Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

National Community Games Finals

Well done to Oisín Dillon, son of Denis and Eilish Dillon, Fermoyle and Faye Hogan, daughter of Sinead and Barry Hogan, Mahoraveen who on Saturday last qualified for the Community Games National Finals. This is fantastic achievement for both Oisín and Faye as well as the Lanesboro Community Game and the Lough Ree Athletic Club.

Grafton Street Kitchens

Local Curraghroe man Brendan O’Halloran is a volunteer with Grafton Street Kitchens which is the Homeless Street Café in Dublin that looks after families and homeless people that are finding it impossible to live in the city without the support of the Grafton Street Kitchens.

On Friday night last, it was so busy that the queue formed around the block and with schools returning there is greater pressure on parents to provide suitable items for day to day living.

As we are not close to the city to supply fresh food items Brendan is asking all local people to contribute toiletries such as shower gel, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo and water wipes to include in the parcels.

These are items that are needed urgently week in week out. There is a box in O’Brien’s shop. We encourage you to be generous for those people that their daily life for themselves and their families is a living hell.

The box will be in O’Brien’s until Sunday week 26th September and longer if donations continue to come in.

Defibrillator Training

With a new defibrillator there is a great need for new people to get trained in the use of the defibrillator and to have people do their refresher courses. Knowledge in use of the defibrillator is extremely essential as we have seen locally in the recent past.

There will be a new course beginning in the near future and if you want to be included in the new course or refresher course you are invited to leave your name and phone number with Martina O’Brien in the shop or ring Martina at 086 3858934.

Representing Ireland

Christian Donlon has been selected on the Irish under 15 squad of 18 players who travel to Montenegro on Saturday next. They play the host country in 2 international games on Tuesday and Thursday week.

Christian hails from Cloontuskert and has long been regarded as an outstanding prospect. Christian played with Ballyboro FC at all age levels from under 6 to under 15. He moved to the Mayo League of Ireland under 14 team last year. He has great athletic ability winning a gold medal for Roscommon in the under 12 100 metres in 2019, at the Community Games National Finals in Limerick. He previously won bronze at 200 metres in 2017. His outstanding football ability allied to his athleticism makes him an exciting prospect for the future.

The fact that Christian has been selected on the national under 15 squad at 13 years of age is testament to his ability. It will be a proud moment for Christian, his family, and Ballyboro FC when Christian dons the green jersey of Ireland. He will be the first player who has played for the club to be capped for Ireland.

Christian is a student at Lanesboro Community College. He is an exceptional athlete in many disciplines and plays Gaelic football with St Faithleach’s and is a member of Lough Ree Athletic Club.

We wish Christian success in those two internationals, and we are sure that he will be wearing that green jersey for many years to come at all levels to senior.

Draw for Two All-Ireland tickets

The All-Ireland ticket raffle for two Premium Level tickets organised by the Rathcline club was won by Dominic Richardson, England who bought his ticket via PayPal from Joe O’Brien.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Stephen and Ann McGloin and family, Cloontuskert on the death of Stephen’s sister Elaine McGloin, Glenade, Leitrim on Wednesday last 8th September.

Birth

Many congratulations to Deanna Flanagan and Dean O’Rourke, Cnoc na Gaoithe on the birth last week of a baby girl

Support Rathcline Cemetery

Covid restrictions ensured that there would be no Cemetery Sunday Mass and remembrance for those family members deceased and buried in Rathcline cemetery. As a result, there was no opportunity for the annual collection for the maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery. There is and has been great commendation for the manner in which cemetery is kept all year around. If you wish to contribute towards the cemetery maintenance, you can do so by placing your contribution into an envelope and leave it into Joe or Martina at the corner shop.

Birth

Many congratulations to Leanne McDermott and Ray Donlon, Knock Manor, on the birth recently of a baby girl.

Golden Anniversaries

Many congratulations to Dessie and Brid McDermott, Barnacor, and Tom and Margaret Nohilly, Rathcline who celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversaries recently and to Ray and Betty Hogan, Carraroe on their impending Golden Wedding Anniversary.

Lough Ree Golfing Society

The monthly Lough Ree Golfing Society outing will take place on this coming Friday 17th September to Tullamore Golf club. All recent local players at Tullamore GC have been high in their praise of the condition of the course. It will be another great challenge for all the Society members. If you are a golfer and would like to join the Society, please come along and enjoy the company of the current members. The tee is booked from 12.10pm.

Boat trips booking

With a great weather forecast for the coming week there is no doubt that the Access for All boat will again be one of the most popular boat trips on the Shannon. The Access for All boat is making trips three times a day Monday to Sunday – 10am, 12 noon and 2.30pm. It has become the success that it deserves to be with nothing but excellent comments from all those that have so far availed of the boat trip. The trips cater for both able bodied and those with disabilities. Bookings continue to be very high and early booking is advisable to ensure travelling at your chosen time and day.

This is an absolutely brilliant trip with a knowledgeable on-board staff that will make the 1½ hour trip feel like a very short time.

To book a seat call Lisa or Dylan at 043 33 21734 or go online today and book at www.loughreeboattrips.com

Presently the fundraising drive for the concert target of €5000 is nearing its target. To date there is almost €4,000 raised and with your support the target can be topped in the coming week or two.

Ballyboro FC

Player Registration for the coming season takes place on this Saturday 18th between 4pm and 5.30pm at Lanesboro Community College. The club caters for players at all age levels from under 6 to under 17. New and existing players are very welcome to register. Players can avail of the state-of-the-art Astro pitch as well as the newly opened grass pitch.

The club AGM will follow registration at 5.30pm.

Next Sunday will be a momentous day for Christian Donlon as he departs Dublin Airport for Montenegro as part of the Irish international under 15 squad. It is a fantastic achievement for Christian to make the Irish under 15 squad at 13 years of age, and a very proud day for his family: his parents Carol and Marcelo, brother Eoin, and sisters Emma, Jade, and Mariana. Christian started his football career at Ballyboro and played for the club at all age levels from under 6 to under 15. The Irish under 15 team play two international games against Montenegro on Tuesday and Thursday week. The club is very proud of Christian and looks forward to seeing him do his country proud next week.

The first game on the brand-new grass pitch took place on Sunday last when the under 12 team played Stonepark. The honour of scoring the first goal on the pitch went to Oisin Dillon. The Ballyboro boys were in fine fettle on the pristine surface and their dominance is reflected in a 7-1 scoreline. Team and scorers: Stephen Farrell, Darragh Donlon, Hayden Smyth, Alesha Kaya, Tim Kenny (2), Alfie Murphy (1), Jack Cassidy (1), Josh Curran (1), Oisin Dillon (2), Subs: Elliott Johnson, Miko Wolowiec, Ferat Pulcu.

The under 12s participated in the Melview Invitational Tournament and once again acquitted themselves very well. In their first game they defeated Carrick Town 1-0, goal scorer Shane Farrell. A brace of goals each from Alfie Murphy and Darragh Donlon saw them get the better of Melview Tigers 4-0. A 0-0 draw with Melview Lions was followed by another draw, 1-1 with Stonepark. Their final group game saw them defeat old rivals Newtown 2-1 with Charlie Moynihan and Darragh Donlon finding the net for Ballyboro. These results saw them qualify for the Major Final where they played Carrick Town again. This time the Carrick on Shannon lads emerged on top on a 2-0 scoreline.

The under 14s started well in their first game of the season away to Granard and took the lead with an Eoin Connell goal but that was as good as it was for the Ballyboro boys, as Granard gradually assumed control and were 8-2 in front at the final whistle. Ballyboro: Adam Farrell, John Farrell, Sean O’Dowd, Eoin Beattie, Eoghan Mullooly, Billy Murray, Cody Phelan, Noah McLoughlin, Rian Hogan, Eoin Connell (1), Leon Malkowski, Matthew Murray. Sub: Emry (1).
