Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

Restrictions Lifting

Last Saturday seen the beginning of the easing of the Covid restrictions that has caused so many disruptions for almost two years. The lifting of the restrictions has allowed us all to exhale with relief. The younger generations can now actively congregate and mingle with each other at social gatherings. Numbers can now return to attending church services that will bring a great respite to the many that were missing attending services – mask wearing is still insisted upon. Attendance for all sports events will be greeted with huge excitement seeing that numbers cannot attend once again. A word of caution to those wishing to attend sporting events that you have to pay into is that practically all associations now require tickets to be bought online. There will be nobody to take money at the entrances as was the way previously so if you are going to the All-Ireland semi-finals or National Leagues games or other events you must prepay online.

We must all remember to continue to do the right thing in keeping ourselves safe and free of Covid where possible and keep in mind that it has not completely gone from our community.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Bernie and Carmel Mc Kenna, Barnacor, and his sister Anne in England on the death of their brother Peter, Lakepoint, Mullingar at Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar, on Thursday last 20th January. For those that remembered Peter growing up in the townsland of Tullyvrane will remember a great character, an all-round sportsman and a lad with a great heart. Peter spent many years in the Irish Army and served with great distinction until his retirement. He rose through the ranks and was highly respected by everyone that worked above and below his rank. He was noted for his thoroughness in preparation and carrying out his tasks diligently and with great fairness.

We further extend our sympathy to his wife Mary, his children Peter, Darren, Damien, Samantha, Justin, Lee relatives and friends.

All-Ireland Semi-Final

Saturday next the St. Faithleach’s team travel to The Downs GAA grounds outside Mullingar for their All-Ireland semi-final against Meath and Leinster champions Trim.

Confidence is sky high amongst the panel and management going into the game. The team continues to develop and thrive on its success.

Saturday takes the team just one hour away from a place in the All-Ireland final. Betting sites have St. Faithleach’s as outsiders on Saturday, a position that the lads thrive on. There is no doubt but the game on Saturday with be a tremendous battle and we know that no stone will be left unturned in the quest for victory.

The game will have a 1.30pm throw in and with the restriction on numbers attending it is very important that everyone that can go travel to the game. Tickets must be booked online at the link below https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.universe.com%2Fevents%2Fall-ireland-intermediate-football-semi-final-st-faithleachs-v-trim-tickets-L9Y21P&data=04%7C01%7C%7C050e05ff3d9647859f7e08d9dea3578e%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637785615394665285%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=7%2Fx6%2Flcxp4wvxaJFREagf%2BnaDqeoyyWdqyiDUB5Mfow%3D&reserved=0

Sympathy

The entire community was stunned and shocked when the news broke on Friday 7th January of the tragic death, following a road accident, of David Gillooly, Roscommon. David was a native of Mount Cashel and son of John and Carmel Gillooly. He was a qualified teacher who was working in the Department of Education in Athlone. No job or task was too much for David, he was a man ever obliging. He was willing to help at the drop of a hat. He had a heart of gold and was an exemplary man who gave a good part of his life to the people of Kenya and Malawi. He was a real people’s person and lived life to it fullest and his sudden passing has robbed us of a great man who still had so much to offer.

His remains reposed in Farrell’s Funeral Home on Tuesday 11th and his remains were removed to the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon for his Funeral Mass. Burial took place afterwards in Cloontuskert cemetery. To his daughter Méabh, his father John, his mother Carmel, brothers Paul and Tommy, sister, Monica, relatives and a worldwide friend base we extend our deepest sympathy.

Ballyboro FC

It was a hectic weekend for the club with 7 teams in action. While the results weren’t brilliant there were some notable individual personal and team performances.

The under 9s had two teams in action in their blitz with Stonepark. Both teams played with great teamwork and skill and scored lots of goals. Team 1: Senan McHale, Sean Hogan, Ben Cassidy, Jay Hanly, Katie Sorohan, David Kopic, Joe Greally, Laoise Farrell. Team 2: Tadhg Shea, Adam Kruk, Ben Lackey, Caden Donlon, Tom Skelly, Hugh Creedon, Jay Flynn.

The under 12s gave a good account of themselves in their encounter with table toppers Mostrim United, going down by a 3-2 margin. Both Ballyboro goals were scored by Oisin Dillon. Team: Stephen Farrell, Darragh Donlon, Cathal Hanly, Jack Cassidy, Tim Kenny, Shane Farrell, Alfie Murphy, Oisin Dillon, Charlie Moynihan. Subs: Alfie Brehon, Hayden Smyth, Josh Curran, Kyle Rice.

The under 14s never quite got to grips with a good Gaels United team who were deserving winners though the 5-2 winning margin flattered the Drumlish boys. Ballyboro: Mikie Sorohan, John Farrell, Leon Malkowski, Aidan Kelly (1), Ciaran McGloin, Cody Phelan, Noah McLoughlin, Billy Murray, Rian Shanley, Eoin Connell, Rian Hogan. Subs: Lucas Moynihan (1), Adam Farrell, Ashdon Bennett, Ethan Slattery, James Cullen, Eoin O’Brien.

The under 16s were left to rue missing a glut of gilt edged first half scoring opportunities when a late second half goal gave Ballymahon the spoils. Ballyboro: Aidan Kelly, Anthony Cox, Cormac O’Dowd, Jack Casey, Brendan Mulvihill, Euan Cullen, Wesley Hughes, Gabriel Klava, Sam Murphy, Ben Murphy, Eoin Cox, Subs: Kevin Donlon, Luke Cullen, James Mimnagh, Paulius Buliosa, Christian Hannon, Nathan McCloat.

The under 11s were involved in a 12 goal thriller in their game with Streete. Though the Ballyboro team played very well unfortunately for them seven of the twelve goals scored were for the Streete boys.

The under 12 girls were in action away to Newtown Warriors. All members of the squad played really well but unfortunately the result did not go their way. Panel: Clodagh Martin, Leah Mimnagh, Lillie Dowd, Saoirse Feeney, Saoirse Dillon, Hannah Farrell, Sophie Cox, Faye Hogan, Rosie Farrell, Ellen Cox, Chloe Kilcoyne, Millie Cassidy, Zoe Hassett, Katie Smith, Ava Donohue, Alyssa Birmingham, Sadhbh Neilon

The under 14 girls played an exciting encounter against Ballymahon that ended fittingly in a draw 1-1. Kate Malone scored a cracking goal for Ballyboro. Panel: Emma Feeney, Amy Burke, Marianna Donlon, Anna Cox, Kate Ferguson, Sophie Byrnes, Kate Malone, Leah Kenny, Emma Dowd, Maria Forde, Sarah Healy, Phoebie Ryan, Emily Ryan.

In the Combined Counties League a much under strength Ballyboro team performed creditably for much of the game and it was only in the last quarter that Colmcille Celtic forged ahead to win 4-1. Team: Mark Tarmey, Henry Masterson, Greg Cassidy, Sean Casey, Derek Murray, Paddy Kenny, Alan Kenny, Luke Lisle, Ben Hussey, Jordan Donlon (1), Dylan Donlon.
