It was particularly good to see so many people attending the blessing of the graves over the past three Sundays in Rathcline, Lanesboro and Clonbonny cemeteries. The time and effort made by so many in the cleaning and preparing of their family graves must be commended on a job well done.
Level 5 Fetac at Community College
Lanesboro Community College proposes to deliver for level 5 Fetac courses commencing this coming September. The proposed courses are Outdoor Recreation, Sports and Recreation, Tourism and Office administration. If you are interested you should immediately contact the college phone 043-3321139.
Did you notice anything?
The work has commenced and is continuing at a great pace at St. Mary’s church Lanesboro. Despite the inclement weather the roof has been removed and it now has felt on and it is latted in preparation for slating.
In recent times despite the area been cordoned off with fencing a number of items has gone missing from the site. If you have noticed anything that you feel may be of interest in the on-going inquiries can you report them to Lanesboro Garda station? All of those in the area that pass the church are asked to be vigilant and if they see anything untoward happening can they please take note and report.
Local connections to Dublin Minors
Leinster Hurling Minor Champions Dublin and Dublin Minor footballers who play in the Leinster Final in Croke Park on Sunday next have strong links to the parishes of Rathcline Kilgefin. Man of the Match in the Leinster hurling final was dual player Conor Mc Hugh. On Wednesday night last he played a starring role in the footballers win over Kildare in the Leinster semi-final scoring 1-3. Conor is joined on the Dublin football panel by his brother Eoghan. Both Conor and Eoghan’s mother is a sister of Ronan Cullen, Rathcline Road. We wish the lads the very best of luck in the Leinster Final on Sunday next.
A further link with to the Dublin Minor hurlers is Eoin O’Donnell who played a prominent part in the retention of the Leinster Minor title from his wing half back position. Eoin is son of Michael O’Donnell nephew of Sean and Gerry O’Donnell and Nuala Gunn, Curraghroe.
We wish Eoin the very best in the upcoming All Ireland semi-final.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Barney, Mary and daughter Rose Mc Cormack, The Green on the death recently of Barney’s sister Mrs Nancy Ryan, Middlesex, England.
Cloontuskert National School
The Parents Association of Cloontuskert National School would like to thank everyone who supported their fundraising events throughout the year. The Parents association would like to send their best wishes to Aileen Mc Conn. Aileen who has been a teacher in Cloontuskert School for the past 11 years is retiring and she is wished a long and happy retirement. The association hopes that both teachers and students have a lovely summer break.
Wedding
The marriage took place at the Church of the Irish Martyrs, Ballycane, Naas Co. Kildare of Donal Casey, son of Theresa and the late Michael Casey and Elizabeth Quinn, daughter of Tommy and Joan Quinn, Woodlands, Naas, Co. Kildare. Bestman was Ivan Colleran, cousin of the groom. Chief bridesmaid was Siobhan Quinn sister of the bride. Page boy was Thomas Quinn nephew of the bride and Flower girl was Maggie Quinn niece of the bride. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Jimmy Doyle, Naas assisted by Mickey Reilly, Lanesboro. The wedding reception was held in Killashee House, Naas. We wish the happy couple many years of wedded bliss.
Duck Pond
The duck pond that lay idle for so long has been brought to life by the good work of Lanesboro Tourism Co-Op and with the local gun Club supplying 20 ducks the pond is again alive with the sound of ducks. A further feature of the reinvigorating the pond is that a mallard duck that was there in previous years has returned to the pond and not only that but it has hatched seven ducklings. It is great to see and hear again the ducks back in the pond and it brings many people to come and enjoy the sights and sounds.
Pilgrimage to Lough Derg
A pilgrimage to Lough Derg will take place on Sunday 16th September. The bus starts at Kenagh and will pick up in Lanesboro, Ballyleague, Scramogue and Rooskey. If you wish to travel you are invited to ring Mary at 043-3321969.
Thank You
Fr, Mickey Reilly would like to say a very special thank you to all our parishioners that took part in the Tax relief Scheme. It was a tremendous success and recently he was informed that a repayment of €44,188.88 would be issued to the parish in the near future.
Rathcline Ladies GAA
Our U14 girls were defeated in the County Final last Monday evening by a strong Carrickedmond team. Well done to all the girls and thanks to the trainer Kieran Feeney for his all the work he put in.
The Senior girls were out in the first round of the Intermediate Championship against Dromard. The girls defeated Dromard with the final score of 2-13 to 1-8 well done to all.
We would like to thank everyone that donated clothes to our clothes collection this year. €575 was raised by this collection.
Diarmuid’s starring role
Last week in the notes I mentioned the leading role that Diarmuid Murtagh played in the successful run of the Roscommon Minor team to the Connacht Final. Well, on Sunday last Diarmuid again came up trumps with another tremendous performance when Roscommon defeated Mayo by one point with Diarmuid scoring the most vital of scores late on in the game. Such was his influence to the team throughout he was awarded man of the match for his performance. Well done Diarmuid.
Alison Smyth Cup
The official launch of the County Longford Ladies Championship too place in Clonbonny on Monday night last. Representatives from the county board and all the Ladies GAA clubs in the county were present for the launch. It was a marvellous event tinged with the sadness of the loss of our own Alison Smyth earlier in the year. In recognition of the contribution made by Alison to both local and Longford Ladies GAA a new cup has been dedicated to the name of Alison and the winners of the senior championship will lift the Alison Smyth cup for the first time.

Great Day in Lanesboro/Ballyleague
Saturday last proved to be a tremendous day in the Lanesboro Ballyleague area when Lanesboro Triathlon club hosted their second Two Provinces Triathlon. The early morning was bright and as the time for the kids triathlon approached it got rainy but this did not quell the enthusiasm of the 40 youngsters taking part. It was indeed a terrific spectacle to see such a number of young people between the ages of 8 and 15 taking part. It was a thoroughly enjoyable event for the kids and to see the competitiveness of them was amazing.
The days brightened in time for the main event and with, in the region of 290 taking part in the event there was a great scramble to take a lead emerging from the 750m swim in the bay area. From there it was on to the bike and the race to Scramogue crossroads and back for the final leg of the event which was the run taking the competitors through the quarry to the Rathcline Road and following the 5k run they made their way back down Main Street to where it all began and finishing line at the small harbour behind the car park. In the end Eamon Mc Andrew from Sligo emerged as the winner if the event and local lady Marie Sudway, Rathcline Road, kept up her recent fantastic form and leading the ladies home in style.
All in all it was a tremendous achievement for the Lanesboro Tri Club but also for the race organiser James Gallagher and his hard working team. It was a credit to them for their thoroughness and professionalism and it definitely put Lanesboro/Ballyleague on the map. There is a saying of events going from strength to strength and there is no doubt that this saying applies to this event. It also reinforces the fact that the communities of Lanesboro and Ballyleague work mighty together and let’s hope that this event is the start of big things for us as one community.

Cúl Camps Monday Week
As in previous years these camps provide boys and girls – between the ages of 6 and 13 – with an action-packed and fun-filled week of activity during the summer holidays which revolves around maximising enjoyment and sustaining participant involvement in Gaelic Games while also supplying each child with a full kit and gear bag. This year our local camp will take place again in Clonbonny from Monday
30th July to Friday 3rd August. Numbers have been strong in our camp over the past number of years and we hope that this year will exceed all previous years and break all records. Let your kids be part of a wonderful week in Clonbonny.

Lough Ree A.C.
Admiration is the word that comes to mind when describing our qualifiers at the All-Ireland Athletics Finals in Tullamore over the weekend. The club was not expecting medals, but hoping the youngsters would give a good account of themselves – which they did – and not be overawed by the occasion.
Orla Keane’s ambition at the beginning of the year was to get to the National Finals. She was not expecting to be competing against 11 year olds from other counties that were almost the height of her mother and she was happy it was not rugby she was competing in.
Larissa Noone was competing in the U14 Hammer event and great credit to her for taking on the best in this highly technical event before an audience of 50 at the hammer cage.
Stephen O’Dowd faced the same circumstances in the U15 hammer. It was good to see that as the event progressed so did his confidence. He was becoming more consistent in his throws and improving on his personal best.
Sunday was another day in Tullamore bringing Radek Pawlonski into action in the U13 Shot and Javelin and Larissa Noone returning for the U14 Discus. While medals were never on the cards Radek obliged with a PB in the javelin and Noone too improved her discus throw.
The club learned a solitary lesson – more coaching must be organised for those opting for the highly technical events.
Ladybird Shop
The Ladybird shop on Main Street is having an ‘Olympic Promotion’ to raise money for new school sports equipment. Donations of any sports kits and football boots would be much appreciated along with ladies and gents clothing, shoes, school uniforms, linens and toys. The Ladybird shop thanks everybody for the on-going support.
Launch of 15th Lough Ree Environmental Summer Festival
The 15th annual festival will be launched in a grand open air performance on the 27th July in the newly cleaned up Lanesborough Commons Quarry. Officiating at the launch will be Castlerea native, celebrated writer and journalist John Waters. The line-up for this auspicious evening’s entertainment will include harpist Edel Loftus, trad musician Noel Carberry and Irish dancing. Food and wine will be served and sky lanterns will be released (conditions permitting) on the night to mark the occasion.
The Lough Ree Environmental Summer Festival will run from 9th Aug—12th Aug. For details on the festival programme, log on to www.loughree.ie
This year the festival will focus on the rich natural heritage and celebrate the great outdoors with Bushcraft camping and Wooly Ward’s pet farm and Royal Canal boat trip with Dick Warner and a herbalist workshop for grown-ups. There will be glass painting classes and a young scientist competition ‘Science helping the Environment’ for young students in collaboration with Abbott Longford. You are all encouraged to avail of all the many events and entertainment available throughout the festival. Brochure and booking form are available from the Co-Op or any of the local businesses.
Indoor Market
The Lanesboro and Ballyleague Indoor Market takes place in St. Mary’s Parochial Hall, Lanesboro, every Friday from 11am to 1.30pm. There is a range of stalls supplying local: home baking, jams, eggs, mushrooms. Also jewellery, beauty products, cards, aloe vera products, books & bric a brac, knitted items, dried flowers & handbags. Fresh flowers, hanging baskets & flower arrangements. Lanesboro Gun Club
A meeting will be held at 10pm, Friday next 20th July 2012 in Adie Farrell’s meeting room. All members are asked to attend to pay any overdue membership monies owed and to discuss important club matters.

Congratulations to the Rathcline Ladies on beating Dromard in the first round of the Championship on Sunday last.
Congratulations also to St Faithleachs clubman Diarmuid Murtagh and the rest of the Roscommon minor footballers on winning the Connaught Title.
Commiserations to the Longford senior footballers and to the Roscommon seniors on their respective qualifier defeats at the weekend.
The Rathcline Seniors are scheduled to play Kenagh in a league game this Friday in Clonbonny. Please check fixtures for confirmation of time.

Lanesboro Triathlon Club
The Lanesboro ‘Two Provinces’ Sprint Triathlon in association with AUDI ATHLONE at Michael Moore Car Sales’ took place on Saturday last July 14th. It was a fantastic day for the Lanesboro Tri Club & the local community of Lanesboro / Ballyleague. Between individual entries & relay team entries, up to 290 competitors from all corners of the country descended upon Lanesboro to take part. First male across the finish line after completing the 750m swim, 20k cycle and 5k run was Eamon Mc Andrew (Sligo) in a time of 1hr 01m 37s. There was then a super cheer from the large crowd gathered at the finish line to see our very own club member Marie Sudway (Lanesboro Tri Club) take the 1st female prize in a time of 1hr 10m 16s. Congratulations to the overall winners, category winners and to everyone that took part on the day. The Lanesboro Tri Club would like to thank Audi Athlone in Association with Michael Moore car sales for sponsoring our club race. Thanks to all the people & clubs of the Lanesboro/Ballyleague community, for giving such a warm welcome & support to all the competitors along the course. Special thanks to everyone who volunteered to help marshal on the day as without your assistance, the event could not be such a success. A massive well done to all our club members and to the Two Provinces race team under the direction of James Gallagher, who worked tirelessly for long hours, to pull off a superb local event. Months of hard work and preparation paid off as the race ran very smoothly and of course very safely.
Congratulations to all who took part and did so well in the Kids Triathlon also. It was fantastic to see 40 young children between the ages of 8 and 15 thoroughly enjoying their race. There is a bright future for Triathlon around the Lanesboro area!!
Best of luck: The club would like to wish our 3 members Niall O’Donohue, Joe Masterson & Ronie Masterson the very best of luck when they take on the mammoth challenge of Ironman Bolton in the UK next Sunday July 22nd. The race will see them compete in a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike ride and finish with a 26.2 mile run. Wishing you all the best from Lanesboro Tri Club.
