Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

Triathlon Weekend

After what was a few poor weeks’ weather wise Lanesboro Triathlon Club’s Triathlon weekend always signals the start of the summer. Yet again, the poor weather disappeared and the warm and balmy weather welcomed another Triathlon weekend. The community was really buzzing with a large number of people coming to the area for the triathlon and helping to create a special atmosphere. It felt great to be welcoming the Two Provinces back after the Covid restrictions.

On Friday evening over 130 youngsters aged between 12 and 17 took part in what was a very exciting race and it was fascinating to see so many of our local youngsters taking part in the three discipline event of  swim, cycle, run. A great evening was had by all the youngster who also enjoyed the after race entertainment.

Saturday was another wonderful day weather wise for those participating with a lovely warm feel but no extremely hot sun beating down on the athletes. The first to enter the first stage of the event was the Para athletes and the event continued for the next two hours with competitors of all abilities swam, cycled and ran their hearts out to better their previous times. Once again the Lanesboro Tri club put on a spectacular event and this was echoed many times by competitors and spectators alike.

As is usual there were a massive number of locals who volunteered to steward and help out the local club and they did trojan work throughout the weekend.

Well done to all concerned for another fabulous Two Provinces triathlon.

Death

On Wednesday last 6th July we were very saddened to learn of the death at the Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar of Elizabeth Lannon, Ballagh, Kilrooskey. Elizabeth was originally a native of County Galway who married her late husband Jim who predeceased her some years ago. Prior to her retirement, Elizabeth was a nurse who worked at Roscommon Hospital for over 30 years where she was renowned for her caring manner. She was always a lady of great elegance who had a wonderful taste in style. In years gone by herself and Jim would be seen at local dances where they were excellent dancers. First and foremost she was a wonderful mother and wife whose family always came first for her. She was a house proud lady and that could be seen in the way she maintained her beautiful garden all year round. As a neighbour and friend there were few equal and her passing will be greatly missed by everyone that knew her.

Her remains reposed in Farrell’s Funeral Home on Friday last. On Saturday her remains were removed to St. Mary’s Church, Ballagh for her Funeral Mass. Following Mass she was laid to rest alongside her husband in Derrane Cemetery. We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to her son Anthony, daughters Anne and Marena, grandchildren Mark, Kevin, Aisling and Enda and their extended family and a large circle of friends.

Great Pride

On Sunday last the Kerry Dublin All-Ireland semi-final proved to be a thriller with the result coming down to the last kick of the game. The game was referred impeccably by local man Paddy Neilan who had a fantastic game which led to the free flowing encounter that it turned out to be. Paddy’s star continues to rise and there is no doubt that greater days are sure ahead for Paddy.

Found

A sum of money was found on the roadway in the vicinity of Rathcline Cemetery on Sunday 3rd July. If this was your money you should contact Joe Rooney, Rathcline.

Train in the use of a Defibrillator

We all know about and appreciate those that are trained in the use of the defibrillator. You too can avail of the training and become vital cogs in your community for anyone that may be in need of someone with the skills of the defibrillator use.

The local defibrillator group is actively seeking new people in the Kilgefin, Ballyleague, Cashel, Killashee and Rathcline Lanesboro areas to become competent in the use of the Defibrillator. The group are also looking to retrain and refresh those that have already completed the course.

If you are interested please leave your name and phone number with Martina O’Brien personally in the shop or by phoning 086 3858934 or martinaclyne1@gmail.com

Your contributions badly needed

The importance of defibrillators in the general area cannot be overstated. The lives it can save and has done in previous times are well documented. Over the time of the Covid restrictions the opportunity to raise funds for the replacement of batteries and pads as well as funding needed to replace and upgrade defibrillators could not take place.

Now an appeal for essential funding is being made and the group is appealing to your generosity to ensure all the upgrades and replacements can take place.

If you wish to contribute we ask that you donate by leaving money in an envelope marked with your name into Martina O’Brien at the Corner Shop.

Former local Passes Away

It was with great sadness we learned of the recent death of Maura Noonan in London. Maura whose maiden name was Ward from the Green. She was daughter of the very popular and highly regarded Ward family. Maura moved to the Green when her father Jimmy along with his wife Margaret moved into one of the estate houses on the Green with Jimmy working with Bord na Mona. As is the Ward family trait Maura           aw was a warm hearted and pleasant lady whose company was always a pleasure to be in. Maura was predeceased by her brothers Seamus, Michael (Miko), Norbert (Norby) Brendan, Hubert and Noel. She is survived by her brother Martin, sisters, Theresa, Loretta, and Harriette along with her husband Pat, daughter Fiona, son Paul and grandchildren to whom we express our deepest sympathy.

Change in Date

The Blessing of the Graves will take place in Clonbonny Cemetery on Sunday next 17th July in Clonbonny Cemetery and the final Blessing will take place in Lanesboro/St. John’s cemetery on Sunday 24th July all at 6pm.

Out of respect and love to all our family members and friends it is very important that all graves should be tended to prior to the Blessings.

It is also very important that all cemeteries be left in a pristine state and no littering. Please bring away all rubbish.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the Rooney family on the death in Stockport, Manchester of Jimmy Connors. Jimmy was husband to Frances Rooney and was a regular visitor to Lanesboro and Rathcline over many years. A native of Ballyvary, County Mayo Jimmy is survived by his wife Frances, sons Jason, Darren, Joseph and Danny, the Rooney and Connors families in Ireland and England.

Former local Passes Away

On Wednesday 6th July we were very sad to learn of the death at Connolly Hospital, Dublin of JP Bannon. He was formerly of Main Street where he spent his growing up years in Lanesboro. He was son of Pat and Frances Bannon and following his school years he found employment with ESB in Dublin. In recent times he had been in failing health but his passing still saddened the hearts of everyone that knew him. JP had a great love of Lanesboro and its characters and up to recent years he was a regular visitor to the home patch. He was a man that was always fondly remembered by all those that knew him – everyone that has spoken of JP had happy memories of his times with them in Lanesboro.

JP’s remains reposed at Cunningham’s Funeral Home on Friday last and his Requiem Mass took place on Saturday at St. Brigid’s Church Blanchardstown followed by cremation at Glasnevin Crematorium. To his wife Maureen, daughter Fiona, son Conor, brother Joe, sisters Mary and Elizabeth, their families and friends we extend our deepest sympathy.
