Yes! It’s back again and the search for new acts and participants for the upcoming Shannon Gaels ‘Search for a Star’ has commenced. Last year a large number intimated that they would love to do it again and their opportunity is now here. New people will also be sought and welcomed to what is a great parish effort. The end result is a wonderful show with many a friendship being renewed and new ones forged. Last year in total 95 took to the stage representing the many acts and the challenge is to better last year’s outstanding show.

A meeting will take place in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on Monday night 2nd November at 9pm and the club would like to invite last year’s crew along with anybody that will be interested in taking part in this show. The show will take place in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st February 2010.

Suicide Awareness and Prevention

Suicide continues to be a major issue throughout the country and takes the lives of many fine people, for one particular reason or another, every year. The numbers each year are dramatically high and this has brought much heartbreak to homes and families throughout the country and indeed in this region. We are all aware of families that have suffered due to suicide. The devastation it brings to families is agonizing.

Suicide awareness is a major contributor to the prevention of a suicide and with the current high statistics in the number of suicides it is incumbent on us all to make ourselves available to learn more of suicide awareness and how we may be able through the training be in a position to help stop somebody from committing suicide.

The Roscommon Lions Club under the current Presidency of local man Ciarán Mullooly has organised a Cheltenham preview for the past number of years with the aim of raising funds to put a programme of Suicide Awareness and Prevention Course together to help people in the area to learn about and help in the awareness and prevention of suicide. All your support of the Cheltenham night has paid off when the Lions Club announced that they will be hosting their first ASIST, suicide awareness and prevention course, of the autumn at the Quad Youth Centre on the Circular Road, entrance opposite Chinese Restaurant, on Saturday 31st and Sunday 1st November from 9am to 5pm. If you would like to attend or know who would really benefit from this excellent course can you please inform Mary O’Sullivan at 091-548360 of your intention to attend. Your help may save a life.

Get Well Wishes

At present a number of our people from the area are sick or recovering from operations and or treatments. We wish them God’s strength to overcome their medical condition and remind them and their families that they are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Harvest Festival

The Carrickedmond Harvest Festival proved to be a huge success with a large crowd enjoying the offerings of the day. It was very lovely to see a good crowd from the area attending and supporting such a worthy cause. The Carrickedmond Harvest Festival committee are to be commended for their tremendous work in raising €10,000 and proceeds were equally distributed between the 4 midland sub aqua clubs. This is a most generous contribution by the committee and the sub aqua clubs can further develop the great work they do year in year out.

There is a new and dynamic youth choir being formed in the area and if your young person likes singing then this is the place for them to be. Riverside Chorus will sing everything from Bach to the Beatles and it promises to be a wonderful experience for those lucky young people. This is a new venture in Lanesboro area and it is something that has been badly needed in the area. Please contact Edel Loftus and she will have further information, phone 086-8399835.

The launch of the Shannon Tones CD on Sunday night last in Adie Farrell’s was truly the night of the year in the area. A massive crowd turned up for the launch with the artists singing the songs that will now be making them famous. The proceeds of the CD will go to two very worthy causes namely MS Ireland and Parkinsons Ireland. The local artists and their songs are Michael Coffey – Little Arrows, Seamus Flynn – Leitrim Home, Gerard Farrell – Bang on the Ear, Tracy Docherty (nee Coffey) – Love Me, Steve Ormsby – Gypsy Ho and Me, Joe Ginty – The Contender, Catherine Mc Neilis (nee O’Sullivan) – I saw the Light, Liam Connerton – Walk Tall, John Coffey – Little ol’ Wine Drinker Me, Johnny Malone – Coward of the County, Tommy Donoghue – The Answer to Everything, Fergie Feeney – He Stopped Loving her Today and Jimmy Hussey – Blowing in the Wind.

Lough Ree Athletic Club

Primary Schools: The Connaught Cross-Country championships for Primary schools were held at Hazelwood GAA grounds, Co. Sligo, on Saturday last. What a day! According to Fabian Walsh “In a lifetime of going to outdoor events from athletics to football to ploughing and all in between, never have I encountered the conditions that existed in Sligo”. That says something about what faced the young runners from the area. Heavy rain, strong winds and shocking underfoot conditions made it a day for the fireside, so every credit is due to everyone that took part.

One could make a case for the postponement of the event. Against all that there was a huge crowd in attendance and most of them would not be coming back for another day, if another day was available.

Results are skimpy as they were the last thing on the mind. There were no complaints from the young athletes. One of the boys made the remark that he was surprised by all the commotion at the start only to be told that that was the reason he was there. 3rd/4th class girls were first in to action after the walking race. In the early stages Larissa Noone was faring well with Rebecca Stavus not far behind and they finished in that order. Apart from Aisling Casey all the Lanesboro girls will be eligible next year. Rosemary Masterson who represented the club and school with distinction in her time and now does some senior running on a regular basis had her daughter running on the day and  it is for sure that she never had to contend with the conditions her daughter Lauran Tansey had to endure.

As the attention was been given to the “little heroes” the boys race passed without great notice of results. But the conditions of their singlets showed the wear of young men who gave their all.

Man years ago there was a film called the Magnificent Seven but this week the “Magnificent Eleven” that turned out and ran so well must be recognised for their efforts and they were Larissa Noone and Dominic O’Reilly both Ballyleague NS, Aisling Casey, Patryega Jedrych, Orla Costello, Rebecca Stavus and Lauren Tansey, Lanesboro NS and Owen Murray, Cillian Flood, Cronan Flood and Daniel Curran all Fermoyle. Ye will not be forgotten! A word must also be given to the parents that travelled on a day to remember.

Killoe NS: Congratulations to Eamon Keogh who was 6th in the 3rd/4th class 800 meters. With a team score of 84 they must surely be in contention for a team award. Brian Harte was 11th in 5th/6th class 1500m. Well done lads.

Congratulations also to Rachael Gilligan Aughnagarron NS who was 13th in the girls 3rd/4th class event and also Mary Sloan Melview NS who was placed 13th in the 5th/6th class event. Well done girls.
