Donations keep rolling in

It is truly astonishing that the donations to the Grafton Street Kitchen appeal is continuing in such a remarkable way. As a result of your generosity and the promise of more to come the box will remain in O’Brien’s for the foreseeable future.

The magnitude of donations in support of Brendan O’Halloran’s work is truly astounding and has rocked him back on his heels. The selfless work he does with the homeless is incredible. Brendan has his own daily work to contend with in Dublin, but he still finds time to share his spare time with the needy working with the Grafton Street Kitchens.

This week the main appeal is as it was last week for white socks and wipes along with toiletries – shower gel, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, men’s large underwear and water wipes to include in their parcels.

Last week saw the beginning of the Autumn weather with the nights getting chilly. At the Kitchen in Grafton Street over 300 were fed and given parcels while other volunteers were going around the city to areas where people are known to be living rough. This is where your donations are going to and you should be rightly proud of your generosity knowing it is going to make someone’s life a little better.

There is a drop off box in O’Brien’s shop. You are thanked for your tremendous generosity, and you are encouraged to keep donating for those people whose daily life for themselves and their families is a living hell. Some people have enquired as to whether they can donate money. If you so wish, please put money into an envelope with your name and address on it so that you can be receipted.

Defibrillator Training

With a new defibrillator there is a great need for new people to get trained in the use of the defibrillator and to have people do their refresher courses. Knowledge in use of the defibrillator is extremely essential as we have seen locally in the recent past.

There will be a new course beginning in the near future and if you want to be included in the new course or refresher course you are invited to leave your name and phone number with Martina O’Brien in the shop or ring Martina at 086 3858934.

Support Rathcline Cemetery

The Rathcline Cemetery group are very grateful to everyone that has contributed to the annual collection for the maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery. There is a great deal of work done in the graveyard all year and your contributions make it possible to get this work done. You are asked to place your contribution into an envelope and leave it into Joe or Martina at the corner shop.

Distillery Yard Charity Collection

The recent Longford Live & Local gigs at Distillery Yard brought a great buzz to the town every Saturday evening during the summer. There were some terrific bands creating a great atmosphere, and for the most part the weather was kind.

Well done to Longford County Council for this initiative – Longford was the only county in the entire country who had anything of this kind, and special thanks to Shane Crossan of Republic of Culture who was tasked with organising 50 gigs county wide in the space of 8 weeks.

As the gigs were free, one of the ways people were invited to show their appreciation was in contributing to local charities. At Distillery Yard the chosen charities were Lanesborough Tourism Co-op and Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club, two very worthwhile local organisations who do a tremendous amount of unseen work, and who have both suffered from a fundraising perspective due to the pandemic.

At the Distillery Yard gigs, a total of €300 for each organisation was collected, and cheques were presented by Peter Clancy, CEO of Lough Ree Distillery presented cheques to Dessie McDermott (Lanesborough Tourism Co-Op) and Tracey Gray (Lough Ree Sub-Aqua Club). Suffice to say both organisations were delighted with the outcome and wish to express their gratitude to all those who contributed.

We sincerely hope the council run a similar initiative next year, as it brought visitors from far and wide to our beautiful town.

Distillery Yard Opening Hours

As the summer season is slowly disappearing and the evenings start to close in, the reduced footfall of visitors to Lanesborough is obvious. Distillery Yard have informed us that they will revert to an autumn/ winter opening schedule of Saturday and Sundays only, 10 am – 6 pm.

Ballyboro

The under 12 team had an impressive win over Ballymahon. Oisin Dillon’s goal in a closely contested first half divided the sides, but the team really turned on the style in the second half, and nine further goals saw them emerge as 10-3 winners. Team and scorers: Stephen Farrell, Alfie Brehon, Darragh Donlon, Ferat Pulcu, Kyle Rice, Oisin Dillon (4), Tim Kenny (3), Jack Cassidy, Charlie Moynihan (1). Subs: Hayden Smyth (1), Shane Farrell (1), Elliott Johnson, Aleysha Kaya, Miko Wolwiec, Charlie Boardman.

Longford Cruisers were the opposition in the Combined Counties League. Ballyboro squandered a number of chances in a scoreless first half and were left to rue those misses as the Longford town team found the net five times in the second period to run out comfortable winners. Ballyboro: Mark Tarmey, Ben Hussey, Greg Cassidy, Dylan Donlon, Ryan Fallon, Ryan Guinan, Daniel Lulham, Daniel Foley, Luke Lisle, Dario Cambre, Alan Kenny. Sub: Odhran Wyse.
