Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
Consistent School
For the past two years Lanesboro Community College basked in the glory of being the top feeder school in County Longford to Third Leve Colleges. The year 2020 being a completely different school year and gave us a different type of results. Some of grades were hotly disputed as the grades received were not as expected nor were all the grades determined by the school accepted by the Department of Education.
Nonetheless, Lanesboro Community College once again maintained their high educational standard and while they were not the top school in the county for a third consecutive year the Irish Independent results on Friday last showed they were in second place only 1% behind the leading school thus maintaining their incredible consistency.
There is a wonderful credit due to the entire staff and to the students who are continuing to make Lanesboro Community College the best in Longford. The work ethic throughout the school and the dedication towards each student performing to the best of their ability is truly a reason for each and every member of staff to be proud of the continuing great work they are doing with each student.
We would like to congratulate all the teachers and the students of 2020 for another brilliant year in Lanesboro Community College.
Death
On Tuesday last 5th January we were very saddened to learn of the death in the care of the staff of Costello’s Nursing Home of Vera Donlon, Aughaloughan. Vera, a native of Newtowncashel was in her 84th year was predeceased by her husband Jim. She was a thorough lady whose welcome was always warm and friendly. The warmth of her smile was not only charming but showed a truly genuine nature. Vera, the homemaker, was renowned not only for her kindness but also for her home baking and it was a delight to arrive when one of her legendary cakes was just out of the oven. Vera’s home was a happy and homely one full of the magical music all her family played. Her warmth and wonderful personality endeared her to everyone that knew her. Vera was a devout catholic and she had a great devoutness. She was a great lover of the game of card especially 25. The passing of Vera will leave a great emptiness in the area and the hearts and minds of everyone that knew her.
Her remains were removed from her residence on Thursday last to St. Mary’s Church for her Funeral Mass, followed by interment alongside her husband Jim in Cashel cemetery.
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to her son Padraig, daughters Teresa and Nuala, brother Aidan Carley, son-in-law John, daughter in law Valerie, grandchildren, relatives and friends.
Young Scientist of the Year
Lanesboro Community College has a proud tradition of entrants and award winning at the BT Young Scientist of the year. This year there were 1,300 entrants in the many categories and amongst them were three entries accepted from Lanesboro community College.
This year due to the Corona Virus and the Government restriction meant that nobody got to go and exhibit their presentations and draw the acknowledgement of their peers and visitors alike.
This year Lanesboro Community College was represented in three different categories: Social and Behavioural Sciences where the project was A qualitative and quantitative investigation into the factors that influence the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s) amongst GAA players; Technology – Too Hot -Stop! An integrated temperature scanner and stop-go system and in the Biological and Ecological category – Rising from the ashes: A survey of plants in my local bogs which have been identified as having medicinal properties.
The three entries came from Orla Lyons and her two brothers Conor and Ronan.
Orla had the wonderful privilege of having her project Rising from the ashes: A survey of plants in my local bogs which have been identified as having medicinal properties adjudicated as being the winner in the Biological and Ecological category from the Senior Individual group. This was a phenomenal performance and presentation by Orla to be achieving so highly in what is the most competitive of all challenges amongst your students.
We also congratulate Conor and Ronan on their fabulous work.
This is a wonderful boost for all Lanesboro Community College, and we say a big congratulations to everyone.
Rathcline Super Draw Update
Tickets for the annual Rathcline Super Christmas draw are once again on sale. Tickets are priced at €20 and as usual there are a number of prizes to be won including the first prize of €3,000. There are six prizes in total with €3,000 being the first prize, second prize of €1,000, third prize €500, fourth, fifth and six prizes are €250.
The proceeds of the draw will as usual go to the registration of the club, insurance and the entry fees for all competitions which all fall due at the beginning of each year.
Due to the level 5 restrictions making it practically impossible to sell tickets door to door and with the majority of businesses that sell so many tickets closed the draw has been deferred to Sunday 31st January.

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Mary Brady and her sons Seamus, David, Keith and Mark on the death of Dianne Brady, Church Street, Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary. Dianne was wife of Seamus and we extend our sympathy to their family.

St. Faithleach’s Lotto
The numbers drawn in the St. Faithleach’s lotto draw that took place on Saturday 2nd January at the clubhouse are 9, 17,18 and 24. There was nobody with the four numbers and the €12,000 jackpot remains for the draw on Saturday next 16th January. The three winners of the €40 prizes were Jack Casey, Gardenstown, Derek Thompson, Ballyleague and Bernie Walsh, Kenagh.
You are reminded that tickets are now on sale in O’Brien’s as well as shops throughout the community.

Friends of Asthma Shop
Due to the continuing restrictions the Friends of Asthma charity shop will remain closed until at least the end of January.
Once again, people with items for the shop are asked to hold onto them until the shop reopens. You are asked not to leave them outside the shop as they get wet and in this cold weather begin to get damaged in the frosty weather.

Received Funding
On Friday morning last I received great local news from Gerald Farrell and Micheál Carrigy of the funding of €71,820 from the Town and Village scheme for the provision of enhanced signage and footpath linking residential areas with the town centre.
This is a fabulous follow on from all the local funding that has been received in the community over the past 6 months and we look forward seeing our town enhancement as we welcome visitors to the town during the tourist season.
One thing of note and it is one of the most discussed issue in the town over the past number of months and that is the state of the surface on the Main Street. I would ask all our public representatives to continuously appeal to Transport Infrastructure Ireland, who control the Main Street roadway, to have the surface of our Main Street repaired as it is progressively getting worse week by week and it creates a very poor representation to those using it of our town.
Tidy Towns Lottery
The results of the draw held in the Lanesboro Tourism office on Tuesday last are as follows. The numbers drawn were 8, 12, 21 and 24. There was nobody with the four numbers and the jackpot rises to €3,200 for the next draw.
The winner of the €50 prize was Ellen Bernadette Farrell, c/o Mags, and the three other winners were Caolán Ó Ceallaigh c/o XLNTEE, Patsy c/o Mags and Johnny Hanley, Corrigeen.
Due to current Government level 5 restrictions and the temporary closure of many businesses the draw has been suspended until the restriction have been lifted.
Lockdown
The last week or so have been quite scary nationally which spiralling numbers and appeals from NPHET and the Government to people to cut down dramatical on their daily contacts.
Locals have got great respite from the local walkways, the North Commons woodland walk, Sliabh Bán and the Mid Shannon Wilderness Park Greenway which we are very lucky to have right on our doorstep. Despite the sub-zero temperatures it did not deflect from the huge numbers availing of our fabulous amenities.
Everyone is asked to continue their hand hygiene, social distancing and wearing face coverings to help stopping the spread of this Covid-19.
The Samaritans
There are a great number of Samaritan branches throughout the county and no matter where you are there is one close to you. If you are struggling with life and feel you need to talk to someone then the Samaritans are there for you. All you have to do is pick up the phone and discuss what is one your mind in confidence. It does not matter who you are, how you feel or what has happened to you that phone call is all you need to do. Freephone 116123, every day or night of the year as the service is available 24 hours a day. Don’t let anything fester in your mind make that call immediately.

ALONE – Support for older people
ALONE who support older people to age at home have a COVID-19 support line for those who have concerns or are facing difficulties relating to COVID-19.
Professional staff are available to answer queries and to give advice. The support line is open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm. If you feel you need to call you should do so and have the chat, do not let the day pass without making the call. The phone number is 0818 222024.
St. Mary’s Church
Restrictions
Once again, we are back into restrictions and public celebration of Mass is suspended once again and it looks as though we are going into a long-term lockdown. Mass will be celebrated privately every day by our priests at the usual times Monday to Thursday 10am, Friday 7pm Saturday 7.30pm and Sunday 11.30am and Masses can be seen on the St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro Facebook page.
Mass intentions will continue to be booked for weekdays for the present. People wishing to book masses can do so by contacting Fr Sergiy before or after mass during the week in the Sacristy. All that have booked masses are asked to rebook them for weekdays for the foreseeable future.
Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesdays is temporarily suspended.
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament that took place on Friday evening’s is now temporarily suspended.
