There are numerous odd jobs i.e. lawns to be mowed, turf to be footed etc. to be done and the young club members are prepared to do any jobs asked of them. If you need anyone for job contact Jimmy Flood, Sean Kenny, Seadna Ryan, Brendan Keane or Joe O’Brien.
Kellogg’s can help – The minor club have just registered for the Kellogg’s challenge and with your help they may be in for the fantastic first prize of €100,000 toward a pitch makeover. In order to be eligible the club need to collect 500 tokens from Kellogg’s Cornflakes, Crunchy Nut and Crunch Nut Feast boxes as the main criteria for entering. We ask the entire parish to save these tokens for us and make our entry a great parish contribution. There is a box left in O’Brien’s shop and you can deposit your tokens there.

Sad times in the Parish of Kilgefin
Over the past 10 days the parish of Kilgefin has suffered greatly with sad bereavements.
On Friday 30th April we were saddened to learn of the death at University College Hospital, Galway, of Jack Mc Conway. He was predeceased some years back by his wife Anne. Jack a native of Derry City – a fiercely proud man of his roots – came to work in the local power station with ESB. Jack was a quiet amiable man whose quiets and gentle nature endeared him to everybody that came to know him. Jack was a very man who could be seen making his daily walks throughout the locality. He was also a keen and excellent golfer and a leading member of Lough Ree Golfing Society and Roscommon Golf Club. He will be fondly remembered and may he rest in peace. His remains were removed to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague from Smyth’s Funeral Home on Sunday and following his Funeral Mass on Monday burial took place to Cloontuskert Cemetery. To his daughters Jackie and Annette, sons Charlie, John and Brian, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.
Also on Friday 30th April we learned of the death at Roscommon county Hospital of Peter Gill, Cloonadra. Pete as he was more commonly known had been in failing health for a period. He was from one of the oldest and most respected families in the parish. He worked until his retirement in the power station with ESB. He was a man of great wit in his inimitable way and was keen follower of all sports none more so than greyhounds and horse where he was regularly seen at both Longford Greyhound and Roscommon race tracks. Pete has a wonderful spirit and outlook on life and his passing will leave a great void. His remains were removed from Farrell’s Funeral Home on Sunday to the Church of the Holy Rosary Ballyleague. Following his requiem Mass on Monday he was laid to rest in Cloontuskert cemetery. To his relatives and many friend were extend our heartfelt sympathy.
The entire area was shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death at her residence on Monday last 3rd May of Ann Trimble, Kilrooskey. Ann was a vibrant and outgoing lady. Her beaming smile and warmness of greeting always endeared her to everybody that had the pleasure to know her. She was a great neighbour and friend to all in the area where her passing will leave a great sadness. The attendance at both the removal of her remains from Smyth’s Funeral Home to St. Mary’s Church Ballagh on Thursday and again at her Funeral Mass bore ample testimony to the esteem in which she was held. Following her Funeral Mass her rains were removed to Mount Jerome Crematorium, Dublin. To her husband Harry, sons Gordon and Ivor, daughter Hazel, brothers, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.
On Saturday morning we awoke to the tragic news of the death of Ronan Mc Cormack following a car accident. Ronan (26), a member of the defence forces in Athlone, was a warm and friendly young man who had the world at his feet and his loss will be sadly missed by the multitude whose lives this young man brought his beaming smile and warmth to. To his family and extended families we would like to extend our deepest sympathy.
Night at the Dogs
Cloontuskert National school invites all the communities of Ballyleague and Lanesboro to a ‘night at the dogs’ at Longford Greyhound Track on Friday 21st May at 8pm. Tickets are priced €10 each and your support will be much appreciated.
There is nothing better than a community night at the dogs where locals and friends enjoy the thrill of a night at the dogs.
Congratulations
to all the boys and girls from Ballyleague, Cloontuskert and Ballagh schools who made their First Holy Communion over the past two weekends and good luck to all the young people of the Kilgefin parish who receive their Confirmation next weekend.
Do you know who it is?
I just received this email from the playschool on the Green.
‘Someone has been in the fenced off playground area at the back of the school on a number of occasions. They have left cigarette butts and allowed their dog/s to use the area as a toilet. Last Wednesday, 28th April when we came into school we noticed that someone had been in and
around the play area again. This time they had thrown sand all over the windows at the back of the school and scattered and broke some of the small sand toys and bits of sticks all around the playground area’.
Do you know who this is? If you do can you ask them to take their dog/s elsewhere for their exercise? This area should in no way be entered or contaminated especially when young children are using this area on a daily basis. This behaviour is totally irresponsible and those involved should cease their wrongful ways immediately. I hope that the people in the vicinity will also keep a firm eye on anybody entering the school area and help in eradicating this behaviour immediately.
The Gardaí have been informed and hopefully, from here on in, it will not be something that they will have to act on.
Ballyboro FC
Ballyboro Lions V Erne Valley Rovers. Final Score 6-2.
Boro completed a magnificent season by becoming the U8 Champions in Abbeycartron last week. Although clear winners in the end, the scoreline does not reflect the closeness of the game. After an even opening, Cian O’Brien struck for the Lions with a beauty into the top left-hand corner of the net. The lead only lasted minutes when Erne Valley equalised after a shot went through a ruck of players and crept into the net. Boro responded and it was top scorer, Liam Ormsby who pounced to finish a great move involving Michael Dunne, James Browne & Evan Chalmers. It was all Boro at this stage & Ormsby scored again on the stroke of half-time with a left foot curler. Half-time scoreline, Ballyboro 3 Erne Valley 1. The second-half started at a frantic pace and Erne Valley made it 3-2 after 5 minutes. It was game on now and the next goal would be crucial. Boro defended well, Dylan Donlon in goals was rock solid with Dunne & Nathan McGovern giving nothing away. Orla Costello & Jennifer combined to send Cian O’Brien away and he finished with aplomb. 4-2 to Boro with James Browne commanding mid-field ably assisted by O’Brien. It was Boro who took further control. Liam Ormsby completed his fourth hat-trick of the season with a fine finish after McGovern & Costello combined. In the last minute James Browne completed the scoring after being slipped through by Brennan. The final whistle brought jubilant scenes as Ballyboro completed the season as Champions without losing a single game this is a fantastic achievement. And a credit to all involved. Well done to all the players who were deserving winners. Ballyboro Squad – Dylan Donlon, Michael Dunne, Nathan McGovern, Cian O’Brien, James Browne, Liam Ormsby, Jennifer Brennan, Evan Chalmers, Orla Costello. Congratulations to Liam Ormsby who was the winner of the overall Under 8 Player of the Season Award from the LDSSL.
