Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Monday 20th June 2022

Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

Wonderful Prospects

As all my readers know there is much going on behind the scene in an effort to make Lanesboro and Ballyleague great again.

A lot of the focus is the creation of Lanesboro and Ballyleague as a tourism destination as part of Fáilte Irelands Hidden Heartlands brand created by Fáilte Ireland to link with the very successful branding of the Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland’s Ancient East.

Earlier, I mentioned that under the Lanesboro Tourism Hub Longford County Council were awarded €250,000 for the tender assessment and development of the Surf and Turf project that was recommended by Future Analytics/KPMG in their Enterprise and Economic Development Strategy. This project has really taken the interest of people with so many asking the whereabouts of the proposal at the moment. Allied to this the Amphitheatre proposal for the quarry is also creating a great interest with the locals.

Last week the result of the Boardwalk Feasibility Study commissioned by Roscommon County Council was released by Dublin consulting engineers Roughan & O’Donovan. Author of the study Marcin Mikonowicz presented the results of the study and the different options that are available. Judging for the results there is a wonderful opportunity for the building of the Boardwalk and the creation of Ballyleague and Lanesboro a tourism hub on the Southside of the bridge creating a walkway from the Marina in Ballyleague out along the shoreline and onto a bridge that will span the cut linking to the Longford bank. Along the pathway it is proposed to see some fishing bays installed to increase the fishing spaces in the vicinity. What is now required is the Longford County Council to complete the Boardwalk study on its own side hence the availability to secure the required funding for this very unique project.

The green shoots are beginning to bud and let us hope that these 3 proposals will come to fruition very soon and Lanesboro and Ballyleague can be a major tourism hub very quickly.

Dáil mention

As it happens Lanesboro and Ballyleague got some worthwhile mention in the Dáil last week when both Sinn Fein TD’s Claire Kerrane, (Roscommon Galway) and Sorca Clarke (Longford Westmeath) spoke of the need for Lanesboro and Ballyleague following the departure of  ESB thus creating a job black spot for the general area. They spoke of the work within the community to reinvigorate the area and spoke highly of the opportunity that the Boardwalk would bring to not only Lanesboro/Ballyleague but the wider community with an expectation of the area becoming a major tourist centre.

This was followed with a very positive meeting with the Minister

Success to Success

As I have often mentioned in these notes of the continued successes of Alan Flanagan it gives me great pleasure to announce yet another accolade that came Alan’s way last week. As you know, Alan is a playwright, as well as a script writer for the TV serial Hollyoaks and last week at the British Soap Awards Alan’s writing once again came to the fore when the programme received the award of ‘best scene of the year’ much to the delight of Alan, the Channel 4 company and the Hollyoaks product team. Alan is son of Jimmy and Bernie Flanagan, Rathcline and brother of Shane, Cloonadra.

Defibrillator Group Training

An AED is an Automated External Defibrillator. It is a portable, simple to use, computerised device. When someone suffers a sudden cardiac arrest it delivers a shock to the heart to allow it to resume its normal rhythm.

An AED checks the heart’s rhythm and it automatically recognises if there is a life threatening rhythm. Once detected the AED delivers a shock to stun the heart returning it to its normal rhythm.

The local defibrillator group is actively seeking new people in the Kilgefin, Ballyleague, Cashel, Killashee and Rathcline Lanesboro areas to become competent in the use of the Defibrillator. The group are also looking to retrain and refresh those that have already completed the course.

If you are interested please leave your name and phone number with Martina O’Brien personally in the shop or by phoning 086 3858934 or martinaclyne1@gmail.com

Former resident passes away

It was with the greatest of sadness that we learned of the death in England of Noel O’Sullivan, Hounslow, London on Monday 16th May. Noel, a son of the town and Knock, was a very regular visitor back to his native sod. He was a man that never lost touch with the friends he grew up with and the generations that came behind. His warmth and heartfelt greetings will be sadly missed. May he rest in peace.

Noel was predeceased by his father John, mother Mary, his wife Rose, sisters Margaret and Maureen, brothers Sonny, Liam and Hilary.

To his son Gerard, daughter Anita, granddaughter Carla, grandsons Finn and Sam, sister Rosaleen Egan, brothers Vincent, Michael and Val we extend our deepest sympathy.

Please support

The importance of defibrillators in the general area cannot be overstated. The lives it can save and has done in previous times are well documented. Over the time of the Covid restrictions the opportunity to raise funds for the replacement of batteries and pads as well as funding needed to replace and upgrade defibrillators could not take place.

Now an appeal for essential funding is being made and the group is appealing to your generosity to ensure all the upgrades and replacements can take place.

If you wish to contribute we ask that you donate by leaving money in an envelope marked with your name into Martina O’Brien at the Corner Shop.

Cemetery Sunday

We welcome back Cemetery Sundays to the parish and as usual the first blessing of those buried in Rathcline Cemetery will take place on Sunday 3rd July at 6pm. On Sunday 10th July the blessing of those buried will be in Lanesboro Cemetery at 6pm. The third and final blessing will take place in Clonbonny Cemetery on Sunday 17th July in Clonbonny Cemetery.
