All-Ireland Junior Final
Sunday next will be a red lettered day in the annals of Longford Ladies GAA when the county team will contest the All-Ireland Junior Final in Croke Park at 11.45am. Longford will play Antrim. They have already defeated Antrim in the League section when they travelled to Belfast and had a great victory there. We are hoping for a repeat performance from the ladies and to welcome home the All-Ireland trophy to the county on Sunday night. Rathcline will be represented on the playing side by Ann Duffy who is just returning from injury, Dara Mc Gann who is part of the management team. It is a wonderful achievement for our own Madaleine Murray who is in her second year as County Chairperson and it is a fitting reward for her tireless work. We wish the Ladies and their management every success on Sunday.
Monster Festival Meeting
The Lough Ree Monster Group is actively seeking more people to get involved in the committee. We have a few specialities needed to be worked upon and if you feel you have expertise that would be suitable to the running of a festival then we would love to have you at our meeting on Thursday night in the Yacht Bar at 9pm. The Monster Festival involves the organising and running of the festival, the staging of a play, the ability to apply for funding, the ability to source sponsorship, actors, street performers, artists and people with a mind as to what we should have as part of our festival. We appreciate your view and your support and we want to make the Lough Ree Monster Festival something that we will be very proud of and that we can beat the records set by the festival back in 1992
Big Event of the Year
Within the next 3 weeks’ visitors from all over the world will be in Lanesborough and Ballyleague for two major events that will put the town on the map for years to come.
The World Predator Boat Fishing championships will take place here from October 5th to the 10th with 200 anglers from 16 European countries here and then we have a spectacular line up of celebrity chefs and food producers for the Taste of the Lakelands Food Festival on Friday October 7th and Saturday October 8th when 2000 visitors are expected in the food show in the marquee behind the parish hall.
There’s a real buzz already around the town about these events with some anglers from Poland, UK, Hungary and Russian visiting the town to prepare for the fishing this week.
On Wednesday night of this week September 21st, the organisers of both events will stage a special community launch night in St Mary’s hall with all local residents, representatives of all local community groups and the traders and business owners of the town invited to come along.
The idea is to give everyone a full rundown on every single detail of the festival in October – letting them know when everything is on, where it is and what to expect. A special invitation will be issued to everyone in the community to get involved in the festival by helping to decorate our town, bring colourful bunting and international flags onto the streets at their homes and shops and put on a very special Céad Mile Fáilte for all our visitors from home and abroad.
Special details will be given on Wednesday night of two very important events. The International festival will actually open with a great ‘Mardi Gras’ style family festival parade through the streets of the town on Thursday October 6th at 6pm when the International anglers will hold their own parade of nations behind their international flags and will be accompanied by local school children, community groups, the Castlerea street entertainment giant figures and the emergency services. This will be a spectacular family parade. We are now asking all local schools to try and prepare a special little ‘float’ with a small number of their students to take part – bringing colour, designs, masks, fancy dress and the flags of the nations into the streets. We will also launch details next week of a very special Friday night feature on Friday October 7th at 8pm when the ICA ladies of Lanesborough and Longford will do battle in a special celebrity cook-off with their Roscommon counterparts in the marquee.
So please come along on this Wednesday night September 21st to St Mary’s hall beside the bridge for our launch and don’t say you were not invited. It should be a great night – ahead of a great few weeks here.

Bord na Móna Public Information Sessions
Bord na Móna intend to hold a second series of pre-planning Public Information sessions regarding its proposed Derryadd Wind Farm.
In order for members of the public to be informed about the proposed development, Bord na Móna has arranged four Public Information sessions, as follows:

Food and Fishing Festival Launch
After months of hard work and preparation, the Taste of the Lakelands Food Festival and World Predator Boat Fishing Championships are only around the corner. Within a very short time we will be joined by hundreds of guests from all over the world – with anglers from 17 countries and some of the best food producers and chefs in Ireland.
On Wednesday night next September 21st at 8.30pm, we will unveil the Official Festival Programme with all the key days and dates and times for our fishing and food events from October 5th to October 10th. We will also speak to some of the key figures within the festival – our anglers, chefs, producers and visitors.
We will be joined at the Gala Community Launch in St Mary’s Hall beside the bridge in Lanesborough by some very special guests – including Longford’s outstanding Rose of Tralee for 2016 Caroline Doyle and we are taking this opportunity to invite YOU and your family along.
Our launch will start at 8.30pm in the hall on Wednesday night and everyone present will get their own free brochure.
We also have a few surprises in store. Refreshments will be served with a taste of the Lakelands so please come along and join us for what should be an entertaining and informative event.

Mothers and Others for Croke Park
St. Faithleach’s GAA club three years ago formed the Gaelic 4 Mothers and Others initiative. It attracted ladies from both sides of the bridge and it has proven to be an outstanding success with the ladies having many great occasions and trips away.
They really hit the jackpot this year when they were selected to play at half-time of the Senior Ladies All-Ireland in Croke Park on Sunday next. This will be a fabulous day for our local ladies and the honour of playing on the Croke Park is truly fantastic anthd a faraway thought three years ago.
There is great support for the ladies from both sides of the bridge. If you are interested in joining up, you can contact any of the ladies on both sides of the bridge and they will make you very welcome.
Traders and others Meeting
A meeting of the newly formed group that involves the traders of the community as well as all other people wishing to see a development in the community will take place in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on this Thursday 22nd September at 8pm sharp.
Set Dancing Classes
Classes have commenced on Tuesday 20th September in St. Faithleach’s GAA club house at 8pm. Classes are suitable for beginners and you don’t need a partner. Go along and get fit while having fun.

Sean Nos Dancing Classes
Classes for children has just commenced on Tuesdays at 4.15 pm in The Hill in Newtowncashel. Under 6 years; 4.30—5.00. 6—9 years; 5.00-5.30. 9—12 years; 5.30—6.00

Longford Intermediate Final
On Sunday afternoon next our two neighbouring parishes, Killashee and Cashel, will take to the Pearse Park sod striving for Championship glory. It is the second year in a row for Killashee to be in the final and like last year the team are manged by local Ballyleague man Raymond Curley. It is a tremendous achievement for Ray and his management team getting back to their second final in a row. We are looking forward to an absolutely cracking final and we wish all the very best of luck.

Flute and Whistle Classes
Flute and Whistle classes have commenced in the Quad Youth Centre, Roscommon, every Tuesday. There will also be classes in Kilbride Community Centre, Fourmilehouse, for concertina, flute and whistle. One to One classes are also available. Contact John Wynne 087-2239095.

Lough Ree Monster 4 mile and 10k Race
A date for your diary and only 3 weeks away. The Lough Ree Monster group will hold a 10k and 4-mile Road race on Sunday 2nd October in Lanesboro. The group looks forward to all runners and their running club members and friends taking part. We would appreciate that the word will be spread far and wide and that it really be a monster turnout.
50/50
On Monday 12th September last the 50/50 draw took place in the Yacht Bar. When the envelopes were counted there was €406 for the owner of the first envelope drawn. The lucky envelope belonged to Breda O’Loughlin, Lough Ree Park. The blue envelopes are on sale locally at local shops and from club members and they cost only €2 each. Alternatively, you can opt for the pink envelope for €100 and that has you in the draw for 52 weeks. Your support is greatly appreciated and it is great to see that the jackpot is hovering over the €400 mark over the past few weeks and club is deeply appreciative of your continued support.

The new season of Bridge began on Wednesday night last 14th September in St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Lanesboro. Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club
Now that the dust has settled on the club holiday things can get back to normal.
The club diver tests take place in Achill on October 1St. Any other diver wishing to go to Achill contact Michéal Farrell. Best of luck to Herbert and Gerry on the day.
The trip to Portugal proved interesting and challenging. Six excellent dives were recorded by most divers and although the water temperature was lower than expected unusual currents saw most dives in the 50-minute range. Definitely a place to revisit.
It’s that time of year again when we head back to the pool for the winter season. The Try-A-Dive sessions will start soon and continue for a number of weeks. Watch this space for or keep an eye out for the posters which will be going up soon. So if you ever fancied diving or snorkelling now is your chance. All Equipment supplied.
Rathcline GAA
Well done to senior player Shane Casserley, Clonfower, on winning the 2 All-Ireland final tickets for Sunday last. The club would like to sincerely thank everyone that bought lines in the draw.
The luck of the replay means that there will be another draw taking place for 2 Premium tickets for the replay on Saturday 1st October.
The 50/50 draw for a prize of €406 took place in Adie’s on Monday night 12th September and the lucky winner was Breda O’Loughlin, Lough Ree Park.
Congratulations to Denis Connerton on being ratified a county senior football manager for the next 2 years. We wish Denis and his team management the very best of luck for the year ahead.

Pride of place this week must go to the Shannon Gaels U12 team who won the Division 3 Plate final on Saturday last in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park when they defeated a very fancied Northern Gaels. The Rathcline Ladies would like to wish the Longford Ladies Junior team the very best of luck in the All-Ireland Final in Croke Park on Sunday next 25th September. The game is the first of a three game programme and hopefully Longford will make a winning start to the day. The game throws in at 11.45 and it is a wonderful opportunity to go to Croke Park. The Clubs would like to wish the St. Faithleach’s Mothers and Others team the very best of luck. They will be playing at half time of the senior final and it is a wonderful achievement for the local ladies to be playing in Croke Park on All-Ireland Final day.
