Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
Scór na nÓg returns to Lanesboro
Saturday night next, 19th
November, see the return, once again, of the County Longford Scór na nÓg to St.
Mary’s Parish Hall. The night’s entertainment will commence at 8.30pm and
patrons are advised to take their seats early. The Scór competition is a
wonderful night’s entertainment with 6 clubs competing for a place in the
county final later in the month in all of the following disciplines Figure
Dancing, Solo Singing, Instrumental Music, Recitation, Ballad Group, Question
Time, Novelty
Act and Set Dancing.
Young people boys and girls have spent so much time preparing
for this big night and we hope that the hall will be filled to the rafters in
support of our own Shannon Gaels who will be competing in 4 events – sketch,
Ballad Group, Solo Singing and Quiz. Our sketch team will be defending the
county title they won last year for the first time so come along and cheer them
on. Others to compete on
Saturday night are Mostrim, Southern Gaels, Ardagh, Longford Slashers and
Legan.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to John Bill and
Teresa Hanly and family, Padraig and Luke Hanly and their sister Eileen,
Ballagh, on the death in Wexford recently of their sister Maisie Monahan.
National Award Winner
Throughout the weekend there was great jubilation and
celebrations at the Innis Ree Lodge Nursing Home, Ballyleague, where Eileen Burke
was announced a winner of the National Nursing Home Director/person in Charge
Award in the Citywest Hotel, Dublin. The national awards evening took place on
Thursday night last and Eileen emerged a national winner from a very select
number of nominations.
We congratulate and acknowledge Eileen’s great work at Innis Ree
Nursing Home.
Lough Ree Athletic Club
The
Connaught Cross Country Championships for the Under 11, 13,15, 17 and 19 age
group took place in Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim on Sunday last
13th November. The course was a typical cross country course with
lots of Leitrim hills and hollows and even more mud, to test the endurance of
any cross country runner. Orla Keane was our first athlete home in the
under 11 age group. Despite being the fourth fastest sprinter in
Connaught over 60m, Orla’s stamina has improved considerably as a result
of the 8 road runs over the last two months and she finished well up the field
, she was closely followed home by Caoilinn Flood who will be eligible for this
event for the next two years. If a sprinter and an eight year old can finish
this well up the field how would a natural born middle distance runner fare?
This is a question for all you distance runners out there who ran and enjoyed
all the timed road runs to ask yourselves. A warm welcome to the newest
recruit to the club, Shane Mc Cormack. Shane ran in the Under 17 4000m
metres and in his first competitive cross country race, despite being only 15
years old, succeed in finishing in 12th position and in doing
so got himself a place on the Connaught Provincial Team for the All-Ireland in
the Curragh in two weeks’ time. Congratulations Shane and best of luck in
the All-Ireland.
