Broadcom Masters Award
Many congratulations Éabha Kenny daughter of Tommy and Deirdre Kenny, Cloontuskert who won the Broadcom Masters Award at the Scifest National Final 2018. Éabha will represent Ireland at the International at the prestigious International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix Arizona from Sunday next 12th to 17th May. It is a most magnificent achievement on Éabha’s behalf, and we wish her every success in Arizona.
Homecoming Concert
Former Rathcline Road resident Fran Deffew will make a triumphal return to his native sod when along with band members of Rake the Ashes will play St. Mary’s Hall on Friday night 24th May in the ‘Back to the Boro’ concert at 8.30pm.
Fran teamed up with the members of Rake the Ashes when they played together in Cassidy’s Pub in Camden Street. They have been on the rise since their formation gaining wide acclaim no matter where they played. Their music genre is traditional, ballad and folk.
This night will be one of the best to hit Lanesboro Parish Hall in many years and it is a night not to be missed by anyone. Tickets €10 are on sale in O’Brien’s and already there has been a steady demand for them.
Jobs Fair

The Regional Transition Team is hosting the above event in Mount Lucas Training Centre. This event is organised solely for the casual, seasonal and fulltime employees of Bord na Mona. Businesses with regional job opportunities in the manufacturing and construction will attend and a number of job offers will be made on the day.

Darkness into Light
The annual Darkness into Light walks take place next Saturday, 11th May in The Mall at 4:15am

Community Games
The Lanesboro Community Games will take place on Sunday next 15th May at Lanesboro Track at 12 noon. It is very important that parent bring their young people to participate. This is a fabulous day of fun and the youngsters really enjoy the company of all the youngsters of the parish and the competitiveness that goes with all the track and field events. It is also a great day for parents as they mingle and get to know the many newcomers to our community over the past year.
Lanesboro has an enviable history in Community Games in both county and national finals and we would love to see our young people enjoying themselves in parish, county and national finals. Come along and have a fabulous time at the track in all the track and field events and let’s strive to continue the excellent tradition of the Community Games in Lanesboro.
Saturday next is our Horse Fair
The re-enactment of the traditional Lanesboro Horse Fair which is now a well-established annual event in the Lanesboro events calendar will take place this year on Saturday next 11th May.
This is a wonderful family day out, a day to remember, and a re-enactment of olden times, where it was once said that the Lanesboro Fair was so big that you could walk on the back of horses from the church in Lanesboro to the church in Ballyleague. The sight of bartering over the price of horse is something worth seeing and an event in itself. It is a historic event run by a dedicated committee and we look forward to a huge crowd turning up to keep this wonderful tradition going and also to support the hard-working committee.
Lanesboro Bridge Club
The President Una Clarke’s prize was played for on Wednesday 3rd and Wednesday 10th April and the results of the competition are: 1st President’s Prize Una Lawlor, 2nd Gemma Douglas, 3rd Cyril Hussey. 1st session winner – Phil Chalmers, 2nd session winner – Eileen Kelly.
Sympathy
On a personal note I would like to express my deepest sympathy to Marian McGee, her daughter Linda, son Conor and the extended McGee family on the sudden death during Saturday night. Eugene was a man who was legendary in the world of business, oral and written media and also in team management where he was immensely successful with the many teams he trained.
Many years ago, Eugene sowed the seed of journalism in my mind when he asked me to cover the Lanesboro each week for the Longford Leader. He brought me into a world that since then I have loved every minute off and it has been a pleasure to record all the events in our area since then. I will be eternally grateful to Eugene and his loss will leave a great void in my mind and heart. May he rest in peace.
Honda 50 Run
The annual Honda 50 Run returns to Lanesboro on Sunday 9th June. Registration will take place in St. Mary’s Hall from 10.30am to 12.15pm. The fee is €20, and it includes you in a raffle. The run will commence at 12.15pm with refreshments before and after. No helmet no run. All bikes are welcome. For details contact Jimmy 087 2289468.
Lanesboro Tourism Co-Op Jobs
Lanesboro Tourism Co-Op is a local voluntary community group that does so much great work in and around our community. It has our town looking pristine throughout the year and especially in the build up to the Tidy Towns competition. Their dedication to maintaining the town and Shannon banks area is a credit to them and their Social Scheme working team. At present they have two vacancies for staff to help continue this great work. The vacancies are in Office Administration and Caretaker. Participants must be receiving a job seekers payment for 12 months. The minimum wage is €225 for 19 hours a week. If you are eligible apply to the Tourist Office or phone 043 33 21977 or 086 1427143.

Dates for Grave Blessings
The dates have been set for the Blessing of the Graves at the three graveyards in the parish of Rathcline. The first blessing will take place in Rathcline graveyard on Sunday 7th July followed by Lanesboro on 14th July and Clonbonny on Sunday 21st July.

Crumlin are a group established some 3 years ago to raise funds for Our Lady’s
Children’s Hospital Crumlin. The group has raised almost €50,000 in the past 3
years. They do this through an annual fundraiser by way of a crawl/walk/run
along the canal in Ballymahon and a monster draw with some excellent
prizes
This year the group will be selling tickets at
SuperValu Lanesborough on Saturday 18th May. Tickets are €5 each or

If you don’t have a photograph from your time on the Green a family photograph from a later date will do. You can also drop them into me in the shop where I will scan them and return them to you there and then. I am also looking for photograph of the apprentices and lodgers that stayed on the Green.

On Monday night last, the draw took place for the weekly 50/50 draw. This week our winner was Steve Ormsby, proprietor of Clarkes Bar. The winning envelope this week was worth €415. We congratulate Steve on his win and thank him for his continued support of the 50/50. Let us hope that next week it can be your turn, all you have to do is to buy a ticket for €2 to be in the draw.
Tickets are on sale in local shops and businesses throughout the town at €2 each or 3 tickets for €5. As you now know there are two alternatives for those that would like to play the 50/50 by paying in advance. Option 1 is the green envelope where you pay €50 for a six-month term with one free draw and Option 2 is the pink envelope where you pay €100 for a 12-month period with two free draws. Lough Ree Athletic Club
The club is anxious that all youngsters in its catchment area of the parishes of Killashee, Cloontagh, Newtowncashel, Kilgefin/Ballyleague and Rathcline/Lanesboro avail of the facility that the Lough Ree Athletic Club offers. We cater for all youngsters and look to give them a great grounding in the multi event sport that is athletics. Come along on a Tuesday evening at 6.30 or on a Sunday at 12.30pm except Sunday next where the Community Games will take place from 12
Last Saturday was the date for the Under 9 to Under 11 Age Indoor Competition at Athlone indoor arena while this coming weekend we have the parish Community Games on Sunday 12th May at the track. For many of the younger competitors this was their first taste of real competition and they acquitted themselves very well against some stiff competition from Carrick on Shannon, North Leitrim, Roscommon, Athlone SRL, new clubs Castlerea Crusaders and Suck Valley (Four Roads area) as well Longford Athletic Club and came away with a total of medals . Our medal winners were Oisin Dillon, Maryana Donlon, Hannah Farrell, Sofia Cox, Mikey Sorohan, Emma Feeney and Daragh Donlon.
Looking forward to seeing a good turnout at the parish Community Games at 12.00pm at the track next Sunday 12th May. Training continues this Tuesday at 6.30 and Sunday at 12.30
Past Pupils of Lanesboro Tech
Are you a past pupil of Lanesboro Vocational and Technical School or its successor the Lanesborough Community College? Did you or your children or grandchildren attend the school at Knock on the Ballymahon road out of Lanesborough over the years?
If the answer is YES to that question, then your support is now urgently needed for a major campaign to give the modern-day school an all-weather astro turf football pitch for the first time.
Every year the students at the school in Knock, Lanesboro experience difficulties with flooding and water-logging of the old grass pitch inside the running track when the heavy rainfall hits, which is why a new committee is presently fundraising to build a new state of the art astro turf pitch there and drain and re-surface the old grass pitch.
This is an appeal to past pupils of ‘the Tech’ and Lanesborough Community college to help us raise match funding to build the new facility at a cost of over 250,000 Euro.
In return for your support, the name of every past pupil and donor will be published in a new Souvenir Brochure Journal that will be made available on Saturday June 15th, 2019 at special celebratory function as part of the Ballyboro Oskar Night ceremony in the Longford Arms Hotel. With the season
winding down just two games were played last week. First up were the under 12s
and they faced old rivals Newtown in their last league game. The game was
closely contested with much good football played by both teams and it ended
fittingly in a draw, 1-1. Christian Donlon scored the Ballyboro goal in the
last minute. Team: Aidan Kelly, Jack Brogan, Anthony Cox, Conn Maxwell, Ethan

The under 8s enjoyed their joust with

Oliver Molar donned the black and white.

who qualified for the National Shield final when they defeated Kerry in the
semi-final at Abbeycartron on Saturday last.

O’Grady and Denis Crinigan comprised the winning team, while Stephen Ormsby, David

at Abbeycartron when Newtown, Melview ,Kenagh and Ardagh provide the opposition

Streete at 12.30 in the Premier Division Shield. On Monday next the under 14s

Leader Cup
On Friday evening last we were on the road again this time to Oliver Lynch Park where we took on Abbeylara. This was a game of two halves and in the end, we were well beaten. For such a young and talented side, we were going very well but back to back games against the county finalist for the past few years told on our young players. There is a break from senior football for the next number of weeks and it did not come too soon for our lads to rest up recharge the batteries and then prepare hard for the next rounds of the league and upcoming senior championship. We look forward to the lads coming back refreshed and full of vim and vigour.
