Try-a-Dive
The value of having the Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club in our community cannot ever be underestimated. Their work is fabulous and their commitment is immense.
The club is always looking to attract new divers and presently are hosting a ‘Try a Dive’ in Longford Pool on Thursday nights at 9pm.

This is a wonderful opportunity to try diving with the Lough Ree Sub Aqua club.
Wedding
The marriage took place in St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro on Saturday 24th October of Leonie Mahon, daughter of Michael and Caroline Mahon, Bornacor and Niall McNally son of Terry and Renee McNally, Seabank, Castlebellingham, Co. Louth. Chief bridesmaid was Kyrie Mahon, sister of the bride and the bridesmaids were Rebecca Kelly and Miranda Russell both friends of the bride. The bestman was Paul Kiernan a friend of the groom and the groomsmen were Eugene McArdle and Padraig Morrissey both friends of the groom.
The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Declan Shannon. The wedding reception took place in Clonabreany House, Co. Meath
We would like to wish the happy couple many years of wedded bliss.
Death
Not only in our community but throughout Ireland the death announcement on Saturday 23rd October at his residence of Gerry Thompson, Culliaghy, Ballyleague brought disbelief and sadness in copious amounts. There is no doubt Gerry Thompson was truly one of natures gentlemen, quietly spoken and personable. His demeanour ensured that anyone that got to know or just be in his company for any length of time were greatly affected by his warm nature, the genuine sincere feeling emanating from the man. He had that uncanny ability to converse on just about any subject matter and was equally a great listener. Gerry was meticulous in everything he did whether it was with his telecommunications job with Eir, the Credit Union or in his time as a player, involved in team management or as a club official with St. Faithleach’s, nothing was left to chance. He rose through the ranks of the Credit Union until he reached the pinnacle in 2019 when he was elected as President of the Irish League of Credit Unions. For a man reaching the top of such a high-profile job there was a great humility about Gerry. He left an indelible mark on this community and wider afield and that was clearly evident by the amount of comment by everyone in the days following his death where the one word got used all of the time ‘gentleman’. Gerry fought ill health in recent times and as was the mark of the man he fought it with great faith, courage and strength. The passing of Gerry Thompson will leave a great desolation in the hearts and minds of everyone that knew him and none more than his wife Martha and his family who meticulously and lovingly cared for him at home during illness.
Gerry’s remains reposed at his home on Monday before being removed to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague on Tuesday for Mass of the Resurrection. Burial took place afterwards to Cloontuskert Cemetery. To his wife Martha, daughters Caoilfhionn, Cliodhna, Gráinne and son Cormac, sisters Mary and Bernie, brother Seamus, grandson Michael, son-in-law Micheál, relatives and a multitude of friends we extend our deepest sympathy.
Wedding
The marriage took place at the Hodson Bay Hotel Athlone on Friday 22nd October of Peter Reynolds, son of Ita and the late Brendan Reynolds, Cloontuskert and Catie McLoughlin daughter of Jim and Phil McLoughlin, Oran, Co. Roscommon. The chief bridesmaid was Mairead McLoughlin, sister of the bride and the bridesmaids were Jacqui Corcoran, sister of the bride, Nainsi Corcoran cousin of the bride, Elma Healy and Rebecca Kelly both friends of the bride. Bestman was Thomas Reynolds, brother of the groom and groomsmen were Greg Cassidy, Scott Cassidy and Kieran Kilkenny all friends of the groom. The Flower Girl was Cara Corcoran niece of the bride. The wedding ceremony was performed by Teresa Lally and the wedding reception was held in the Hodson Bay Hotel.
We wish the happy couple many years of wedded happiness.
Called Off
The Rathcline Ladies county semi-final due to be played on Sunday last in Clonbonny was called off due to an outbreak of Corona Virus. The game will be rescheduled for a couple of weeks’ time.
Robbery
Following the spate of break-ins two weeks ago it is concerning that I am once again writing about another break-in in our community. This time the break-in was in the Moneen area on Friday evening. This is beginning to become too regular in our community and I cannot stress enough the need to increase the protection around our properties. There most definitely a greater need for Garda checkpoints particularly in evening to create a greater sense of confidence and to see who is travelling our roads especially as we go into winter and the darker evenings.

Your donations to the Grafton Street continued arrive in big numbers again this week.
Brendan O’Halloran, our local man, continues to give of his time during the week evenings in Dublin is amazed that what started out as a three-week appeal should be still going and continue to grow. This past week many and varied donations of winter wear such as scarfs, gloves, toiletries and mainly clothes were received.
The collection point for your donations is and will stay open in O’Brien’s
The main appeal continues to be for white socks and wipes along with toiletries – shower gel, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, men’s large underwear and water wipes to include in their parcels.
If you have clothes that you no longer wear and you would like to donate them, they will be greatly appreciated. The clothes must be fit for immediate wearing and clothes you would wear yourself.
For children this year we are organising a shoe box appeal. See the note below.
Shoe Box Appeal
Every year we pack shoe boxes full of items for kids in foreign countries for Christmas, which we are in no way against. I know there are kids suffering from poverty all over the world. This year in Ireland we are going to have more kids homeless than ever before. Brendan saw it first-hand last year in the many hostels he visited.
We have decided to plead with all of you to donate a gift box/Christmas bag for kids, boys and girls in age groups. See the listed items and age groups for ease of use at the end of these notes on www.joeobrien.ie. Eilish Dillon has continued to work very hard to get us into numerous schools in Co. Longford and her efforts have been very well rewarded. Joe and Martina O’Brien are on board, as a drop off point for anyone who wishes to donate the Christmas boxes into their shop. Brendan is appealing to people who do not have school going kids to donate what you can in a Christmas box, with age of child and boy/girl marked on it. We will be personally distributing these gifts to the hostels just before Christmas, so you know exactly where your donations are going. Go raibh maith agat.
If you need some empty shoe boxes, there are a large number available in O’Brien’s. Feel free to call in and collect empty boxes.
Defibrillator Training
Time and time again there are urgent call outs a great need to know how to work the defibrillator. There are now a big number of defibrillators in the area there is a greater need than ever for more people to learn how to use the defibrillator or to do their refresher course. It is essential that all clubs and associations in the community have people trained up.
In the next few weeks there will be a new course beginning and if you want to be included in the course or refresher course you are asked to leave your name and phone number with Martina O’Brien in the shop or ring Martina at 086 3858934.

Sleeping out for Simon
Local man Junior Hannon will this year be taking up the annual challenge of ‘Sleeping out for Simon’ at Longford Rugby Club on Friday night 10th December. Sponsorship cards supporting Junior in the challenge are in most premises in town and we would encourage your full support.

Boat trips
The Access for All boat is making trips three times a day Monday to Sunday – 10am, 12 noon and 2.30pm. It has become the success that it deserves to be with nothing but excellent comments from all those that have so far availed of the boat trip. The trips cater for both able bodied and those with disabilities. Bookings continue to be very high and early booking is advisable to ensure travelling at your chosen time and day.
This is an absolutely brilliant trip with a knowledgeable on-board staff that will make the 1½ hour trip feel like a very short time.

Tidy Towns Lottery
The weekly Lanesboro Tidy Towns lottery draw took place in the Tourism Office on Tuesday morning 26th October for a jackpot of €5,400.
The numbers drawn for this week were 3, 9, 10 and 23. There was no winner of the jackpot and the jackpot for Tuesday 2nd November rose to €5,500.
The winner of the €50 consolation draw was won by John Rice Cloontuskert, and the three €20 prizes winners were Zach, Emma and Zara, grandchildren of €50 winner John Rice, Francis Clyne and Sarah Hopkins c/o Mags
Rathcline 50/50
The Rathcline club’s 50/50 draw took place on Tuesday night 12th October in the Yacht Bar. The lucky winning envelope drawn was in the name of ‘Alfie the dog’ c/o John Delaney, Fermoyle who won €160. The club would like to thank everyone for their generous support.

Ballyboro
The under 14s were involved in an eight-goal thriller with Gaels United that ended fittingly in a draw as neither team deserved to lose. Ballyboro led 2-1 at half time with goals from Eoin Connell and Rian Shanley, but three goals for the Drumlish boys early in the second period put them 4-2 ahead. Leon Malkowski came to Ballyboro’s rescue with two well taken goals to secure the draw. The under 13s displayed good form when they got the better of Abbey Rovers by four goals to two. Oisin Dillon helped himself to a hat trick and the other goal was a real stunner scored by Harry Brogan. The under 10s had a very entertaining tussle with Melview where much good football was displayed by both teams. Ballyboro emerged on top by a 6-3 margin. The under 12s went down 3-1 to Mostrim. The difficult underfoot conditions militated against good football and Mostrim emerged as worthy winners. Darragh Donlon scored the Ballyboro goal. In the combined Counties League encounter with Ballymahon a draw was a fair result as both teams had periods of dominance. Ballymahon scored early on, but the impressive Daniel Foley secured a deserved draw for Ballyboro with a towering header. The under 9s played their first Blitz of the season when Inny Rovers provided the opposition at Streete. Ballyboro fielded two teams as follows: Team 1 Katie Sorohan, Laoise Farrell, Tadhg Shea, Ben Cassidy, Hughie Creedon, Sean Hogan. Team 2 Ben Lackey, Caden Donlon, Charlie Hickey, Finn Fallon, Shay Molloy.
This concluded a hectic weekend for the club in which a total of 89 players were involved in seven different games.

Mass attendances
The numbers that can attend Mass in St. Mary’s Church is now set at 120. Feel free to return to a mass of your choice.
Weekend Masses
On Saturday evening next Mass at 7.30pm those from Fermoyle, Green Gardens, Gurteengar, Killinure and Knock Manor.
At 9.30am Mass on Sunday it will be turn of Knock, Lehery and Lismacmanus.
The 11.30am Mass will see parishioners from Lisduff, Lisnacusha, Lisrevagh, Mahoraveen, Main Street and Mount Davis.
November Lists for the Dead
Sheets for listing the dead are available in the Church porch
Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesdays in the church from 10.30 to 8pm. It is very important that there will be at least two people in the church for each hour of the Adoration.
Mass intentions will continue to be booked for weekdays for the present. People wishing to book masses can do so by contacting Fr Sergiy before or after mass during the week in the Sacristy. All that have booked masses are asked to rebook them for weekdays for the foreseeable future.
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament has resumed on Friday evenings, starting this Friday evening and it will take place between 6pm and 6.45pm. Exposition will be followed Mass at 7pm. It is also an opportunity to avail of the opportunity for Confession.

A new event at Knights and Conquests Centre in Granard, on the weekend of the 27th and 28th November.
Everything will take place indoor. There will be a seasonal selection of local artisan creations.
