua, and Claire Doherty daughter of Sean and Marie Doherty, Clonmany, Co. Donegal. Bestman was Henry Masterson, brother of the groom and groomsmen were John Glennon and Michael Heneghan both lifelong friends of Stephen. The chief bridesmaid was Laura Doherty sister of the bride while the bridesmaids were Shauna Doherty sister of the bride and Sinead Kerins, friend of the bride. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Brian Brady. The wedding reception was held in the Ballyliffin Lodge & Spa, Ballyliffin, Co. Donegal.

We wish the happy couple many years of wedded happiness.

Lanesboro/Ballyleague Town Twinning
Since Covid restrictions meant that the Lanesboro/Ballyleague Town Twinning (LBTT) committee could not have meetings things had to lapse. Now that restrictions are lifted everything is beginning to get back to normal. The LBTT committee will be holding an A.G.M. shortly. You are invited to become part of this exciting group, to bring up your ideas to discuss at the meeting. New blood is required and the outgoing committee is asking people to be part of this exciting committee.

Lanesborough has already been twinned with Lanesborough in Massachusetts, USA and have had representatives here in Lanesboro. In fact two of their Fire Department namely Butch Garrity and Max LaCasse carried the banner in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2015 and we look forward to future and exciting links and twinning.

It would be great to see a good number enthusing about this very exciting twinning project and committee. It is a wonderful opportunity for the 30/40/50 generation to involve themselves in the workings and visiting/hosting our twin towns. There are surely new and novel ideas to be had. The LBTT is busy seeking a suitable date for the AGM and hope to be able to announce the date very soon. It appears that late August early September looks the most likely time for the meeting.

Wedding

The civil marriage took place at Hannon’s Hotel, Roscommon on Friday 29th July of Bernadette Smith, daughter of Donald and Myra Smith, Kilmore Cross, Co. Longford and Michael Mc Keown son of Peter and Carmel Mc Keown, Cootehill, Co. Cavan. Chief bridesmaid was Rebecca Smith daughter of the bride. Bestman was John Hogan best friend of the groom. The wedding reception took place at the Yacht Bar, Lanesboro. We wish the happy couple many years of wedded bliss.

Death

We were shocked and saddened on Wednesday last 27th July to learn of the death at Thomond Lodge Nursing Home of Margaret Leckey, Church View in her 96th year. Margaret was a very proud native of her home county of Clare and visited whenever she got the opportunity to visit family and keep up with friends. Margaret met and married Joe Leckey and they lived in Doughill. Joe predeceased her as did her parents, siblings and grandson Ronan Mc Cormack. In later life Margaret moved to Church View and became a very active member of our local community. In her younger days, along with raising her family, she worked diligently on the family farm. She was the friendliest of ladies, warm hearted and obliging.  Margaret loved to mix and socialise with a cup of coffee and she really enjoyed the company that the active age group brought with it. She was a happy lady and you always knew she was nearing as you could hear her singing as she came along.  Margaret was a deeply religious lady and put a lot of store in her deep rooted faith. She will be sadly missed in our community by everyone that had the pleasure to know her.

Margaret’s remains reposed in Farrell’s Funeral Home before her removal to St. Mary’s Church, Ballagh for her Requiem Mass on Saturday. Following Mass she was laid to rest in Cloontuskert cemetery. To her daughter Jeanette, sons Martin and John, grandchildren, great grandchildren, daughters in law Anne Marie and Maureen, relatives and friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Wedding

The marriage took place on Friday 15th July at St. Cecilia’s church, Curraghroe of Frankie Duffy, son of Johnnie and Maura Duffy, Mahoraveen and Niamh Toolan, daughter of Brian and Sally Toolan, Drinagh, Strokestown. Best man was John Duffy, brother of the groom while the Matron of Honour was Fiona Duffy, sister of the bride. The pageboys were J.J. and Liam Duffy nephews of the bride and groom and the flower girl was Aoife Duffy daughter of the happy couple. The marriage was celebrated by Fr. Dan, Kilgefin parish. The wedding reception took place in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon. We wish the happy couple many years of wedded happiness.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Madge and Jim Finn and their family on the death on Friday last 29th July of Madge’s sister Mary Cowan, Raheen, Clara, Co. Offaly.

Irish Times Feature

Turning the page on the Irish Times the other day I was greeted of a photograph of a familiar location and those in the photograph were even more familiar and none other than Mark Kenny, his wife Dee and their three children Leah, Tim and David. The article was in relation to going back to school and the rising cost of the return. Mark and Dee were very sensible in their approach and said that right from the beginning of the summer they would pick up school necessities on a regular basis. It was an excellent interview by Mark and Dee. The interview was conducted by local man Stephen Farrell, Rathcline, who is presently working with the Irish Times.

Wedding

The marriage took place on Wednesday last 27th July at Glasson Lakehouse Hotel of Martina Trimble, daughter of Kathleen and the late Tommy Trimble, Cloonadra and Leon Flower son of Robert and Sheila Flower, Kenagh. Chief bridesmaid was Teresa Trimble sister of the Bride and Bestman was Sean Mulleady best friend of the groom. Pageboy was Ruben Flower son of the happy couple who also gave his mother away. Flower girl was one year old Megan Flower daughter of the happy couple. The civil ceremony was performed outdoors with Lough Ree as the backdrop by Lorraine McCarthy, Co. Louth. The wedding reception took place in Glasson Lakehouse Hotel. We wish the happy couple many years of health and happiness.

Train in the use of a Defibrillator

We all know about and appreciate those that are trained in the use of the defibrillator. You too can avail of the training and become vital cogs in your community for anyone that may be in need of someone with the skills of the defibrillator use.

The local defibrillator group is actively seeking new people in the Kilgefin, Ballyleague, Cashel, Killashee and Rathcline Lanesboro areas to become competent in the use of the Defibrillator. The group are also looking to retrain and refresh those that have already completed the course.

If you are interested, please leave your name and phone number with Martina O’Brien personally in the shop or by phoning 086 3858934 or martinaclyne1@gmail.com

Your contributions urgently required

The importance of defibrillators in the general area cannot be overstated. The lives it can save and has done in recent weeks are well documented. Over the time of the Covid restrictions the opportunity to raise funds for the replacement of batteries and pads as well as funding needed to replace and upgrade defibrillators could not take place.

Now an appeal for essential funding is being made and the group is appealing to your generosity to ensure all the upgrades and replacements can take place.

If you wish to contribute we ask that you donate by leaving money in an envelope marked with your name into Martina O’Brien at the Corner Shop.

Unveiling new signs
