Mindless Vandalism

Under the cloak of darkness on Wednesday night Thursday morning last some mindless vandals with spray paint sprayed the names of people on the Clonbonny bridge wall and the wall leading to the graveyard. This vandalism does not need any comment other to say that those that did this foul act should be named to the local Gardai. A great effort has been made in recent times by the local FAS group to clean and maintain this area and to have such a deed done truly beggars belief.  At a time that the community is coming together to help clean up the town it is very disappointing that members of our community should work in such a manner against the very positive work being done. Please, if you know anything at all, contact the Gardai immediately.

Family Day

Sunday next 27th June the minor club will celebrate Lá na gClub with a Family Day, Barbeque and Sports Day in the club grounds in Clonbonny. It promises to be a great day of sports with events for all taking place. The club has a special pride of place for the massive family involvement that continues to be forthcoming from all families in our parish and the events on Sunday is the clubs acknowledgement of the support. We would like to invite and welcome every parent, family and child in the parish to the club grounds on that day and we would like to extend a very special welcome to anybody that may have recently moved into the parish or as of yet not got involved in the club.

We are for you and the development of your boy/girl and we hope you can join us for what should be a tremendous day. We ask you to be in the club grounds around 12.45 for a 1pm start.

Work for our Youth Scheme working well

The community project organised by the Shannon Gaels Minor club is proving to be a tremendous success and the club is extremely grateful to everybody that, so far, has given work to the members of the club. So far we have had lads and lassies footing turf, loading and throwing in turf, helping with silage, with the moving of grass and many other chores that needed to be done.

Again we ask that if you have work to be done and need some help in doing this work the Shannon Gaels Minor club has members ready and willing to do their bit. If you need help please contact any of the following Jimmy Flood, Seadna Ryan, Brendan Keane, Sean Kenny or Joe O’Brien (0862460840).

Powerboating for Lanesboro/Ballyleague

The growing water sport of Powerboat racing will be making its first appearance in Lanesboro on Sunday next. For anybody that witnessed the massive display in Galway over the June Bank Holiday weekend will be equally amazed by the display that will take place on the Shannon next Sunday. The racing will commence at 12 noon and continue to 5 and viewing places will be at a premium and you are advised to arrive early. The racing will take place in the bay area and viewing areas are from below the car park on the Lanesboro side and from the point right around to the waterways Mariana on the Ballyleague side.

The Irish Sailing Association covers many aspects of water sports and water leisure and also develops and administers a range of training and other services to support both members and all those involved in sailing and boating of all types, which currently includes: Dinghy sailing, Sail cruiser sailing, Motor cruiser sailing, Motor cruising (Inland Waterways), Power boating, Windsurfing and Personal watercraft.

All we hope for is that this wonderful spell of weather continues and that all spectators can enjoy in comfort and safety the spectacle of the powerboats.

Lough Ree AC

The University Sports Grounds in Galway was the venue on Saturday last for the second day of the Connaught Athletic Championships for the Under 13 groups and upwards. The club was well represented but found the competition tough and only failed to turn up.

Enda Berga came out of retirement to retain her javelin title, others were not so lucky! Shane Kenny repeated last year’s performances with silver in the Hammer and bronze in the High Jump. “New kids on the block” Lisa Nolan, Discus U/14 and Alana Donlon Javelin U/13 had bronze medals to show for their day. Both girls are products of Cloontagh School.

We are led to believe that fourth place entitle one to compete in the national Final. In that case we must acknowledge fine performances from Anna Peters U/13 Shot, Grace Brennan U/14 Shot, Laura Peters U/13 200mand Owen Sorohan U/16 100m and they will get another day out for their efforts.

Congratulations to all the athletes who took part in the Community Games County Finals on Sunday. As we go to press the full results of the day were not available. Suffice to say, that this scribes “Star of the Day” was wee Tamara Lee from Killashee in the last event of the day – the Girls walking Race.
