Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Groundbreaking plans for The Green

For some time now the upgrade of the footpaths and sewage for The Green has been a burning issue with the Green residents and following recent meetings it seems that the work so badly needed will now finally get the go ahead.

At a recent meeting of all the interested parties, proposals were put forward for the work and funding. They were very well received with a work schedule to be drawn up in the very near future.

The proposal for the development included the infrastructure for both broadband and District Heating. The broadband infrastructure is very vital as the area has been shortlisted for broadband in the near future by Eircom and it would set the Green up for been connected the instant broadband comes to town.

The second proposal shows extraordinary foresight by the group as the proposal would set the Green apart not only in Lanesboro by in the country. The inclusion of infrastructure for District Heating would be a first for any estate or town in the country and will prepare the Green community for the future which will bring District Heating to Lanesboro. Energy conservation is a priority and with these developments taking place The Green will be in prime position to attain energy conservation and be a leader in the country.

District Heating has been hugely successful throughout the world and it will bring a new form of heating to any community that can embrace this energy saving method.

Lanesboro has been an energy town since the early fifties and it is supremely well located for the introduction of District Heating. Not alone can District Heating bring huge benefits to Lanesboro but it can also re-energise our community as a leading energy town into the future and secure futures for our young people.

One has to congratulate the amazing work of the committee that has put forward these proposals and it is very important that the whole community and indeed surrounding communities support and encourage this project. The Green can be the future not only for us but for the country as a whole.

Harvest Thanksgiving

The annual Harvest Thanksgiving Service will take place in St. John’s Church Lanesboro on Sunday next 11th October at 4pm.  The special preacher for the Service will be Canon Lidwell from the Cavan group of Parishes. The community would like to invite everybody to go along and join and praise God in song and prayer for the gifts of the harvest.

The following Sunday 18th October also at 4 p.m. in St Coman’s Church Roscommon Harvest Service will take place and again everybody is invited..

Ballyleague NS

Ballyleague NS entered teams in the Co. Roscommon Primary Schools cross-county championship last week. This is an annual event to encourage youngsters to take part in outdoor activities and be physically active. The venue was the racecourse in Roscommon where up to 500 competitors took part in four events, although schools from the north of the county were thin on the ground.

The Ballyleague School can be well pleased with their performance. While they did not figure in the team medals they had some fine individual performances which qualified those to compete at the Connaught Primary School finals in Sligo on Monday 19th October.

Pride of place must go to the 3rd/4th class girls where Larisa Noone and Sarah Scally finished 6th and 7th respectively. This was a colossal performance from the lasses when once considers that there was over 100 entrants in the 800m event.

The boys in the 5th/6th class 1000m were equally impressive. Dominic O’Reilly 11th was first of the team home, closely followed in 13th place by Mickie Cox. Great placings from this pair who had to contend with Cornafulla and Creagh National Schools which are backboned by St. Ronan’s and Ballinasloe athletic clubs. Jack Irwin 35th and Cian Donoghoe 37th cannot be overlooked for finishing in the top half of the race.

Let us not forget Cian’s brother Éanna who finished 13th in the 800m 3rd/4th class event. The result speaks for itself. Finally congratulations to all who took part and their teacher for making Thursday such an enjoyable occasion.

The under fourteen team and management finished their season with a very enjoyable blitz in Clonbonny on Saturday last. The club would like to compliment the management team of Neil Donohue, Sean Lisle and all the players for their great season and we look foward to next year. The blitz was a great success and thanks goes to the management team and Michelle Lisle and Jacqui Rooney and to Padraic Farrell and Brendan Rhatigan for refereeing the games and everybody that turned out to support. The first final was between the the Stephen Tobin captained team of Eoin Sorohan Sean Costello, Sean Casey, Laura Peters, Niamh Shea and Andrea Carter overcame the challenge of the Andrew Ward captained team of Shane Kenny, Jack Rooney, Lauren Guinan, Elanor Lisle, Emily Brennan and Dearbhail Flood. In the second final the Carol Cooney captained team of Kieran Lisle, Niall Keane, Mikela Cox, Jo Sweeney, Eugene Maguire and Andrew Rhatigan beat the Oisin O’Sullivan captained team of Gary Gallagher, Sharon Rooney, Garth O’Reilly, Shannon Rooney, Connell Kennelly and Danielle Irwin. A feature of both winning teams was that they were both managed by our underage ladies Linda Kilcoyne and Tara Leigh Lulham. Well done girls and also well done to all players.

The Junior Championship visited the two parish primary schools on Monday. Thanks very much to the team captain PJ O Neill for taking the time to visit the schools. The future of the club and future successes on the field will all start in the primary schools.year.

Preparations for Scor have begun and five disciplines will be entered this year. This is great progress as the club had never entered the competition up to a few years ago.

A winter indoor under 8 league has commenced on Monday and will continue for six weeks.

Lough Ree Athletic Club

The Racecourse, Roscommon was the venue for the County Club Championships which took place on Sunday last. As there is only four clubs affiliated to the Roscommon Co. Board the event is destined to be a low key affair. Still it is an ideal oppertunity for introducing children to middle-distant running, rather than the Connaught Championship where the numbers are greater and the standard higher.

While there was over thirty training on Tuesday evening last at Clonbonny it was not possible to field a team of four in any group in Roscommon.

Bryn Peters was the only entrant in the Boys U9 event which he won convincinly.

In the U9 Girls the consistent Orla Keane won again followed by Lucy Ann Myhill second, and Orla Costello in fourth place. Roscommon AC won  the team event. If the club had even a girl to run a poor fourth they would have been in the medals.

In the Girls U10 Nadine Mc Carthy and Patryeza did not make the first three and pacing themselves in middle distant running is a skill the girls will have to conquer.

The Boys U10 was a different kettle of fish, here Eanna O’Donohoe was first with Cronan Flood  in second place. There was a similar result in the U11 Boys where the winner was Owen Murray and Cillian Flood in second place.

The U12 age group seen Niall Keane taking third place while Sarah Farrell was fourth her twin sister Tanya in seventh place and Anna Peters in eight place in the U12 Girls. Sarah finished ahead of A. Hanly Roscommon AC who was 6th in the county Schools. Sarah has indeed  improved!!

Moving to the U13 age group newcomer Dominic O’Reilly was best while in the same age group the girls had a 1, 2, 3 with Rachael Costello in first, Aoife Mc Gann in second and Dearbhail Fllod in 3rd place. Rachael was a convincing winner despite the fact that may not be her best event.

Laura Peters was first in the Girls U14  and last but not least Shane Kenny was second in the U14 Boys and Oisin O’Sullivan in third place.

Well done to all that took part.

With the Connaught championships coming up, even age in Ballinamore and uneven ages  in Tuam, the club will have to give serious consideration to entering teams that may or may not turn up. Roscommon AC have sections to their club (1) Fun Runners and (2) Serious Athletes!!!!
