The club would like to recognize the gratitude of their many sponsors and donors that contributed so generously over the past two years. They recognise the trying and testing times that each and every business is presently going through and they have made a conscious decision not to seek sponsorship for this year’s production. The club asks each and every club member and supporter to support all the local businesses that have been so magnanimous and welcoming to the club during the previous two years. While they will not be seeking sponsorship the club will accept donations from anybody or business that feel they are in a position to make the donation.

Death

It was with great sadness we learned of the death on Sunday last 10th January at Roscommon County Hospital of one of the original residents of the Green Mrs. Kathleen Gilmore, 62 The Green. Kathleen had been predeceased some years back by her late husband John. They came with their family to live on the Green while John took up employment with Bord na Mona. She was a strong and hard working lady who reared a wonderful family of 12 children. In the time of harvesting and footing sod turf Kathleen was to be seen working shoulder to shoulder with her children supplementing the family income. Kathleen had been in failing health for a short while and the loving care shown by her family mirrored the love she showed her family throughout their  years. The attendance at her removal from Farrell’s Funeral Home on Monday last and again at her Funeral Mass and burial to Clonbonny Cemetery  bore testimony to the esteem herself and her family was held. To her sons Brendan, Enda, James, Tony, Nicholas, Damian and Cosmos, daughters Theresa, Ann, Collette, Caroline, and Lorraine, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Search for a Star

Rehearsing has begun by the 18 acts that go to make up this year’s Search for a Star. The Shannon Gaels Minor Club has been overwhelmed with the numbers interested in taking part in this year’s production. Individuals from throughout four parishes are taking part so much so that there are more than 120 people involved in the rehearsing. Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st February promises to be even bigger and better than previous years, the entertainment will be of the highest calibre and it is a night not to be missed. There are representatives from many communities and groups within the area and the prospects of the Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club sailing into the production with their contribution should add hugely to the night.

The price of the tickets remains at the same price as the previous years and the €10 will be money very well spent. It is very important to note that that admission will strictly be by ticket only and absolutely no money will be taken at the door. Tickets are now on sale and can be bought by calling into Martina or Bridgie O’Brien, phone 043 33 21107 or email Joe at joea@iol.ie

Death

It was with great sadness we learned of the death on Thursday 14th January at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Longford, of Theresa Donlon, Lisreevagh. Tessie as she was more commonly known was from one of the oldest and most respected families in the parish had been in failing health of late. Tessie and her husband Peter met while in America where they married and spent over 20 years before returning home some 40 odd years ago. Tessie was a thorough lady whose warm and welcoming smile endeared her to all that had the pleasure to know her. Her passing leaves a void in the hearts and minds of everyone that knew her. The attendance at her removal from her residence on Friday last from her residence to St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro and again at her Requiem mass was both large and representative. To her husband Peter, son Peter, sister Josie Horohoe, Salmons Lane, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Vandalism

It is with sadness that I report of the recent vandalism to the Waterways Ireland Marina at Ballyleague.

This facility that is freely available to all in our community had escaped the attention of vandals for the most part up to now.

In the last few days a person or persons seemed to take pleasure in breaking all the light stands on one of the pontoons. They also tampered with some of the boats who were wintering there.

What a waste of energy and a loss of sanctuary at our Marina. Let’s hope it’s a one off.

Thoughts

Peak Oil is a term used to describe a point from where the production of hydrocarbon i.e. oil will start to decline as resources become exhausted. Some experts claim that we have already reached this level and others say that we are close to it. In addition to this, the demand for oil and oil based product is increasing globally. The rapid development of China’s economy, for example, has meant a massive and increasing demand for oil.

Oil production will decline and become more expensive as sources that were once uneconomical to exploit become more attractive. At present vast areas of forest and agricultural land are being destroyed in the pursuit of oil in countries as far apart as Ecuador and Indonesia. This is usually at the expense of the livelihood, health and often lives of the indigenous people.

We in Ireland import all our oil. Were something to happen to cut off or reduce our supply we would be in serious difficulty.

Each of us should take a serious look at our oil consumption, be it in transport or heating or in industry to see where we can bring about a reduction. The less used, the less pollution, the less money spent and you would be helping our environment, the economy and doing your bit for climate change. Every effort, no matter how small it appears to be, makes a difference.

These thoughts were prompted by the far seeing and excellent plans being forward for the Green residents. This community was always far seeing and this proposed development shows that they are a community that think deeply about their and the country’s situation. May they be fully rewarded for this tremendous initiative.
