Death

The area was shocked and saddened by the news of the death on Thursday last 10th June at Tallaght hospital of Tom Kearns, Rathcline House. Tom, his wife Maureen and family moved to Lanesboro from England almost 30 years ago and in that time became a prominent member of the local community. He was a man of energetic spirit who was always seeking a new project. Tom’s work was in the building business where he and his brothers rans a very successful construction business in England before his return to his native soil and arrival in Lanesboro. Tom, a native of Ballyconnelly, Co. Galway continued his interest in the construction business where he developed many businesses and was also a leading farmer. His remains reposed at his residence prior to the removal to St. Mary’s church Lanesboro on Saturday and his burial took place to Rathcline cemetery following his requiem Mass on Sunday. The attendance at both his removal and burial bore ample testimony to the esteem in which he was held. To his wife Maureen, son Tommy, daughters Karen and Claire brothers and sisters we extend our sincere sympathy.

Help is a two-way thing

The community project organised by the Shannon Gaels Minor club is proving to be a tremendous success and the club is extremely grateful to everybody that, so far, has given work to the members of the club. So far we have had lads and lassies footing turf, loading and throwing in turf, helping with silage, with the moving of grass and many other chores that needed to be done.

Again we ask that if you have work to be done and need some help in doing this work the Shannon Gaels Minor club has members ready and willing to do their bit. If you need help please contact any of the following Jimmy Flood, Seadna Ryan, Brendan Keane, Sean Kenny or Joe O’Brien (0862460840).

Lough Ree AC

The younger brigade travelled to Galway on Saturday last for the under 9 to under 12 Connaught T&F championships. This resulted in ‘crossing swords’ with the big clubs the likes of G.C.H., Claregalway, Westport, Ballina, Carrick, Sligo and many others. At times we were out of our depth but with 1gold and 7 silver medals it was not always the case. This made the journey worthwhile.

With some excellent performances it is difficult to know where to start. In the past, we had nothing but praise for the Killoe kids (boys) then the diminutive Emily Mc Carthy arrived on the scene. The way she won the under 10 500m created great excitement – a win we were never expecting. Staying with this age group, Orla Keane was equally impressive when winning her heat and final of the under 10 60m. In fact Orla was the only girl in her age group to break 11seconds for the sprint. When she teamed up with Emily they won the silver medal.

Silver medals also came the way of the Newtowncashel pair Seoige Mulvihill and Áine Bannon in the under 11 Ball throw.

While Seoige had the second best throw of the competition it was Áine’s improvement that assured the pair of well deserved silver medals. Indeed our second string of Zoe Mc Dermott & Sarah Hoare finished in 4th position.

The under 12 competition was run as an individual rather than a team event. The club had not foreseen Owen Murray as a medallist at this level but he rose to the occasion and was runner up in the under 12 shot and captured the silver medal. The delight on his face spoke for us all.

The girl’s event was equally exciting with indoor medallist Larissa Noone taking part. Yes, Larissa retained her silver medal only to be beaten by Orla Duffy who took gold. The Cloontagh lass only came to light at the recent inter-schools competition.  The club were pleased to have 1st and 2nd in the Connaught under 12 shot.

Everybody is now looking forward to the National Finals in Templemore in July.

As we have not official results to hand, we cannot judge on individual performances only to say that under 9’s Cait Kelly and Cian Glennon caught our attention, as did Sarah Scally who won her heat of the 600m under 11. If she was paired with Zoe we could have had another great result. More about that when we see the result sheets.

We hope that the many parents that travelled enjoyed the day as much as the rest of us. Next weekend the under 13 and upward will be in action again in Galway as well as the Co. Longford Community Games. We wish all athletes the best of success.
