Stories About Lanesboro in New Book

The recently published, Longford’s Republican Story 1900 -2000, contains a wealth of stories about Rathcline and Lanesboro that many people will not have been aware of. One of the most fascinating items is a list of 72 men from the parish who were in the IRA during the War of Independence and 29 women who were in Cumann na mBan. The book describes the Turlough Ambush, on 17 May 1921, the most successful operation carried out by the IRA in South Longford. In the Civil War, Lanesboro Barracks was attacked on no less than six occasions, and the men who took part are listed. In April 1922, a Civic Guard was shot dead in bizarre circumstances during a raid on the Northern Bank in Lanesboro. The cause of death of a Black and Tan in a tailor’s shop in the town in April 1923 is a matter of debate. Was it an accident or an IRA ambush? Events in Lanesboro from the time Patrick Belton took part in the 1916 Rising, until the unveiling of a monument in the town in 2005 in memory of H-Blocks hunger striker, Martin Hurson, are extensively covered. This fascinating book with 600 pages and 500 photographs can be purchased in O’Brien’s

Tidy Towns Results

Once again, the work of our three Tidy Towns committees was duly rewarded when the results of this years 2021 Supervalu National Tidy Towns awards were announced. The town of Ennis came out as national winners with a total of 355 marks which was 9 higher than the previous winners Glaslough. The rising of the marks is an indication of how hard it is to get into top tier and how hard and inventive you must be to be with a chance to win.

Once again, Cloontuskert is our front runner and their score of 341 marks is beginning to get very close to the major award winning. The Cloontuskert must be very proud of their marks which were 10 up on the 2019 results. Cloontuskert also the recipients of the bronze medal award and won a monetary prize of €400 and a commended county prize of €500.

Lanesboro came next with 320 marks which was and increase of 13 marks from the previous competition in 2019. It is great to see another increase in the marks highlighting the consistent work being done by the committee. No further awards but they must be very happy with the big increase in marks.

Ballyleague is neck and neck with Lanesboro and one point behind at 319 which is an increase of 7 marks from the 2019 competition. However, Ballyleague was also highly commended in the Waters and Communities section with a monetary award of €500. Again, there must be great jubilation within Ballyleague for the excellent results.

Progression and creativity is prevalent within these three groups and their wonderful work must be applauded. They consistently get better year on year; we encourage everyone in our communities to be as supportive and helpful to the three groups as they strive for greater marks. Their tremendous work does not go unnoticed with a huge amount of positive comment on a very regular basis. We have a lot to be thankful and grateful to our three Tidy Towns committees for their tireless work. Well done on your awards.

Local Voice on Radio

A few moths ago we lost Ciaran Mullooly off our TV screens and radio. We wondered how long it would be before we would hear another local voice on the airwaves. The answer was not too long as over the past number of months the voice of Gavin Cooney is becoming more and more familiar to us all. He is a regular sports commentator on many radio programmes and his wide and varied knowledge of all sports is a joy to behold.

Gavin a son of Albert and Carolyn Cooney, Lehery is a writer with the very popular sports site the42.ie and a presenter of a number of excellent sports podcasts. Congratulations Gavin and may your reputation continue to grow.

Thank you

Your generosity is truly astonishing. Incredibly, your contributions of toiletries, clothes and money contributions continues to stream in for the Grafton Street Kitchens. No words can really describe your continued generosity. Rather than slowing down your contributions are continuously arriving in with money contributions, clothing, gloves, scarves, white socks and toiletries.

Shoe Box Appeal

Your response to the Shoe Box appeal was fabulous. With locals and those travelling from further afield to leave in their Shoe Boxes shows what a phenomenal people you are and there are absolutely no words that can convey my gratitude to each and every one of you that have been so wonderfully generous. Brendan and Eilish have arranged the pickup of the shoe boxes and they will distribute them to those youngsters and their parents that thought

Defibrillator Training

Time and time again there are urgent call outs a great need to know how to work the defibrillator. There are now a big number of defibrillators in the area there is a greater need than ever for more people to learn how to use the defibrillator or to do their refresher course. It is essential that all clubs and associations in the community have people trained up.

In the next few weeks there will be a new course beginning and if you want to be included in the course or refresher course you are asked to leave your name and phone number with Martina O’Brien in the shop or ring Martina at 086 3858934.

With over three decades working in the environment of the media Seamus Duke has many a story to tell. From his times with Shannonside covering the political and sporting life of the region to his now present role with Ros FM and the Roscommon People many a story has come to his attention. Seamus was one never to have just one pot boiling and his time as presenter of a music show as well as a DJ in Roscommon has led him through a varied life and many stories.

He has put a good number of the stories into print with his new book ‘Dukie, The Game of Life’ that has been just published. It is one of those must books and it is available for locals in O’Brien’s at the price of €15.

Ballyboro FC

Two stunning goals by Rian Hogan was the decisive factor in the under 14s win over Stonepark. His first goal followed a mesmerising run that left the Stonepark defence floundering. The second was an exquisite chip from outside the box. Cody Phelan got a well taken third goal to secure a 3-1 win.

The under 13s were very impressive when they accounted for Mostrim 4-1. Eoin Beattie, Rian Hogan, Evan Rooney, and Emry Kaya were the scoring the goals

The under 12s were also in fine fettle when they got the better of Ballymahon by a 3-0 margin. Goal scorers were Alfie Brehon, Charlie Moynihan and Tim Kenny.

In the Connacht under 16 Shield Ballyboro went down 6-1 to Yeats United. Fielding a largely under15 team they found their cause was not helped by a number of questionable decisions. Wesley Hughes scored the Ballyboro goal.

The under 8s were involved in two very entertaining games with Inny Rovers. The girls teams met with contrasting fortunes at the weekend. The under 12s gave a convincing display in their encounter with Kenagh United. Goals from Sophie Cox, Saoirse Feeney and an o.g. secured the spoils for Ballyboro. Kenagh reversed the result at under 14 level with a comprehensive win.
