Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Mind your speed

With the new Mid Shannon Wilderness Park Greenway becoming more and more popular and the number growing greatly it is a wonderful sightseeing so many, and in particular families, availing of our new and healthy amenity.

A big number are parking at the cemetery car park and walking from there as well as the many that are parking down at the barrier.

There is one issue raining its head and that is the number of cars that are going down at a speed not really suitable for that that roadway. There are young people walking and cycling on the roadway as well as the many adults that are walking and cycling that route.

All drivers are asked to be very aware of the numbers cycling and walking along this route and to bear in mind that this route is rapidly becoming a predominately cycling and walking route. A speed limit of 40km per hour is the maximum speed recommended along this roadway and those that are using this road would greatly appreciate if all drivers would adhere to this 40Km as the maximum speed.

Congratulations to Gareth Johnston who on Thursday night last was selected to be County U17 manager for the coming year. Gareth has a successful stint with the County minors a few years ago winning the Leinster League and losing narrowly to a highly fancied Dublin team. We wish Gareth, his backroom team and his panel of players the very best of luck in the coming year.

Rathcline Road

Over the past couple of weeks, I have been inundated with people asking me to mention to people walking their dogs on the Rathcline Road to make sure that when their dogs soil the pathways that they clean up after them. The state of the footpath is unbelievable, and the inattention of owners is truly mind boggling.

If you do not have a means of cleaning up after your dog soiling on the footpaths please don’t bring the dog out when you go for a walk.

Tidy Towns Lottery

Due to the level 5 pandemic restrictions the Tidy Towns lottery has been deferred for the next couple of weeks. The committee hopes that everyone is keeping safe and well and wishes them the best of good health.

Reflections

Now that we are into the New Year and things are quiet, I started to reflect on the past year in our community. We were all looking forward to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade before the Corona Virus descended upon us and brought everything to a sudden halt with a countrywide lockdown.  We as a community showed a tremendous resilience and epitomised what a wonderful community we are. The local community stayed together, shared together and discovered what a beautiful and scenic area we live in. We availed of the discovery by walking Sliabh Bán, the unfinished new Mid Shannon Wilderness Park Greenway, Salmon’s Lane, just to mention a few of the hugely used walkways.

A lift in the restrictions allowed for the waterways of the River Shannon to open. We did not expect any great traffic on the river, but the Shannon filled with Irish people using the river for their staycation. They were loud in their praise of our community for its warmth and welcome. The locals all rallied around and bought local and the shops in the community we kept busier throughout the whole year. Christmas 2020 will go down as the brightest ever in the community with a new Christmas tree and crib at the corner complimenting the tree in Ballyleague and a huge lighting up of our community. Young and old enjoyed the winter wonderland of Lanesboro and Ballyleague.

We did not let the darkness of 2020 determine us instead we forged ahead and became a better community. We showed a true community spirit and while we face into another tough year let us do all the right things, we did last year, and we will come out of all this safely.

Let’s stay apart once more, so that we can stay together for longer, continue to wash our hands and wear your mask.
