Great turnout for Spring Clean

Twenty local residents turned out for the first two major Spring clean-ups in the village of Ballyleague over the last ten days. It was an exceptional turn-out and great work was done – especially in the new marina. Thanks to Detta, Mary, Ciara, Anna, Margret, Mary, Pauline, Fr. Larney, John Francis, Alan, Hughie, Jimmy, Ciaran, Denis, Frank, Gerry, J.P. and Tom for making the effort. The 3rd big event is taking place THIS Wednesday evening May 5th at 7.30pm. Painters are especially required so if you have a paint brush please come along to the new Waterways Ireland marina behind the Sliabh Ban. All local residents and business owners are invited to send a representative to help out with members of the Ballyleague Village Renewal Committee. It is hoped to improve the appearance of the village before the Tidy Towns judges arrive in June. Thank You to everyone who came along and helped last week. It would be appreciated if all residents in Ballyleague would help out to clean the public footpath outside their own homes in the next seven days.

Lough Ree AC

The annual sportsday organised by the Lough Ree Athletic Club for the Primary Schools of the area attracted huge numbers at the track on Thursday last. The following schools took part: Fermoyle, Newtowncashel, Ballyleague, Cloontagh, Gaelscoil and Stonepark. Gaelscoil and Stonepark certainly increased the numbers but it would have been nice to see the same from schools nearer to home.

It was gratifying seeing a nice distribution of medals with all schools with all schools getting a share. The full results are not to hand at the moment but outstanding performances came from Maeve Dervin, Newtowncashel, who literally ran away with the 400m for 3rd/4th class girls.

Kevin Sorohan, Fermoyle, and Gerard Flynn, Stonepark, recorded doubles while Sarah Scally, Ballyleague, and Orla Duffy, Cloontagh, collected three medals from four events.

The weather helped to mark the day enjoyable, one wonders what would happened if it rained! It makes a case for a small stand/shelter on the Ballymahon side of the track.

Thanks to the Community college for their co-operation, the teachers and parents who helped and last but by no means least the children the children who took part. A special word to Kevin Sorohan who won a national award during the past week.

The parishes of Rathcline and Kilgefin are holding their Community Games finals this coming weekend and the club hopes that they are well supported.

Lough Ree Golfing Society

We had a lovely outing on Saturday, May 1st to the exquisite parkland course of New Forest, near Tyrellespass, Co Westmeath. Most of us were able to play over 12 holes in brilliant sunshine but a few heavy showers of rain made some of the back nine more challenging!

The course is a credit to the owners and course committee; the fairways and greens are among the best one would find anywhere.

Nearest the pin was on the ninth,–an unusual hole within an old walled garden –this prize was sponsored by our Captain, Brendan Whitty and won by Patsy Fallon.

First with 34 points (17 on back nine) was Frank Conmy, 2nd was won by Tommy Reilly also on 34 points(14 on back nine), 3rd with 32 points(18 on back nine) was Liam Rosemond. The front nine was won by Tom Nohilly with 18 points and the back nine was won by Brendan Whitty also with 18 points. The Captain of New Forest very generously donated four green fees to the society for a prize at one of our next outings. Many thanks to all for a wonderful day.

Our outing was, however, tinged with sadness as our past captain and founding member, Jack Mc Conway, passed away on Friday, RIP. Jack was a regular player with the society, a lovely gentleman, good company, always pleasant, kind and thoughtful.

We remembered Jack at our presentation, and many reminisced on his various outings with us. Thanks to the members who attended the guard of honour at Ballyleague church on Sunday evening. Farewell, Jack and may hosts of angels take you to the fairways of Heaven.

The Captain, committee and all members of Lough Ree Golfing Society would like to extend deepest sympathy to Jack’s family. May he rest in peace.

The Ulster Bank will once again be in St. Mary’s parish Hall on this Friday  from 10am to 3pm.
