Lanesboro Notes

Mindlessness vandalism of a few

Over the last weekend the mindlessness of a few caused lot of damage in the vicinity of the bridge. It is very saddening to hear that this vandalism is happening in an area that is been developed to its maximum with the intention of attracting visitors and it is more disappointing that this mindlessness is being done by young people from our area. Have these young people nothing better to do than to go down under the bridge drinking? Again I ask! Where they get the drink as most of these young people are underage? The mindlessness commenced with the breaking of one of the main windows in St. Mary’s Parish Hall. On the same evening Joe Kelly had a window broken in his house. After the expense of putting lights along the pathway on the banks of the Shannon we see one of these lights broken, during the tidying and development of the duck pond area some stuff was left to be taken away when some thought it would be great to set fire to it, which they did and the fire brigade had to be called to put the fire out. The temporary traffic lights erected due to the updating of the local sewage pipe laying on the bridge were unceremoniously thrown off the bridge.

It grieves me greatly that I have to report these incidents, it is alien to our community and it is something that we as a community should neither have to endure or accept. We must assist the Gardaí in the search for these culprits and if anybody has any information about any of the above acts of criminality could they contact the local Gardaí immediately. This mindlessness must be stopped and stopped immediately.

Lanesboro Badminton Club

Junior Badminton for National School children Aged 8 years + has just commenced and will take place every Saturday in Lanesboro Parish Hall from 6-7pm. This is a great outlet for the young national School pupils from the entire area and it would be great if parents encouraged their young people to come to the hall every Saturday for some great fun playing badminton.
Community Games AGM

The Community Games competitions has been hugely successful over the years in Lanesboro and the parish has been very successful with many of our residents having great memories of their day at the local finals, the county finals or even the finals in Mosney. It is a tradition that must be carried on to our young people and it was very disappointing to learn that the scheduled AGM, last week, had to be cancelled due to the lack of numbers.

The AGM has been rescheduled to Tuesday next 10th November in St. Mary’s Parish Hall at 9pm and the people of the parish are asked to turn out and attend and offer their support for something that give so much fun to the young of the parish. This meeting is open to everyone that has an interest in Community and not just for parents. Please mark this date on your calendar and ensure that we have a committee to continue the great tradition of Community Games in Lanesboro.

Riverside Chorus

This call is to parents who know their young people are capable of singing. There is a new and dynamic youth choir being formed in the area and if your young person likes singing then this is the place for them to be. Riverside Chorus will sing everything from Bach to the Beatles and it promises to be a wonderful experience for those lucky young people. This is a new venture in Lanesboro area and it is something that has been badly needed in the area. Please contact Edel Loftus and she will have further information, phone 086-8399835.

Death

We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to the Greally family, Lisreevagh, on the recent death of Mrs. Margaret Murtagh, Derryhaun.

Scόr na nÓg

The wonderful and excellent GAA Scόr na nÓg County Longford semi final will take place in St. Mary’s Parish Hall Lanesboro on Saturday 21st November. Traditionally this is an exceptional display of wonderful talents that are in the clubs of the county and our club is no exception with a good number of our minor club members taking part. We hope for large number of Rathcline people will come along and enjoy the night and support our club representatives.

Croagh Patrick climb nearing

With the Rathcline GAA club sponsored climb of the famous Croagh Patrick taking place on Saturday week everyone is encouraged to support the gallant climbers. A percentage of the amount sponsored will go to Longford Hospice and I urge all supporters to be a generous as possible to ensure a goodly amount going to very worthwhile causes.

It is worth ones while to pay a visit to the pitch and clubhouse in Clonbonny to see where their funding is going. The pitch has just recently been seeded and it will be a tremendous spectacle once there is a green sward of grass and the goalposts are back in place. The work being done in Clonbonny is tremendous and it is a facility that the Rathcline club and people of the parish, both home and away, will be rightly proud of. If you can help in anyway please do, the club is still actively seeking climbers as the more that do the ‘Reek’ the greater the sport and the more memories. Your support either in sponsorship or by climbing the ‘Reek’ will be greatly appreciated. Sponsorship cards are available in O’Brien’s or from Ciaran Donlon or Alan Fayne. Please be generous.

Ballyboro Youth Soccer

U8: Ballyboro Tigers V Melview. Final Score 0-3.
The Tigers went down despite putting up their best show of the season so far. This match could have gone either-way and was 0-0 well into the 2nd half. Although they had a lot of possession they could not turn it into goals. 3 late goals from Melview secured Melview’s win. The Tigers had outstanding performances from Brien Casey, Ronan Banahan, Jacob Kajan & Bryn Peters.
Ballyboro Lions V Camlin. Final Score 7-1.
The Lions had a good win in Longford on Saturday last. This was a much improved performance from their 1st game with the whole team performing very well. A hat-trick from Liam Ormsby & a brace each from James Browne & Cian O’Brien did the damage. Others to impress were Dylan Donlon in gaol, Nathan McGovern & Michael Dunne in defence & the hard work of Orla Costello & Jennifer Brennan.
