Distillery Yard Session Continues

The Distillery Yard brought live music to Lanesborough on Wednesday evening last with a brand-new Distillery Yard Session that featured celebrated local traditional musicians Noel Carberry (uilleann pipes, low whistle, tin whistle), Sean Sweeney (guitar and vocals) and Noel Sweeney (saxophone, flute, tin whistle). The lads in their very own unique style provided an entertaining evening of music, stories, and craic played to the maximum allowed attendance.

On this coming Wednesday evening from 7pm to 9pm the three talented musicians will once again return; this time the lads will bring along some friends to create what should be another wonderful evening’s entertainment. Ticket price includes a free Coffee or Tea of your choice. In order to comply with social distancing, attendance is limited to 50 people. Seating will be provided. This is an outdoor event, so please dress for the weather.

At the time of writing, I believe, there are a small number of tickets left. Tickets €10 including a free coffee or tea of your choice.  Tickets available by pre-booking on https://tinyurl.com/m4h92ttm

Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Mary McDermott and her family, Lisnacusha on the death of her brother Willie Carroll, Clooneena, Longford and formerly Mohill, Co. Leitrim.

National Award winner

Last week Ireland AM Camera Club announced their nominations for June 2021. When the winner was announced, we were delighted to learn that it was local photographer Brigid Mullooly, Lehery. Brigid has a wonderful album of magnificent local photographs, and it was no surprise that Brigid was honoured with this award. The time work and dedication she puts into her photography is enormous.

We congratulate Brigid on her fabulous winning photograph. The photograph is of a setting sun over the Shannon and complimenting the photograph was Ronnie Johnston and his son Luke in the foreground.

This image is being used by the HSE celebrating the theme of recovery, well-being and healing and will be on display in Roscommon Primary Care Centres.

Cemetery Sundays

As was the case last year there will be no Cemetery Sunday in the parish of Rathcline. Traditionally the first three Sundays of August seen Cemetery remembrance in Rathcline, Lanesboro and Clonbonny cemeteries.

We would encourage everyone with plots in tour cemeteries to continue to mark the occasion by ensuring that all family graves are neat and tidy in honour of those that have gone before us. A little time a few days a week leading up to the annual dates would give all cemeteries a great uplift.

Please ensure you bring a black sack with you when on the clean-up and bring all your cuttings away for disposal.

Graves in the parish will be blessed over the coming week.

Prayers will be offered this week for those buried in Rathcline Cemetery, next week for those buried in St. John’s Cemetery and the following week for those buried in Clonbonny Cemetery.

The Green keeps on giving.

The history of the Bord na Mona estate, The Green, opposite the church, has given so much to the community in every aspect since it was built in the early 50’s when people from all counties and indeed East Germany, as it was then, settled, reared excellent families and gave us many reasons to be proud. They integrated into the community, involving themselves in everything and made our town and parish their own.

The Green with new families is still giving and the story that follows will again show integration from the Green residents.  A number of years ago Michael and his wife Lucy Kajun from Slovakia settled in Lanesboro on the Green. Over the years they played their part in our community development and they reared four children Jakub, Misco, Vickie and Caroline on the Green. Michael a skilled craftsman was the builder of the stone wall at Clonbonny graveyard and the entrance piers to Rathcline GAA grounds while Lucy worked locally.

The parents involved themselves in local occasions and clubs and were always a great encouragement for their children. The two lads joined the Shannon Gaels club and developed throughout the years rarely missing a training session nor a match. They took to the art and craft of Gaelic football as though it was their natural game.

Jacub last year was playing corner back for the Longford U20 team and this year he again at corner back when he was joined by his brother Misco who played midfield on Wednesday night last when Longford Under 20’s travelled to Louth to play the home county in the first round of the Leinster championship.

It was a most memorable game that will no doubt go down in history not only for the huge scoreline in an exhilarating game finishing with a one-point win for Longford 4-11 to 3-13 but the confusion afterwards with the scoreboard reading a draw and the referee declaring Louth as the winners and following consultation with his umpires he changed his call to declare Longford as winners.

It was a tremendous occasion for the parish and the club to have Jakub and Misco Kajun representing us on the same team at county level. The achievement of the pair of lads was not lost to many in our community and I am sure not lost on their parents and family in Lanesboro and back in their native Slovakia. We are rightly proud of the achievements of those two fine young men.

The club also had Seadhna Ryan, son of Seadna and Teresa Ryan, Main Street, on the panel and he was unlucky not to be selected on the team.

Well done to the lads and the very best for a continued run in the Leinster Championship. They will take on Westmeath in the quarter final this Thursday evening in Pearse Park at 7.30pm.

Lough Ree Golfing Society

After a long break due to the pandemic and Government restrictions it is with a happy heart I can mention that the local Lough Ree Golfing Society will have its first outing to Longford Golf Club on this Friday 9th July. The tee is booked for 11am. It will be great to see a bumper number attending the first outing and enjoying the company of local golfers. The Society welcomes new members.

Book your boat trip.

The Access for All boat is making trips three times a day Monday to Friday – 10am, 12 noon and 2pm and it is a very popular excursion for able bodied and those with disabilities. Bookings are very high and early booking is advisable to ensure travelling at your chosen time. At the moment there are limited excursions out to Lough Ree for its 1½ hr trip on Saturdays. The trip is proving very popular with families and indeed a man in Australia told me the other day that he can’t wait to get home to his native Newtowncashel and the first thing he is going to do is take the trip out on the boat.

The absolutely brilliant trip with an excellent on-board staff will take approximately 1½ hours.

To book a seat call Lisa or Dylan at 043 33 21734 or go online today and book at www.loughreeboattrips.com

Ballyboro

A Euro 2020 Tournament with a difference took place on Saturday last when the club grounds were thronged with excited and enthusiastic under 9s. They participated under the guise of the 8 Nations in the Euro quarter finals. The youngsters displayed great skill and flair throughout the afternoon. The Tournament concludes on Saturday week.

After a sluggish start the under 13s assumed control in their game versus Ballymahon. They played some scintillating football and this is reflected in a scoreline of 9-3 in favour of the Ballyboro boys. Team and scorers: Adam Farrell, Eoin Beattie, Aidan Kelly (1), Lucas Moynihan (1), Ciaran McGloin, Noah McLoughlin (2), Rian Shanley, Billy Murray, Cody Phelan, Rian Hogan (4), Oisin Dillon (2). The under 11s found UCL Harps a tad too strong for them. Though the team tried hard they had to give best to a superior UCL team. Ballyboro: Stephen Farrell, Cathal Hanley, Charlie Moynihan, Alphie Murphy (1), Josh Curran (1), Hayden Smyth, Jack Cassidy (1). Subs: Ben Cassidy, Elliott Johnson, Ayden Odemis.
