Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Monday 19th April 2021

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Nationally Recognised

The National Lottery select what they deem great causes throughout the country and this year included in the list of good causes is the Lough Ree Lanesborough Angling Hub’s Access for All boat which is going into use in the coming weeks. They are finalists in the Health and Wellbeing category.

The boat is designed for taking people with disabilities out to Lough Ree where the design of the boat ensures that if it is their choice they can avail of fishing on the lake or they can tour down the lake and learn of the many islands on Lough Ree.

We would like to congratulate them on their inclusion, and we earnestly hope they will emerge victorious in the category.

Spring Clean

Lanesboro Tidy Towns is organising a Spring Clean of the parish next Saturday 24th April. You are encouraged to do a clean-up on your road during next Saturday. The committee has approached a person on each road in the parish to co-ordinate the clean-up in their area/road. Litter bags/pickers will be supplied to each area and the clean-up will take place on Saturday next. The litter will be collected by the committee on Saturday evening. Please ensure that COVID guidelines are adhered to and that you wear a luminous jacket. Thank you in advance for your support in keeping our parish clean and tidy. If you need any further details on the clean up on your road, please contact the Tidy Towns Office 3321977 or a committee member.

Darkness into Light

This year the annual Darkness into Light 5km walk is a virtual event, and it will take place on Saturday 8th May.

While people cannot meet up as in previous years they can walk, run, cycle or swim at sunrise on the 8th or anytime over that weekend doing all this while adhering to Government guidelines.

The vital funds raised will go to Pieta House for suicide prevention. The work of Pieta House will give the gift of hope to those impacted by suicide and self-harm. Pieta House offers a 24/7 counselling service and Darkness into Light event helps to keep this invaluable service available.

You can sign up to partake by logging into the Darkness into Light website www.darknessintolight.ie If you pledge to raising €150 then the sign-up fee will be waived.

If you want to be creative with your activity you can contact me, and I will publicise your creativity and fundraising here in these notes and also in our shop window.

Remember that no matter how you choose to take part this year, you will be giving the gift of hope to those in your community in suicidal crisis, or self-harming.

Great News

It is great to confirm that, after a lot of hard work and preparation, the town’s new passenger boat service for trips on the river Shannon will commence daily sailings on Tuesday May 4th. This service is on board the new access for all boat which will bring out both people with disability and also able-bodied passengers on the Shannon from the bridge and the marina in Ballyleague at 10.30am and 2.30pm Monday to Friday.

This is a great boost for the town and tourism here. We have been waiting for decades for our own daily passenger boat service and here it is. Trips will be of 90 minutes duration and longer if required with angling and sight-seeing or other activities available. Weekend sailings will be available in July, August and September.

To book a seat call Lisa or Dylan here in town at 04333 21734 or go online today and book at www.loughreeboattrips.com

Good weather coming

With the weather prospects for the coming week showing a major improvement it all means that all our scenic walkways and the banks of the Shannon will see a large increase of people availing of the natural beauty of the area. We would like to ask everyone to the cautious especially on the roadway’s but also to be conscious of littering and to bring all litter back to the bins situated locally or to bring it home.

There is an onus on all of us to make sure we keep our community clean and tidy as we prepare to welcome visitors once the Government restrictions are lifted which we are sure will be in the near future.

Back to School

It was great to see all our local students return to the classroom. It was the first time this year that every student could return to school and it created a great deal of excitement amongst students. Although it will be a short term to the Summer holidays we wish a very happy time for students and teachers alike.

The 50/50 Weekly Draw is back! It’s online and in the local shops! First draw is Friday April 30th. We encourage everyone to buy online if you can. The Club would like to wish every success to our Senior County stars who return to training with Longford on Monday April 19th. Best of luck to manager Pauric Davis and Rathcline players Liam Connerton, Iarla O’Sullivan, Daithí Mulvihill and Shane & Oran Kenny and the rest of the Longford squad in the season ahead.  This is hopefully the signal we all need to get everyone back to the playing fields.

The Club has recently invested in new gym equipment for players and members. The equipment has now been installed and the gym looks fantastic. Big shout of thanks to Seán Moran and the FÁS team for all their support in getting things ready for the big return to season training.

A lot of work is still taking place in preparation for the installation of the walkway and barrier fencing around the pitches. This development will be a huge addition to Clonbonny grounds.

Our Sports Capital Application has now been submitted – a big well done to Seadna Ryan. We await the outcome of this hugely important submission which will bring the full redevelopment of the lower pitch. This redevelopment is badly needed and the pitch upgrade, when combined with the walkway and fencing, promises to be a fabulous facility especially for the younger Minor Club members and the Ladies’ Club.

Membership for Rathcline GAA is now being accepted and can be paid anytime up to mid-May. More details next week.
