New Paths

Pathways on the Rathcline Road, the Longford Road and the Ballymahon were in a poor state of disrepair and in recent weeks the three pathways were taken up in preparation for replacement paths. The paths on the Longford Road and the Rathcline Road have been completed to a very high standard and by the end of the coming week the path on the Ballymahon Road will also be completed.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Mrs Mary Agnes Flynn, her husband Seamus and their family, The Green on the death of Mary Agnes’s brother Frank McGurran, Rooskey, Co. Roscommon on Sunday 4th July.

Death

Grief and sadness were the general reactions last week when the news broke on Saturday 3rd July of the death of Mrs Phil Tarmey, Cloontuskert. Phil was a native of Moate, Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo before moving to Cloontuskert with her late husband Martin where they established themselves and their family as pillars of our community. She was a devoted wife and mother raising a family of six. Phil was a spirited woman with boundless energy and a wonderful neighbour and friend and where herself and a few of her Cloontuskert neighbours went on many outings. Phil was 99 years old when she died and only four months away from her 100th birthday. She was an outgoing and very sociable lady easy to make friends with and her warm and welcoming smile endeared her to everyone, a lady with a generous heart of gold as many testified to on the news of her death. Her great warmth was remembered by everyone hence the great sadness shared by everyone at the news of her passing.

Phil reposed in Smyth’s Funeral Home, Roscommon until her removal to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague on Sunday evening. Following the Mass of the Resurrection on Monday Phil was laid to rest alongside her husband Martin in Cloontuskert Cemetery.

To her sons Jimmie, Sean (Jack) and Martin, daughters Mai, Bea and Elizabeth, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Birth

We would like to extend our congratulations to Mairead and Luke Brennan, Lehery, on the recent birth of a baby girl.

Book your boat trip.

The Access for All boat is making trips three times a day Monday to Friday – 10am, 12 noon and 2pm and it is a very popular excursion for able bodied and those with disabilities. Bookings are very high and early booking is advisable to ensure travelling at your chosen time. At the moment there are limited excursions out to Lough Ree for its 1½ hr trip on Saturdays. The trip is proving very popular with families and indeed a man in Australia told me the other day that he can’t wait to get home to his native Newtowncashel and the first thing he is going to do is take the trip out on the boat.

The absolutely brilliant trip with an excellent on-board staff will take approximately 1½ hours.

To book a seat call Lisa or Dylan at 043 33 21734 or go online today and book at www.loughreeboattrips.com

Lough Ree Golfing Society

Back in the swing was the Lough Ree Golfing Society when they had their first outing of 2021 at Co Longford Golf Club on Friday last 9th July, and what a wonderful day we all had, weather perfect and the course in excellent condition, which reflected in brilliant scores being recorded. We thank Co Longford GC for their help in organising a great day, as commented on by all present. John Martin burned up the course with a brilliant 41 pts with Joe Mc Grath and Jackie Mc Donnell tied on 36 pts and Joe winning on countback. There were not too many members near the pin on a challenging par 3, Tony Carleton managed to be the closest it, with Martin Mc Alister winning the longest drive. Peter Lally won the Front Nine and Ronan Cullen the Back Nine.

The overall results were 1st John Martin 41pts, 2nd Joe McGrath 36pts and 3rd Jackie McDonnell 36pts.

There were some new members on the day, and anybody who wishes to join is more than welcome. The next outing is to Mullingar Golf Club for the August outing.
