Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes 26th July’10

Lanesboro – Ballyleague Notes

Death

It is with the greatest of sadness that I record the death on Tuesday last 20th at Galway Clinic of Mrs Bridie Deffew, Rathcline Road. Bridie was predeceased 15 years ago by her husband Noel and if ever a couple left an indelible mark on their adopted town it was the Deffew family. Bridie was left at the time of Noels death with four young children and if the standard of raising children was ever set by one person then Bridie was the standard bearer. She was a true mother in every sense of the word. She was an affable lady whose manner warmed the hearts of everybody that had the good fortune to know her. She was an excellent friend and neighbour whose departure will leave a great void in all our hearts and minds. Her remains reposed at her residence until Friday when she was removed to St. Mary’s church for her Requiem Mass. Bridie’s remains was given a guard of honour by the Whist  Club members and friends. Following mass she was laid to rest in Clonbonny cemetery. Deepest sympathy is extended to her sons Nevan and Fran daughters Eilish and Sorcha, brothers and sisters’ relatives and many friends.

Championship time

This coming week will be fever pitched with excitement and trepidation at it is crunch time for Championship contenders. At the time of writing there are no confirmed dates but the Rathcline team will take on Drumlish most likely on bank Holiday Monday as they bid to stay in the Longford senior championship.  Roscommon, Connaught senior football champions have been drawn to play Cork in the All Ireland quarter final.  We wish The Rathcline team and Stephen Ormsby, Martin Reynolds, Darragh Hussey and the Roscommon team every success over the weekend and look forward to both teams continue their winning march.

Broadband arrives in Town

After many false dawns it is great to be able to announce that Eircom broadband will finally arrive in Lanesboro within the next two weeks. I was informed during the past week that the arrival is imminent and that Eircom can now be contacted to book and arrange delivery of broadband packages to your home and business.

25.5 Triathlon Series

The inaugural 25.5 triathlon series that took place on Saturday 10th July in conjunction with the Lough Ree Summer School was an outstanding success. In total there were 116 entrants and it was a tremendous sight to see happening in our town.  A word of commendation to the organisers for a well marshalled and excellently prepared event.

The day was a little overcast but perfect for the competitors and the sight of all the 116 entrants starting their swim was indeed wondrous. They started from the north side of the bridge at the entrance to the harbour and swim under the bridge and swam to the harbour behind the car park where they transferred to their bikes where they cycled to Scramogue cross and back again to where they started on their bikes and then the run started up through the newly constructed walkway through the woods emerging between Clancy’s and Casey’s houses on the Rathcline Road where they veered right towards Rathcline crossroads and back down the Rathcline road to the Corner and down Main street to the finishing line.

It was a tough task for all the contestants but more so for the local entrants who were undertaking a triathlon for the very first time. For the record the triathlon was won by John Reidy from Athlone Triathlon. The first local man to finish was Barry Mc Dermott, Barnacor and the first local lady to finish was Ronie Masterson, Curraghrua. From what I can gather the following locals also competed in the triathlon Sean Farrell, Joe Masterson Jnr, Keith Murphy, Gareth Johnston, Brian Mc Cormack, Niall O’Donohue, P.J. O’Neill, Johnny Kilcoyne, Mark Kenny, Peter Clancy, Eimear Casey, Brendan O’Sullivan, Colm Daly, Brendan Doyle, Matt Harte and Mike Frank O’Grady. If I have left anybody out please tell me and I will include them in next week’s notes.
