Heritage week a great success at St. John’s
Heritage week at St. John’s Church proved to be a great success with reported excellent numbers availing of the opportunity to visit the church during National heritage week.
The St. John’s congregation was delighted with the turnout and reminds everyone that the church remains open during each day and welcomes visitors.
Annual Pilgrimage to Knock
The annual diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock Shrine will take place on Sunday next 2nd September. The ceremonies will commence at 2.30pm with the anointing of the Sick followed by Mass at 3pm. For those wishing to avail of the bus service from Lanesboro they should note that the bus will leave O’Brien’s Corner at 10.30a.m. and the bus ticket costs €16.
Ros 5K Returns
This week the Ros 5k Road Race will continue on this coming Wednesday 29th August, at 7pm in Boyle and the run will be hosted by North Roscommon AC.

The Lough Ree Athletic Club would like to invite all runners to take part in the series that will take place in Lanesboro on Wednesday 12th September at 7pm. It will be great if the large number that took place last year is surpassed by this year’s numbers. It is a great circuit and should be a wonderful evening for all participants.

Summer Garden Winner

Pilates in St. Mary’s Hall
Pilates will commence for all in St. Mary’s Hall, Lanesboro on Thursday 6th September commencing at 7pm. Pilates is suitable for all abilities and ages. There are a large number of benefits to be gained by Pilates and they include; improvement of postures, re-aligns your spine, increases your core strength and stability, strengthens your back, improves circulation, helps prevent injuries, aids digestion, and improves balance and co-ordination.

Rathcline qualify for semi final
On Wednesday night last in a very damp Allen Park, Newtownforbes, Rathcline and Granard played out a thrilling draw in heavy underfoot conditions. This was a refixed game as the previous meeting of the two teams had to be called off 20 minutes into the game due to the ground conditions.
The draw was sufficient to see both teams qualify for the Intermediate semi-final and it set up a meeting once again of the same two teams in the semi-final in Pearse Park on Saturday week 8th September.
It was great to see a big number from the parish turning out to support the team and we would encourage everyone with a connection to the club to make the journey to Pearse Park on Saturday week to cheer the lads on to what we hope will be a county final on Sunday 30th September.
Lanesboro Bridge Club
The club will reconvene for the coming season on Wednesday 5th September in St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Lanesboro. The competition will commence at 8pm sharp and the club welcomes back all previous members and also invites all bridge players that have not yet joined the group to come along and enjoy an evening of bridge playing and the friendships it brings with it.

Wonderful Prospects for the week ahead
This coming week is a huge one for the Shannon Gaels Minor Club. The week started early with the Under 14 team completing a clean sweep in the shield competition and confirmed themselves as champions.
As I write the Minor team will be competing in the Minor B semi-final against a much fancied Colmcille side. If they beat Colmcille they will play the county final on Sunday next at 2pm in Pearse Park.
The Under 16 team will take on Longford Slashers on Thursday evening in Clonbonny and a victory here will see the lads into the semi-final of the A championship that takes place on Thursday week 6th September at 7pm.
Our Under 13 team will play St. Francis this Tuesday night in Clonbonny in the county final at 7pm.
The Under 12 team play the county final in Pearse Park at 1pm on this coming Saturday where their opponents will be St. Francis, Dromard.
The under10 panel will be participating this Wednesday in a blitz in Pearse Park.
The Under 8 panel as I write is gracing Croke Park in a blitz. It is a tremendous achievement for our young players and their families and I am sure the echoes of Donegal’s great win will still be reverberating throughout the grounds. A proud day for the young players, their parents and the club.
Our Under 6 ‘Cubs club’ will continue to train in big numbers in Clonbonny every Thursday from 7to 8pm.
As you can see this is a very vital week for our club and we hope that all teams will be successful.
We continue to grow as a club and the progression of all our teams this year gives us great confidence for the years ahead. The club is extremely grateful to all our parents for making themselves and their children available throughout the year and we continue to welcome parents and their children that have moved into the parish or who have not yet availed of the opportunity to have their children integrated as part of the wonderful Shannon Gaels club.
The club wishes James Moran a speedy recovery from the wrist injury he sustained last week during a championship game.
The club would like to thank everyone that helped out as the Leinster GAA Roadshow and inflatable pitch arrived on Friday last in Clonbonny.
Well done to the senior team that qualified for the Intermediate championship demi-final on Wednesday night last.

This follows on from Sean Mimnagh’s ’Shannon Grill’ sponsorship of last week. The club is encouraging everybody attached to the club to support their sponsors at all times.
Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club
Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club Search and Rescue unit will hold a social night in St. Faithleach’s clubhouse on Friday night 31st August. Dancing will commence at 10pm and the music will be supplies by Jimmy Hussey, can’t Hardly Play Boys and special guests on the night. Following the recent fire at their clubhouse that caused many hundreds of thousands of euros worth of damage it is vital for them that they replace all the damaged and burned equipment as soon as possible. Lough Ree Sub Aqua club is vital to us as a community as much as it is so vital for the search and rescue they carry out for families throughout the country. It is very important that the entire area comes out and supports the club to get back to its firm standing once again.
Ticket sellers will be out and about throughout the local area over this coming week and we ask you to be as supportive as you possibly can be. Tickets can also be bought in O’Brien’s.
Second Bus to Lough Derg
The bus to Lough Derg on Sunday 16th September is now full. There have been further enquiries and there will now be a second bus put on to cater for the extra people. This bus will travel on Saturday 8th September if there is sufficient interest. If you want to travel on this date you should make immediate contact with Mary at 043-3321969
Indoor Market
The Lanesboro and Ballyleague Indoor Market takes place in St. Mary’s Parochial Hall, Lanesboro, every Friday from 11am to 1.30pm. There is a range of stalls supplying local: home baking, jams, eggs, mushrooms. Also jewellery, beauty products, cards, aloe vera products, books & bric a brac, knitted items, dried flowers & handbags. Fresh flowers, hanging baskets & flower arrangements. Fred’s Fish available – fresh fish for Friday. Free car parking to rear of building (beside the playground). Tea, Coffee and light snacks will also be available. Ballyboro Scouts
The scout troop’s activities are coming to an end for another year but they have certainly have finished on a high. The Scout, Venture and Rover sections enjoyed four and five day camps in Lough Keel, Boyle, and in Ballyglass, Cloontuskert. As part of the adventure at the camps the participants went bivvying – this involves sleeping under the stars with only the minimum of shelter. The bivvying took place on Orchard Island in Lough Keel and in Rathcline woods.
The cub section took part in the Cub Óige in Ardgillian Castle, Dublin. About 2,500 cubs and leaders from all over Ireland and beyond took part in the weekend. Ballyboro cubs deserve great credit because of the weather conditions as a storm blew down their tents. But, in the spirit of scouting, all enjoyed their experience.
Not to be outdone by the others, the Beaver section, the seven to nine year olds, went to Larch Hill, Dublin for a one night camp.
Throughout the year the troop has taken part in camps in Portlick, Athlone, and at the Volvo Race week in Galway. They also helped with various local events including the Aquathon in Lanesboro where the sea Scouts were involved.
As the troop is now on a well-earned summer break, it is important to acknowledge and thank all the leaders for their work and commitment and to ‘well done’ to all the younger generation who were so active in their various sections.
Rathcline GAA
It was a busy week for our senior team with two games down for decision. The re-fixed Championship game against Granard was played in Clonguish on Wednesday last. The game ended all square: 2-7 to 1-10. The result means Rathcline top the league stage of the Championship with an unbeaten record, and will now face Granard in the semi-finals.
On Saturday the squad were beaten by St Columba’s in the league on a scoreline of 0-9 to 0-3. The result leaves us second from bottom in Division one with two games to play. Thanks to all those who supported Rathcline on both times.
Hopefully, by the time you are reading this, the Shannon Gaels under 13 team will have won the Division 2 title. They played Dromard at home last night, Tuesday.
The club are raffling two premium level tickets for the All-Ireland hurling finals. Each line costs just €2.
There was no winner of the €900 jackpot this week. The winning numbers were 10, 23, 28, 33, 34 and 36. The jackpot rolls over to become €1,000 next week. The four winners of €25 each were Ciaran Donlon, Pat O Brien, Ronan Glennon and Padraig Kenny.

‘Night at the Dogs’: St. Faithleachs GAA Minor Club held a hugely successful “Night at the Dogs” on Friday last at Longford Greyhound Stadium. Special word of thanks to the organising committee for their unfailing enthusiasm in the organising of this event. Music in the clubhouse followed the event by Colm Mulligan and a great night’s entertainment was had by all.
