Wedding
The marriage took place at
St. Patrick’s Church, Clogher, Co. Tyrone on Friday last of David Nolan, eldest
son of Paddy and Anne Nolan, Mahoraveen and Caroline Donaghey, daughter of
Willie and Marie Donaghey, Clogher. Bestman was Kevin Nolan, brother of the
groom and groomsmen were Seamus Mc Nerney and Paul Brady both friends of the
groom. Chief bridesmaid was Breda Donaghey sister of the bride and the
bridesmaids were Nicola Donaghey sister of the bride and Catherine Devine
friend of bride. The flower girls were Erin and Sarah Donaghey nieces of the
bride. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr Laurence Dawson assisted by
Fr. Michael Reilly. The reception was held in the Slieve Russell Hotel. We wish
the happy couple many years of wedded happiness.

Ladies Leinster Quarter Final
The Rathcline Ladies make
the long journey to Drogheda on Saturday next 1st October to play
Newtown Blues in the Leinster Ladies semi-final. The achievement of the ladies
this year has been nothing short of startling considering at the start of the
year they were struggling to put a team together but as time went by the ladies
grew in strength and numbers and are rightfully back in their rightful place in
Ladies football.
On Saturday next in Drogheda
at 3pm the team will represent the area and we wish them a hugely successful
hour’s football. It is not time for their tremendous run to finish and it is
hoped that a large crowd will travel to support the ladies and cheer them on to
a Leinster semi-final.
Directions to the Newtown
Blues club grounds are Lanesboro to Mullingar, out through Delvin, into Kells
onto Slane and straight through to Drogheda. Approaching Drogheda you will meet
3 roundabouts, the first two you will follow straight through towards Drogheda,
the third you will be taking the Drogheda exit and you will continue down that
road until you come to a turn left for Termonfeckin (signposted) and you will
continue straight about 2½ miles until you come to the club grounds on your
left hand side. A copy of this route is available in O’Brien’s shop for those
travelling.
Charity Fight Night
Following on from Last
year’s hugely successful fight night The Irish Prison Service Boxing Club is
again staging a Fight Night at the Confey GAA Club, Leixlip, Co. Kildare on
Saturday 15th October. Local girl Helen Feeney will once again be
stepping into the ring on this charitable night and she is seeking your
generous support. This year the designated charity is Canteen Ireland which is
a nationwide support group for young people that have or had cancer. The
thought of a young person suffering with cancer does not bear thinking about
and if you contribution can be of some help then you are doing tremendous work
for these young people. There is a sponsorship card on the counter in O’Brien’s
shop and please donate whatever you can.

chat among ourselves where we can exchange tips, recipes and

Lanesboro
Badminton Club
The
Club is holding an “Open Night” on Thursday 29th September at 8pm in
St. Mary’s Parish Hall. Badminton is a great sport for all ages which
helps improve balance and hand-eye co-ordination as well as fitness. Club
members will be there on the night to welcome anyone interested in taking up
the sport and indeed those who have played before. Rackets will be
available for use.
Rathcline GAA
All roads
lead to Drogheda for Rathcline ladies this Saturday October 1st. It
is a great achievement for the girls who have reached the Semi-Finals of the
Leinster Championship. The girls play Newtown Blues of Drogheda at 3pm on
Saturday afternoon. We wish them the best of luck in this match and we hope
that they can reach the final. For anyone wishing to travel to the match please
contact Madeline on 0861500123 as soon as possible as a supporters’ bus will be
organised if there are sufficient numbers interested in travelling. For anyone
else travelling independently, please note that the Newtown Blues pitch is
located on the Termonfeckin road out of Drogheda.
The
ladies would also like to thank everybody who supported a very successful table
quiz which they held last Saturday night in the Peer Inn.
Hard luck
to the men’s senior team who were beaten by Mostrim in the league last Saturday.
The team face Colmcille away on Saturday evening next. Please check fixtures to
confirm time.
All clubs
in the Parish are asked to keep the meeting room in Clonbonny Clubhouse free on
Monday and Friday evenings between 7pm and 9pm for the next two weeks to
facilitate Scór na nÓg preparations with the Minor Club.
Further recognition for Paddy
Following
last week’s great news of Marty Parker being appointed to referee the Roscommon
Senior Championship Final comes the excellent news that another local man Paddy
Neilan, Ballyleague was awarded the Roscommon County Intermediate Championship
Final on Sunday next in Hyde Park where St. Dominick’s will play Padraig
Pearses at 4pm. Good luck Paddy and your team of officials. It is a tremendous
achievement for the St. Faithleach’s club to have two of their referees
referring the two highest competitions in county Roscommon.
Lanesboro Triathletes Swimmers Tackle
Lough Derg
The
weekend before last saw the first ever organised set of long distance open
water swimming races come together over a two day meet in Killaloe, Co Clare
near the shores of Lough Derg. The swims consisted of a ½ mile and full mile
swim in the lake with a 5 Kilometre Swim on the Sunday morning from Killaloe to
Ballina on the opposite side of the Shannon. This particular swim was aptly
named “The Long Way to Tipperary Swim “as it started in Clare and finished in
Tipperary.
The
events were to promote the very fast growing sport of open water swimming and
of course attracted many of the top Irish Swimmers including those in the High
Performance Swimming Squad in training for the open water 10k swim in the
Olympics in London next year. Chris Bryan and Ferdia Kenny were just two of the
top full time swimmers who signed up for all the swims, Chris having just
returned from the World Open Water Championship where he placed 8th
and from the European Championships in Israel where he finished 11th
in a hugely competitive field. The women’s filed also attracted the top
swimmers and triathletes with Ailbhe Carroll and Lynne Algar going in all
events also.
Three
hardy souls from the Lanesboro Triathlon Club threw their proverbial hats in
the ring some time ago long before the weather took its relentless toll on all
of us. Marie Sudway, Marie Keane and Colm Daly had been enjoying their open
water swims in Lanesboro over the Summer so the logical step was to take their
swimming to the next level and compete in this inaugural open water swim meet.
Colm and Marie had competed in a few triathlons in the summer and Marie had a
number of Aquathons and relay swims under her belt so it seemed like a good
idea at the time.
Marie
Sudway was competing in the 5 K, Marie Keane was competing in the mile and the
5 K and Colm had signed up for all three. On the Saturday morning the weather
was just as it has been for some weeks now, wet and windy and wind on a lake
can cause its own problems. Colm was going in the first race, the ½ mile which
would be followed exactly an hour later with the mile race. He is a known as a
strong swimmer but was in Gold Standard Company so had to start fast to make
any impression in the race. He sprinted towards the first buoy behind the lead
women who gradually pulled away from him but he maintained a high pace
throughout the race to avoid any collisions or contact with other swimmers to
exit the lake in just over 12 minutes where he was delighted to discover that
he was the fourth male over all against the professional swimmers. Chris Bryan
led Ferdia Kenny to the finish separated by a solitary second as predicted and
Lynee Algar led Ailbhe Carroll over the line in the women’s category.
An
hour later all Colm and Marie went to the line with the top swimmers all
prepared to do battle again in the mile race. The longer distance meant that
the wind and chop in the water would have some effect on swimmer’s navigation
skills so sighting the buoys correctly was difficult but crucial. When the gun
went the field sprinted for the first buoy and both Colm and Marie were in the
thick of it .The top swimmers both male and female had again made a break for
it from the start and were difficult to follow and Colm was quickly on his own
but was then joined by seasoned French swimmer Pierre Fayolle. The pair went
neck and neck to the finish pushing each other all the way with Colm making a
last sprint from the final buoy to hold Fayolle off by 14 seconds. Meanwhile
Marie was having the swim of her life as she battled through the large field to
steadily pick off swimmers one by one and was not too long reaching the finish
line. The race was won by the exact same top swimmers in the male and female
category as the ½ mile race but Marie and Colm were delighted to discover the
Colm had again finished just outside the podium in 4th place and
Marie was a magnificent 5th in the women’s race.
On
the Sunday morning was the daunting 5 K swim to Tipperary. The lake was very
choppy and correct navigation would again be crucial. The top swimmers all
arrived again to join the hardy few who had competed in all the races and
plenty of new fresh swimmers just for this event. When there gun went the usual
sprint for positioning took place and everyone headed for the first turn buoy close to the shore which would send swimmers
into the wide expansive Lough Derg.
Immediately
it became clear that the chop in the water was making sighting of the buoys
impossible and swimmers became disorientated and the field scattered across the
lake. This became a nightmare for the safety boats and canoes as they had to
keep redirecting the stronger swimmers and rescue those who could not continue.
The 5 k swim was quickly becoming a 6 k swim as Colm and the two Marie battled
on towards the river that left the lake. As the flow had been cut by the ESB
for safety reasons there was no natural assistance from the river after the
swimmers exited the lake. The swim continued down the river and outside
Killaloe sighting again became a problem as swimmers had to locate the narrow
entrance to the canal which would bring them parallel to the town and down to
Ballina.
The
canal was tight and the final Kilometre and a half or so put swimmers under
pressure as they jostled for position amongst while tiredness and the cold
began to take effect. A sharp left turn out of the canal to the final sprint
across the river to the Tipperary side where the winner again was Chris Bryan
and Professional Triathlete Bryan Keane in second place and Ailbhe Carroll
turned the tables on Lynne Legear to finish the swim in first place in the
ladies race. It should be noted that all of the top swimmers recorded times
well below their regularly posted times, in some cases up to 10 minutes and
this was due to the adverse conditions. Marie was first home from the Club in a
time of 1 hour and 35 mins and in 8th place in the ladies race Colm
completed the swim in 1 hour 38 mins and was 16th Male and Marie did
it in 1 hour 48 mins and was 11th Female home.
This
was a fantastic achievement for the three swimmers and in particular because
they are in the upper age limits of masters swimming. Colm moves to the over 60
category in January, Marie races currently in the over 50 age group and Marie
competes in the over 40s. Well done to the three of them from the rest of their
colleagues in Lanesboro Triathlon Club.

9: Ballyboro Lions V Newtown AFC. Final score 6-5.
Our
U9’s had a win at home to Newtown on Saturday last.
Under
11 Group D: Ballyboro Lions V Gaels Untied. Final Score 7-1 Ballyboro kicked
off the new season in fine style with a good win over Gaels in Drumlish on
Saturday last. Boro Keeper, Dylan Donlon was in fine form along with defence of
Nathan McGovern, Michael Dunne & Keelan Gallagher. Midfield, Liam Ormsby &
Cian O’Brien worked their socks off with forwards PJ Connaughton, Evan Chalmers
& new signing Mark Gaynor causing the Gaels all sorts of trouble. Goal
scorers for Boro were: Liam Ormsby (hat-trick), Cian O’Brien (2), Evan Chalmers
(1) & Michael Dunne (1).

11 Group C: Ballyboro Tigers V Kenagh United. Final score 2-0.
Our
U11 Tigers were defeated at home on Saturday last by Kenagh United.
U13
Girls: Ballyboro FC V UCL Harps. Final score 4-1.
Our
U13 girls played their 1st league game of the season away to UCL Harps. The
girls started strongly with a long distance goal from mid-field by Sarah Scally
in the opening minutes. This was quickly followed up with another goal for Boro
from Ellen Irwin. Boro were in full control with great support from all the
squad. Still in fighting form when Sarah Scally scored another goal in the 15
minute & one more goal by Ellen Irwin just before half-time. UCL came back
in the 2nd half putting our defence to the test but they were no match for
goalkeeper Rebecca Cox who had an outstanding dame along with Aoife McLaughlin
& captain Áine Halpin in defence. Hannah Shea & Marie Kelly also had a
good game in mid-field. All of the Ballyboro squad (Natasha Hegarty, Olivia
Lisle, Aisling Casey, Jillian Banahan and Isobel Farrell) had a great game
& put in a huge team effort to secure Boro’s win on the day.
U13
Girls – Leinster Cup Qualifiers: Well done to our U12 Girls who participated in
the Leinster Cup Qualifiers on Saturday last in the Oscar Training Centre in
Coolock, Dublin. Ballyboro Girls were drawn in a tough group with team from
Dublin & Wexford. There were 5 teams in each group and Boro first met
Kilmore Utd from Wexford. All games were 7 minutes aside and played on Astro
turf. Boro girls played well & held the game until the last minute when
Kilmore scored a lone goal. Boro then met Trim and won easily 3-0 with 2 goals
from Sarah Scally & a goal from Ellen Irwin. Our next components were
Shelbourne and we knew they would be a tough team, where we were defeated 3-0.
Boro’s final game was against Bridge Rovers which ended in a draw. Overall,
Ballyboro’s team came 3rd with Manager/Mentors & Trainer very proud of
their achievements on the day, a great bunch of girls who put in a great team
effort throughout. Team: Natasha Hegarty, Jillian Banahan, Isobel Farrell,
Olivia Lisle, Marie Kelly, Aoife Mc Loughlin, Áine Halpin, Hannah Shea, Sarah
Scally & Ellen Irwin. In addition, we would like to thank the great support

Go-Games Blitz: St. Faithleachs GAA Club Grounds were the height of activity on
Saturday last as the U10 Go-Games Blitz took part with 26 Teams competing. Many
thanks to all who helped out on the day & to Claire, Mairéad & Martina
for their help in the running of the shop.

Thank You
The
Rathcline Ladies committee would like to thank everyone that supported their
Table Quiz in the Peer Inn on Saturday night last. It was a resounding success

Friends of Asthma
The
Friends of Asthma Charity shop would be delighted to receive any donations of
fancy dress costumes ready for the Halloween celebrations. Donations of
clothing, linen, toys, bric-a-brac are also welcome during shop opening hours
Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm.
Monster Bingo
A
Monster Bingo session will take place on Sunday next 2nd October in
Newtownforbes GAA Centre. There will be a total of €2,500 in prize money. The
Bingo will start at 3pm.
Lough Ree AC
It
befell on the local Lough Ree AC to host the final race of the 5k series which
was organised by the County Roscommon Athletics Board. Roscommon town, Boyle,
Taughmaconnell having already staged the event on previous Wednesday evenings.
The
club would like to think that the last race was the best. To substantiate that
claim they have to start by thanking a number of people starting with the local
Gardaí, whose involvement was essential. Following that a word of appreciation
to Dr. Niall Walsh and Dr. David Harrison who provided medical cover as well as
Evelyn Rooney and Joe Mullooly who carried a defibrillator. Indeed David took
part and finished a creditable 31st from an entry of 117. Johnny
Kilcoyne 7th and Martin Gillen 11th were an ‘eye-opener’
and first of the Lanesboro Triathlon squad to finish.
The
10 ladies and stewards, too many to mention, but they know who they are, as lo
deserve gratitude as does the photographer who had quite a busy evening. Last,
but certainly not least, a sincere thank you to Rathcline GAA club for putting
their fine premises at the disposal of the club. Indeed, several of the
visitors commented on the exceptional facilities at Clonbonny during the cup of
tea afterwards, as Lanesboro was the only venue to offer refreshments to the
athletes.
The
club’s training run continues at Clonbonny on Tuesday evenings at 5.15pm and it
is great to see an increase in numbers as each week passes. This in turn throws
up a surprise or two. Tuesday 20th Cronan Flood brought in the
fastest time yet when he recorded a time of 8min 44sec. Isabella Farrell did
likewise for the girls with a time of 9.23. The only other youngster to beat
the 10min mark was Eanna Donoghue 9.48 while Lucy Ann Myhill was the second
girl home on time.
The
biggest improvement came from Orla Ryan followed by Leah Wyse. The biggest
surprise was the diminutive Ava Gettings bringing in a better time than Tanya
Farrell and Hayley Rooney.
