Seventeen teams from Ballyleague and surrounding areas took part in what was an entertaining event hosted by quizmaster Dermot Cox. Congratulations to Table 3 (Denise Donovan, Saoirse Donovan, Goretti Kenny and Diarmuid Farrell) who were the outright winners following a tie-break over table 10 (Leo Sweeney, Gerry Trimble, Ronan Cullen and Donal Casey) Prizes for the quiz were graciously sponsored by Gleeson’s Townhouse Restaurant Roscommon and by Lanesboro / Ballyleague Credit Union.
The organising committee would like to extend a huge thank you to all who attended to support the quiz and to St. Faithleach’s for the use of the clubhouse. Many local people also generously donated prizes for the raffle and these included Keane’s Super Valu, Maura and Jimmy Hudson, The Lifebelt Bar, Terry Mc Loughlin Butcher, Ray’s Lakeview Service Station, Maureen and John Gibbons, Coyle’s Filling Station, Doreen and Seamus Oates, Margaret Gillen Hairstylist, and St. Faithleach’s GAA. To the parents who gave of their time to clean the grounds and the inside of the building, to the businesses and residents of the town and Green area’s for having their business/home looking so wonderful for the visit. To John L Farrell and the Fas workers who did great work on the grounds area for the visit. To our committee for all their hard work, to our staff for being so well prepared for the visit. To everyone one of you that have helped us to achieve and become what we are today. To the guests on the day, families and the children themselves for helping to make the morning one to remember.
Lough Ree Athletic Club
Sky Valley Rovers Sports Complex in south Roscommon was the venue for the Connaught club cross-country championships (uneven age groups). This involved U11, U13 etc. to novice men and women.
The good news was that the venue was reasonably convenient. The bad news was that only 2 athletes turned up. Disappointing, Yes! Particularly as the club put a fair amount of effort onto promoting the sport in Longford and Roscommon Primary Schools, with a fair amount of success. With football every weekend it is difficult to get two days between September and December for the club to compete in competitions. The fact that €50 was wasted in entry fees is very disappointing and will have to be made up for at the Annual Church Gate Collection.
What about the time, effort and recording put in by the athletes and club coaches over the past two months? Why has it been wasted by non-appearance at competition?
Emily Mc Carthy was the sole competitor in the U11 Girls event. With no team to support her, the brave Emily did well to finish in the mid-fifties and this commendable as she was giving away a year. Her brother, David, took part in the U13 Boys event and he finished in 36th place. This was a good result for David considering the race was 2500m and a hill thrown in for good measure.
Hero of the day must be Mary Sloane, Longford AC who finished 4th in the Girls U13. This was a class effort over a tough course. Indeed, her younger sister improved as well, finishing 27th in the U11 race. Mary has earned herself a place on the Connaught U13 squad for the forthcoming interprovincial.
Now that the club has nobody going to the All Irelands, the next outing for our young athletes will be the ‘Fun Run’ on Christmas morning. The run is in conjunction with the MS run from Newtowncashel to Lanesboro which is celebrating 20 years this year.

Tickets becoming very limited for Dublin Gospel Choir
There has been a huge amount of interested at the news of the arrival of the Dublin Gospel Choir to perform in The Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague on Friday 26th November. Particularly at this time of year there is a huge demand of the Choir and it is a major coup for St. Faithleach’s GAA Club. Dublin Gospel Choir who has played with some of the best acts in the world including Rod Stewart, Chris de Burgh, John Legend, James Brown, Damien Rice, and The Chieftains has become one of the most sought after acts in the country. The tickets priced at €20 are very limited in supply and it is very important to book yours early to avoid disappointment – and there is no doubt but this will be a definite sell-out. Tickets are on sale from any club member or from O’Brien’s Corner Shop, phone 3321107.
Wedding
The wedding took place recently at St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro of Louise Fayne, daughter of paddy and Anne Fayne, Bantry House, Cullentra and Gerard Smyth, Cullentra Newtowncashel. Bestman was Colin Fayne, brother of the bride and groomsman was John Smyth brother of the groom. The pageboys were Connor Fayne, nephew of the bride and Gary Carberry nephew of the groom. Flower girl was Hazel O’Brien.
The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Mickie Murtagh, Belfast, assisted by Fr. John Quinn, Fr. Phonsie Cullinan, uncle of the bride, Fr. Mickie Reilly, and Fr. Gerry Brady, Newtowncashel. The marriage mass server was Cathal Flynn nephew of the groom.
We wish the happy couple many years of wedded bliss.
Person of the Year Award
Congratulations to Teresa Costello who has been shortlisted on the awards list for this years ‘Rehab Person of the Year’. We wish Teresa the very best of luck on awards night and hope that all people in the area have supported her nomination.
It is that time of Year Again
Now is the time to be thinking of Christmas Day, a day that traditionally gets off to a wonderful start with the annual Christmas Day Run/Walk in aid of Multiple Sclerosis. The run/walk takes place between Newtowncashel and Lanesboro with the walkers setting off at 11.45am and the runners at 12.15pm.
This run is usually hugely supported by both runners and sponsors of the runners and we expect that this year will be no different. This is the main fundraiser of the year and once again we expect you will be very generous for those people that need all the support that is available. So far the MS Society has raised over €145,000 in its previous 19 years of the Run/Walk. As this is the 20th year of the Run/Walk the organisers are hoping for greater numbers to make the 20th Anniversary a very special occasion. With almost 8 weeks to go to Christmas Day, there is ample time to get training and support the very special occasion.
Sponsorship cards are available from O’Brien’s Corner Shop, Michael Flood, Newtowncashel (Tel: 086-0880855); Brigid Mullooly, Lanesborough (Tel: 086-8807596) and from Casserley’s Shop and Fallon Bar Newtowncashel.
Lanesboro Triathlon Club News
Luckily the very recent severe weather abated a bit on Saturday last allowing one of the toughest Adventure Races on the 2010 calendar to take place. The Sea 2 Summit in Westport was just that, a 5k run to cycle to Croagh Patrick , run up and down the Reek, cycle back to Westport , another 5 k incorporating some assault course obstacles and running in the sea and then on to the finish. Yet another race that seemed like a good idea at the time when Niall O’Donoghue and Colm Daly signed up to it at the after race party in Achill Roar Adventure where they had a stormer and finished 60th and 61st of a huge field and broke 2 hours in the process . Their enthusiasm to do another adventure race was very apparent and may have been the catalyst to have another Club member, Sean Farrell sign up for the event also, but this was not going to be an easy day.
With nearly 600 competitors from all types of backgrounds, adventure racers, cyclist, triathletes, runners, fell runners and a plethora of nervous first timers, all bunched together in the courtyard of the Westport Plaza Hotel the gun went at 9.15 am. In the drizzly, cold rain the entire field took off through the street of Westport for the first 5k. In no time the steep hills of the town were taking their toll as the run worked its way around the town to finish out at the end of the harbour where the bike transition was. Sean and Niall and Colm settled into the run and Sean began to work his way up through the field. The cycle was intense but far shorter that what the lads are used to in triathlon and in their training so they were barely warmed up when they got to the base of the Reek. This is where the race changed for everybody. The greatest respect has to be given to those who do this climb on Reek Sunday in July every year and some in bare feet. To watch 600 athletes scramble over it in competition is also awesome with the elites running up and downhill which can be better described as controlled falling. Everyone else seemed to be in pain, calves, quads and lower backs were the most common areas screaming for respite but all just soldiered on and encouraged each other.
Arriving back to the second bike park from the mountain put a different slant on the rest of the race for most people. The Reek had sapped everyone energy and now it was just about finishing and to keep going. Those elite athletes however must feel no pain as they continued to blaze trails back to the finish. Sean Farrell’s superb fitness background had now elevated him to this category and his teammates counted him down off the mountain in about 5th place, as they were making their way up. Sean continued to maintain his position and although he too suffered on the last leg which included the sea and obstacles, finished a brilliant 8th place overall. This was Sean’s first ever Adventure race and has only one triathlon to his credit so far having only taken up the sport at the end of the summer. Niall and Colm never let up either despite finding the second half of the race very taxing with Niall crossed the line in 49th place and Colm in 87th. These were very good results for the trio and for Sean particularly.
Swimming is continuing every Monday night from 9 pm – 10pm until Christmas in Roscommon Swimming Pool and the Run Training session for all standards will commence this Thursday at 7 pm at the Running Track at the rear of Lanesboro Community College. Walkers, Joggers, Beginners everyone is welcome.

Ballyboro
U13: Ballyboro V Gaels United. Final Score 4-3 On Saturday last we played our last game in the first phase of the league at home to Gaels Utd. Boro started well and had most of the play but then a bad offside decision gifted Gaels the opening goal. Boro were unsettled by this and a few badly timed tackles resulted in them giving away a penalty in 20th minute which Gaels scored giving them a 2-0 lead. Eran Farrell brought off some top-class saves in goal for Boro and his quick kick outs helped put pressure on Gaels defence and they were rewarded when Shane Phillips chipped the on-rushing keeper after been put through by Kevin Sorohan. Boro’s luck didn’t change in the 2nd half when after only a few minutes Boro defender Conor Smith headed into his own net when attempting to clear from a Gaels corner. Gaels added a fourth after 10 minutes when Boro failed to clear their lines. Boro brought on Jordon Donlon for Smith and he wasted no time in getting Boro’s second when he finished off a great move involving Sorohan and Cox in Midfield. Boro now had all of the play and again were unlucky when Hussey’s corner came off the crossbar. Boro kept the pressure on and it was no surprise when Johnny Hussey scored Boro’s third and now it was backs to the wall for Gaels and Boro threw everything at them with Gannon and Guinan pushing forward on the right and Sorohan and Cox pulling the strings in midfield, but it wasn’t to be and Gaels held on to win 4-3 on the day. This was a great team display and the result didn’t do them justice, there were several candidates for Man of the Match but Kevin Sorohan just shaded it with his fine passing for all Boro’s goals.
St. Faithleach’s GAA
Minor Ladies Division 3 Final: Pride of the Parish this week goes to our Minor Ladies on winning the 2010 Minor Division 3 Title when they defeated St. Dominick’s on Saturday last in Ballyleague. Final Score: St. Faithleachs 5-2 St. Dominick’s 3-7. Team: Gillian Corcoran, Claire Brennan, Róisin Collier, Claire Cleary, Aoife Kenny, Shanice Carthy, Aishling Ormsby, Joan Geoghegan, Kelly Murphy(0-1), Sarah Brennan, Laura Mc Loone(Cpt)(1-1), Aileen Nerney, Shauna O’Neill(2-0), Emma Kenny(1-0), Rebecca Hanly(1-0) Subs: Nicole Carty, Bronagh Donlon, Áine Collier. Faithleach’s opened the scoring with a goal from Rebecca Hanly & a point from Laura Mc Loone before St. Dominick’s hit back to lead by 4 points at half-time. Faithleachs got off to a cracking start from throw-in of the 2nd half where Kelly Murphy passed to Laura Mc Loone who sent in a high-ball that was caught by Emma Kenny who turned to score a great goal. A point from Kelly Murphy & a goal from Shauna O’Neill brought Faithleachs in the lead with 10 minutes to go. The game could have gone either way as both teams fought hard for victory; Dominick’s Niamh Watson netted a goal for her side before Shauna O’Neill hit back with another for the Faithleachs side. Laura Mc Loone was also on target to secure another cracking Faithleachs goal. Dominick’s secured 2 further points before the final whistle as Faithleachs held on to win the Title. This was a fantastic Team Performance from the St. Faithleachs side & Huge Congratulations to all Players on the Panel along with their Manager/Mentors, Denis Mc Loone, Claire Kenny and Lorraine Connor.
