Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
Death
The time leading up to Christmas in the Ballyleague Lanesboro area was brought to a shuddering halt when the news broke of the death of one of the area’s most popular ladies Maureen Kyne, Ballyleague on Thursday 23rd December. The grief the news brought was deeply felt throughout the local communities and further afield. Maureen was a woman of the community who worked tirelessly as a teacher in Ballyleague National School until her retirement and then with the local Ballyleague Renewal group. She had within her a great desire to seeing her Ballyleague Lanesboro community prosper and grow. She touched the hearts of everyone that knew her and her passing leaves many an empty heart but a mind full of happy memories. As I can attest she was a tremendous friend and wonderful support. Maureen, a very proud native of Curraghroe, was a tremendous mother and she brought that motherliness to her students in Ballyleague and this was clearly evident by the number of past pupils that turned out to bid their fond farewell to her. The attendance at her residence on St. Stephen’s Day and again on Monday 27th at the removal of her remains to the Church of the Holy Rosary for her funeral Mass and burial to Cloontuskert cemetery bore testimony to the esteem in which she was held. To her husband Bernie, sons Enda, Declan, Jarlath and Oliver, sisters Philomena and Irene relatives and many friends we extend our most heartfelt sympathy.
Birth
Many congratulations to Sean and Phil Mc Dermott, Lisnacusha, on the recent birth of a baby girl.

Good luck to the Scór na nÓg sketch team who take part in the Leinster semi-final in Ballymore, Co. Westmeath on Sunday next.

Last Chance to be in for €3000
The closing date for the Rathcline GAA club Christmas Draw is coming fast upon us. The club urge your full support for the draw as it is a major source of income especially going into the start of the new football season where affiliation and insurance have to be met. Your support will help ease this burden and help the club continue to develop their magnificent new clubhouse and pitch in Clonbonny. The club is also working on a new training area which will further enhance the facilities in Clonbonny. The club is the pride of the Rathcline community and it is only through your great support the present facilities are there for all the members. I urge your support for the draw on this Saturday night 8th January. Tickets can be bought in O’Brien’s or from any club executive. The first prize is €3,000 and there are a further nine prizes to be won. Be supportive of your club.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family and extended family of Vincent Elliot formerly of Moher, who died recently in Dublin.
Card Game
Card game will commence on Sunday 16th January in St. Faithleach’s Clubhouse, Ballyleague and the first game will start at 9pm sharp. All monies, less expenses, will be given out in prizes. All card players are invited and will be very welcome.
The card committee would like to thank St. Faithleach’s GAA club for the use of their premises and wish them well on the playing field over the coming year.
Sunday 6th February will see a Monster Game take place in St. Mary’s hall Lanesboro where there will be €1,000 in prize money to be won.

Community Games
It would be great to see people with tutoring talents in any of the following disciplines to help out with the Community Games committee in Lanesboro. People now seem to have some time on their hands and it would be wonderful if they could share their undoubted talents with the young of the parish in preparation for the County Finals of the Community Games. Ballyleague Village Renewal: The Tidy Towns committee would like to extend deepest sympathy to the family of the late Maureen Kyne, Ballyleague. Maureen was a loyal and devoted member of our committee for many years – having served as secretary in the most recent past. Her efficient note taking and attention to detail was a hallmark of her work as proven by our minute book. She will be sadly missed by her family, friends and the people of Ballyleague. May she rest in peace.

New Year of Whist Drive
Lanesboro Social services commence a new year of Whist Drives in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on Friday night next 7th January at 8.30pm. The committee would like to thank everybody for the tremendous generosity over the past year and wish everybody a year full of health, happiness and prosperity. The committee looks forward to welcoming you to the Whist Drive on Friday and as usual a great night of card playing assured.
Lough Ree AC
The year 2011 started with the annual Fun Run from the track to the Parish Hall, in conjunction with the annual MS Run from Newtowncashel, both postponed from Christmas Day.
Congratulations to Sinead Farrell who was the first home on the Cashel Run. Sinead’s first entry to running is well remembered. As a 5 or 6 year old, she took part in the under 8, 60m in the Community Games, the Rathcline kid continued on to do a lap of the track where she came upon the start of the under 10 sprint where she proceeded to join in that race and finished that race too.
Postponed events are never as good as the original fixture. So it was with the Fun Run, where Rachael Costello was the first finish. As it happens, all were winners as Santa Claus had left goodies for all competitors. Maybe contacting people by text is not as reliable as we think. Sorry about that!
While in the business of congratulating past athletes, lets extend it to Rosemary Masterson who was selected to represent the Irish Army in a forthcoming international in Germany. This is not her first time to be honoured by the Irish army, but it is the first time the club gave her credit for her achievements. The Lanesboro girl runs for Tullamore Harriers and is also an active and executive member of the Lanesboro Triathlon club.
Church Gate Collection
The Disabled Drivers of Longford Ltd is holding a Church gate collection on next Saturday and Sunday 8th and 9th January at St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro. Your usual generous support will be much appreciated.
