Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

You are in our thoughts and prayers

Presently there are many people and friends from both our communities, young and old, both inside and outside of hospital and suffering greatly with illness and the great unknown. We want to assure you and your families of our support. You are in our mind and prayers and we look forward to seeing you all hale and hearty and out and about very soon.

St. Mary’s Church Lanesboro

To the naked eye there seems to be most of the work done on the refurbishment of the church. There is a great number busying themselves both outside and inside and it look as if the reopening can only be a few weeks away.

Lanesboro Community Games

The AGM of Lanesboro Community Games took place on Wednesday 10th September. The high levels of participation for the past year and the relatively large medal toll were discussed. Changes to the programme at national level also filter to local level thereby requiring a certain amount of reorganisation of events. Provisional plans for the coming year were proposed.

Officers elected are as follows: Chairperson: Marie English, Secretary: Teresa Ryan, Assistant Secretary: Bernie Casey, Treasurer: Pauline Casey, Assistant Treasurer: Sheila Nolan, PRO: Mary Sorohan.

The outgoing committee wishes to sincerely thank John Rooney and Sharon Brady for their many years of hard work for Lanesboro Community Games.

Additional forms (for other children and teenagers within the parish) will be available on the registration night. Please take note of the events scheduled for 2012/2013 and indicate your child’s area of interest.  All intending participants must register in Lanesboro Co-op building on Wednesday 17th October between 7p.m. and 8p.m.There will be a charge of €3 per child and €2.50 for each additional child in a family. Assistance from parents would be much appreciated. It is very important to register immediately as teams must be compiled within the next two weeks. We look forward to another year of high participation and enjoyment.

Halloween Fancy Dress Party

The proceeds of the Halloween Fancy Dress party in the Lifebelt Bar on Saturday night 27th October will go to the Irish Cancer Society. Lanesborough Gun Club AGM

The AGM will be held at 9pm, Friday 26th Oct 2012 in Adie Farrell’s Meeting Room. All members are asked to attend to discuss important club matters.

Death

Sudden death comes as a big shock and this was the case when we learned of the sudden and untimely death on Tuesday last 9th October at his residence in Rathcline of Tom Mc Gushin. Tom, a Dublin native, spent his working life with the Bank of Ireland and while there met and married local Ballyleague lady Mary Farrell. Following his retirement Tom and Mary moved to Rathcline. He was a humble, quiet and reserved and a very well-read man with a distinct and great sense of humour. Tom since his arrival has been a very prominent member of the local parish choir. His singing voice was baritone and he brought life with  his distinctive voice to many a function.

His remains reposed in Glennon’s Funeral Home, Longford on Thursday last and on Friday his remains were removed to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague for his Funeral Mass. Interment following mass took place to Clonbonny cemetery. To his wife Mary, son John, daughters Helen and Kathryn, sisters Shelia, Mary, Frances and Bridget, relatives and friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Ballyleague Bingo

The Ballyleague bingo takes place every Thursday night in Ballyleague hall. The bingo start time has changed back to winter time with the first numbers called at 8.30pm. This week the snowball stands at 8.30pm.

Rathcline Ladies

Rathcline Ladies clothes collection commences again and the club would encourage anyone with unwanted clothes, shoes sheets duvet covers books can you please contact Madaleine at 0861500123.  The clothes collection will be collected from the club on Saturday 17th November and you are asked to have your donations in prior to that date. Your support will be greatly appreciated.

Lough Ree Golfing Society

The next outing for Lough Ree Golfing Society will take place this Saturday 20th October to Moate Golf Club, Co Westmeath.

The tee is booked from 11 am but as it is an open Saturday the Society has to put individual names on the time sheet in the clubhouse. Therefore if you wish to play, can you text Frank (0879730611) as soon as possible to book your time.

So far this year the weather has been kind to the Society on their outings and there is no reason to believe that Saturday at Moate will be any different!! This is the penultimate ‘Golfer of the Year’ competition so it is hoped to see all local golfers there for what will be another enjoyable day out.

Race Night with a difference

Midland Motor club will hold a race night – with a difference- on Sunday week 28th October in St. Faithleach’s GAA clubhouse. There is no charge on entry and the club welcomes and invites everyone. There will be 10 races on the evening with anybody in the audience being invited to race. The cars will be attached to string and winder and those invited will have to wind as fast as they can to take their car over the line first. It should be a wonderful evening of fun and excitement and one not to be missed.

Lough Ree AC

Sligo was the venue for the Connaught Primary Schools cross-country championships on Saturday last. The conditions were atrocious. There were no boys teams from the area involved, and as they did not compete in the local championships they may have found this too much. Full marks to Fermoyle 3rd/4th class girls’ team who braved the elements. Some of them thought partaking in the conditions was ‘great craic’ – it is great to be young. Incidentally, for the benefit of parents, this a Primary Schools competition and the club has no input to it, other than support our members involved in any way possible.

Luckily the rain stayed away as the Fermoyle lassies were in action in the first race. If we had been told that the diminutive Róisin Brennan would finish 34th in the Connaught championship, one would ask if we were talking about the same girl. Yes, we are talking about a very competitive young girl that can lift her performance to meet any occasion.  This is not to take away from the running of Aoife Nolan (25th), who through inexperience, did not get away fast enough at the start, but moved steadily  from 70th to 25th during the course of the race. The two girls were followed home by Aishling Farrell, Anna Maguire and Caoilinn Flood.

Staying with the girls we must congratulate Maeve Dervin, Newtowncashel N.S. who had a great run to finish 2nd in the girls 5th/6th class event for the silver medal. .  At this stage the club deflects to and say “Well Done” to Cashel football team. They are doing Longford proud in the Celebrity Bainisteoir competition. We are not forgetting individual Áine Kennelly, Fermoyle N.S. who had no team but plenty of support from her younger schoolmates.

Let us turn to the boys – Man of the Day must have been Ultan O’Sullivan (Gaelscoil), not for his running, although he is a very useful athlete but because he has a mind of his own – a very useful attribute in today’s world. Ultan was the only male in the group but it did not seem to bother him.

Others to catch the eye were Roxboro’s Brian O’Malley (7th). This was a great result at this level of competition, proving that the “Chalmers stable” is still in form. The school was well represented but final placings are not to hand at the time of writing.  Last but not least, Cian Mc Phillips, Ardagh N.S.  gold medallist in the boys 3rd/4th class event. He mastered the severe underfoot conditions as if it was an everyday occurrence around Ardagh. Our reaction was WOW!!

Finally it was pleasing to meet Breege Cahill with Mohill N.S. and to see her present the Cahill Cup to New Inn N.S. Galway winners of the girls 5th/6th class 1000 metres and read that Lanesboro N.S. won back in 1992 – 20 years ago!!

County Roscommon under age championships take place next Sunday morning in Roscommon town – don’t say you did not know.
