Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Death

Almost 40 years ago Mary Rogers was becoming a familiar face in Lanesboro because of her newfound relationship with Michael Coffey. A few years later they were to marry and Mary created her own uniqueness in our community becoming a very popular and respected lady. It was with regret we learned of her death on Sunday 25th July at her residence in Church View. Mary from Ferefad, Longford was predeceased by her parents Jim and Angela and her sister Patricia. In recent years Mary had been in failing health and as was the quality of the woman she fought her illness with a great strength and dignity. Mary had a great work ethic and was always busy working and prior to arriving in Lanesboro she worked for the late Albert and Kathleen Reynolds. She was a warm and friendly lady who always had the warmest of welcomes when she met with you. Mary was an outgoing lady who loved nothing better than a good party especially on that included her love for dancing – there was music in her heart and that could be clearly seen in her dancing. She always showed a great dedication to her family and they were always foremost in her mind and conversations. Mary was a wonderful neighbour and friend, her kindness was renowned. Mary’s passing will leave a great void in the community and with anyone that knew her.

Mary’s remains reposed at her home prior to be removed to St. Mary’s Church on Wednesday 28th for her Funeral Mass. Following Mass, she was laid to rest in Clonbonny Cemetery. We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to her husband Michael, son Michael, daughters Tracy, Karina and Chloe, her grandchildren Ryan, Leo, Brion and Aoibhinn, sisters Anne, Philomena, Angela, Carol, and Kate, brothers, James and Gerard, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy

Remarkable Achievement

Fintan Mc Cormack, son of Pat and Rita Mc Cormack, Gortgallon is at it again. Last year Fintan cycled the length and breath of the county of Roscommon stopping at each and every one of the 32 club grounds in the county in aid of the Simon Community.

This year Fintan took to the bike again this time raising funds for Cancer Care West.

We all remember the very hot spell and especially Saturday 24th July when the steaming temperatures went over 28 degrees was the fateful day set for Fintan’s latest venture of cycling to every county ground in Connaught. Along with his dedicated team of Stevie Connor, Kilrooskey and John Carlos, Four Mile House, they set off from the St. Faithleach’s grounds at 5am and completed the cycle at 10.30pm some 17½ hours later when they arrived at Hyde Park Roscommon. As it happens the distance covered was the very same as last year’s cycle 352km.

This was an incredible achievement by Fintan and his team especially in the sweltering heat of the day. Well done to Fintan and his team of Stevie and John.

If you would like to support Fintan on his remarkable achievement and also support Cancer Care West you can go to the Go Fund Me page  “Connacht Cycling Challenge” where the link is https://ie.gofundme.com/f/connacht-cycling-challenge

Over the past week Roscommon underage footballers really produced top notch performances to win both the Under 20 and Under 17 Connaught titles with victories over Mayo and Galway.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club

Blitz On Saturday last the pitch was a hive of activity when the club entertained Roscommon Gaels in what was a great day for all of under 9 players from both clubs. It was great to see three games going on simultaneously and all the youngsters getting game time and playing with smiles on their young faces. It was also great to see so many parents out supporting their young players enjoying themselves.

The club would like to thank the Roscommon Gael club and especially the Gaels Coaching Officer, our very own Seamus O’Neill, for his help in organising the blitz.

Lots of Activity During the past week our U12’s, U17’s and Juveniles were busy with mixed results, winning two and narrowly losing the third. This week competitions continue in a number of grades and we look forward to some more excellent performances.

Good Luck The senior team will play the 2019 League Final on this Wednesday night against Sean Connolly’s. At the time of writing there is no venue listed so just keep an eye on Social media or a notice in O’Brien’s shop window. We wish the panel and management the very best of luck.
