Defibrillator Training
Have you signed up for the defibrillator training yet? It is very important as many as possible get trained in the use of the defibrillator and it is also important that those due for recertification also sign up for recertification.
The defibrillator group under Kevin Madden will soon be holding a new training course and a re-cert course. We urge as many people from as many groups as possible to sign up for the course as we never know the time or the hour that your lifesaving skills with the defibrillator will be required. What with all the different events and festivals coming along the more people trained and recertified in the use of the defibrillator the better. Play in the Hall
On Saturday night next 16th April Rathcline GAA along with Halfsolid productions present a family -friendly GAA themed comedy play in St. Mary’s Hall Lanesboro. Anywhere “The Pull” has played the sold out signs have gone up well in advance of the night. This is a play not to be missed as it is the most hilarious play that will have come to Lanesboro in a very long time. As the Clonmel Nationalist reported “Hilarious comedy pulls in the crowds”

Magnificent response by everyone
The Hand in Hand fundraiser held on Good Friday was a tremendous success and it is a great credit to everyone that contributed in any way toward the success of the day. If you had not the opportunity to contribute towards the day you can do so on their website www.handinhand.ie or to Sinead Hogan. The amount raised on the day was an incredible €6561.57.

The Green – A living History
In No 50 we had a member of the first band on the Green Mick Cahalan from county Tipperary and his wife, and their son Patrick. There were also lodgers in this house Tony Hourican and Paddy Sullivan. The next resident I have was Jim Burke and I have no further details. The Burkes were followed by Richie and Geraldine (Gerry) and their family, son Peter, daughters Maud, Aideen and Olivia. The next family into 50 was Des and Breege Mc Dermott and their children Barry and Edel, and then Val Fallon. The house was then bought by Ian Gearty and the new owner and resident in Mick Treacy originally from Athlone.
Visitors
Last weekend Barney Carberry, originally from Cloontuskert and presently home for a break from Canada brought a resident of old to the shop – Harry Hennessy and his wife Frances, mentioned a few weeks back on ‘The Green History’ and whose name brought back memories to so many people. I have a photo album that I will be publishing photographs from of the 50th Anniversary Pageant held in the Convent Hall and other musicals and as it happens Harry, himself was a part all in the album. I am sure that the pictures will bring back many memories for so many people. The photographs will be on this site and also on the Facebook page O’Brien’s Corner House.

Jack Harte’s Play for Longford
Language of the Mute is the debut play for local man Jack Harte and it got widespread acclaim when it was staged in Dublin. The play is a strong and commanding portrayal of how unscrupulous people use their charm to shatter lives. This is a hugely powerful play and it is one that must not be missed under any circumstances. Be prepared to be moved, this is a compelling play. Tickets are priced at €16 or €14 for senior students and students.

Be involved in the Lough Ree Monster Festival
Come along and be part of a growing number involving themselves in the Lough Ree Monster Festival. There are many proposals and suggestions being made to the group and we would love to hear your thoughts and vies in making the Festival to best thing ever to hit not only the community but the entire general area. The festival is starting to take shape and the group would love to have new faces and fresh ideas to those already being debated. The next meeting will take place on this Wednesday 13th April in Sorohan’s Lifebelt bar at 9pm.

Table Quiz
Three young ladies from the area are taking part in the World Karate Championship that takes place this year in City West in June. There will be a Table Quiz to help defray the costs in the Swan Tavern on this Friday night 15th April at 9pm. You are asked to gather a team, spread the word and make it a great night in Adie’s. A table of 4 costs €40 and we urge you full support of the three local ladies.

The 50/50 draw took place Monday night last 5th April in Clarke’s Bar and the winner of the draw was Tom Hogan, Ballygar. Tom was the lucky winner of rising jackpot of €443. As you may have noticed the weekly prizemoney in the rise and club encourages greater support as they hope in the very near future to have the prize weekly at €500 and more. It is down to your support and club is deeply grateful to everyone that continues to support the draw weekly. The next draw takes place on Monday 11th April in the Yacht Bar.

Paddywagon
The mention of the name Paddy Wagon brings to mind the green tour busses we see crossing the country with tourists. To another generation the name Paddywagon brings a musical band to mind. It was only the other week that Peadar Collins asked me if I had seen that week’s Ireland’s Own. In the ‘Mineral bar’ section that remembers the Dancehall Days the featured band was none other than Paddywagon.
What make it so noteworthy for us was that the lead singer who doubled on bass guitar was local lady Patsy Fayne. Patsy is a sister of Jackie Maxwell and Sean Fayne, Thureen. Patsy is now a long time resident of the state of California.
The band’s debut single was Ghost of Molly Maguire in 1972 and they hit the jackpot when their follow up release ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ topped the Irish singles chart on 29th April propelling the band into the limelight.
The Ireland’s Own described the band as follows “Paddywagon was never an ordinary showband. They dressed sometimes as convicts, sometimes as farmers. Hugh Mc Gettigan was a wonderful M.C. and comedian and their parties were like big parties”. Irishshowbands.net described them as “A 1960’s version of The Pogues! Three Mc Gettigan brothers, Hugh, Colm and Maurice from Carndonagh, County Donegal formed the nucleus with bassist/vocalist Patsy Fayne from Lanesboro who had been with The Exciters. The Exciters were a Roscommon band all past pupils of the CBS.

Mammoth Canoe for Charity
We have often heard the tune, made famous by Finbar Furey, The Lonesome Boatman, well we will soon have our own version only that it will be the Lonesome Canoe man when local man Junior Hannon will undertake the mammoth canoe from the bridge all the way to Limerick City commencing on Friday 27th May. Junior is about to fulfil a burning ambition when he will undertake the mammoth canoe from Lanesboro to Limerick Junior all in the great cause of raising funds for the Irish Cancer Society. This huge paddle deserves everyone’s support and sponsorship cards are available locally and in O’Brien’s and I encourage everyone to contribute towards a wonderful cause. Let’s give Junior some great support for this huge undertaking for the Irish Cancer Society.
Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club
More than 30 divers took to the water in Lanesboro on Sunday last for a Search and Rescue Course. Athlone, Roscommon, Longford, Mullingar, Banagher and our own club participated. This is a compulsory course for divers to be involved in search and rescue.
In the debrief session afterwards suggestions were put forward on how to improve the exercise and these will be put into practice in the coming months. Another session is being organised for September. Well done to the organisers.
All members are asked to support an upcoming quiz in The Chestnut Tree in aid of the Harvest Festival. More details next week.

Pilgrimage to Lourdes
The Ardagh and Clonmacnois Pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place from Friday 27th May to Wednesday 1st June. The Pilgrimage will be under the leadership of Most Rev. Francis Duffy, Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois. The Pilgrimage director is Monsignor Bernard Noonan and the special section for the Sick is dealt with by Rev. Michael Scanlon. Pike Angling Club
On Sunday last 10th April the Lanesboro Pike Angling club held the annual pike fishing competition for the Michael Casey Perpetual Trophy on a wicked cold day to be on the Shannon. There was a modest turnout with only 6 boats and 11 people fishing even the fishing was modest as even the fish did not come out. 1st prize of the trophy and €125 was won by Damian Gleeson with a fish weighing 4lb. 2nd prize €100 was won by Tommie Knightly with a fish weighing 3lb14oz. 3rd prize of €80 went to Eithne Clyne with a fish weighing 3lb12oz. €50 and 4th prize was won by PJ Cunningham with a fish 2lb14oz. 5th prize €30 was won by Brian Tabiner. Louis Rhatigan was the winner of the smallest fish caught on the day 1lb 3oz and for that he won €25.
At the presentation there was a draw for non-fishing club members with the main prize of a 40” Toshiba Smart TV going to Teresa Finnegan, The Green. The three cash prizes of €50 each went to John Hegarty, Terry Hutchinson and PJ Donnellan.
The committee would like to thank the anglers that turned out in such harsh conditions and the club looks forward to seeing you all at the next outing. The club would also like to thank Gerard Farrell, Swan Tavern, for his hospitality on the day
Rathcline GAA
Firstly, let us say how unlucky our senior were when going down to Clonguish on Friday night in Newtownforbes. This was an excellent performance by a very young and inexperienced team but there is no doubting the ability of the lads and when the mistakes are limited to minimal the team will no doubt shoot up the Leader Cup league table. Ability far outweighs experience and we have a young side laden down with ability.
The seniors will play Abbeylara in Clonbonny on this Wednesday night at 7.15pm and we encourage everyone to come along and cheer on the team.
The Reserve League team will play Carrickedmond in Clonbonny on Saturday at 5pm. All players eligible for reserve league are asked to be in Clonbonny at 4.15pm.

“The Pull” is a play written by Liam Horan and John Corless, both Mayo men, and it has been packing each and every venue it has been hosted. It has got widespread acclaim and it a family friendly GAA themed play. It has been said that your sides will be sore such is the amount laughter there is in this play. This play is a beauty and don’t miss it.
Wait for it! Brave Giant are on their way to play in Lanesboro. Brave Giant are a new 5-piece band from North Longford and they are making waves country wide and it will be a great to have them playing in Lanesboro. They are about to release their new EP. Brave Giant will play Lanesboro on Saturday 5th May…make it a date for you and all your friends
The Minor club would like to thank everyone that turned up for the nursery Camp in Clonbonny. A special word to the many parents that turned up and it was a great day for the club, players and their parents. We look forward to another great day in Clonbonny in the near future.
The Under 10 panel started off their season with a blitz in Pearse Park last weekend. Well done to everyone involved.
The U16 team had a win on Thursday night and on Thursday night they play St. Francis/St. Vincent’s in Dromard.
Our Sp. Minor team will play this Monday evening against Granard/Ballymore.
On Tuesday the U14 Div. 1 team will host Clonguish in Clonbonny at 5pmOn Friday our U14 Div. 3 team will play Clonbroney in Clonbonny at 7pm.
On Thursday the U16 team will travel to Dromard to play St. Francis/St. Vincent’s in the league.
Rathcline Ladies
On Sunday morning last in Clonbonny our very young ladies senior team played a great game against Clonguish. The scoreline did not do the efforts of the team justice and for anyone there it was a wonderful game between to excellent footballing sides.
The next senior game will take place on Sunday week in Edgeworthstown when we travel to play the home side.
The U16 Ladies will take to the pitch in Clonbonny on Thursday evening. Time not available when writing the notes but I would expect about the 7pm mark.
The players and their families are reminded to support the senior clubs play in Lanesboro Parish Hall on Saturday night. ‘The Pull’ is reported to be a wonderful laugh throughout and there is nothing better than a good play with lots of laughs.

Litter Pick in Salmon’s Lane on Saturday
Ballyleague Tidy Towns is working with wildlife expert Michael Bell, the pupils and staff of Ballyleague National School and the residents of Salmon’s Lane and the general area to create a new marked nature walk with biodiversity signage and seating in the area. To prepare for the opening, we will stage a litter pick in the hedgerows and surrounds from one end to the other end of Salmon’s Lane on Saturday April 16th at 10,30am. All welcome. Ballyleague Village Renewal & Tidy Towns committee would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who came along in such numbers to the official opening of the new 1916 Garden of Remembrance in Ballyleague Riverside park on Easter Monday.
This garden will provide a lasting and fitting memorial to not only those men who signed the proclamation in 1916 but all of those men and women who fought in the name of Irish freedom and helped to establish our republic.
We acknowledge the funding support received from Roscommon County Council for this project under the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme so it was a great pleasure to welcome our special guests on the day – the Cathaorleach of county council Councillor Paddy Kilduff, the Chief Executive officer of the council Mr Eugene Cummins and the County co-ordinator of the Roscommon 1916 commemoration committee Mr Richie Farrell
We sincerely thank the colour party provided for us on Easter Monday by the Ballyboro scouts and venturers – and we say thanks once again to the members of the Castlerea brass and reed band who joined us for this special occasion. The memorable parade from the village down to this garden was joined by a beautifully restored Ford Model T motorcar and we want to thank Eamonn and Gabriel Creamer and Mr John Gilligan for bringing this fantastic car to Ballyleague – especially seen as it such a notable car of that period – having being owned by a member of the Kiernan family from Granard – and was reputed to have carried volunteers from this area after the rising and perhaps even one Michael Collins – who also had occasion to visit the Kiernan family from time to time.
We would like to thank so many people who have worked with us to make the ceremony possible on Easter Monday.
First all a word of thanks to the members of our committee who brought this idea to us at one of our own committee meetings early this year. When the whole 1916 garden of remembrance project was being launched nationwide last year we were deeply engrossed in the final stages of the 300,000 Euro re-development of our riverside park and the new promenade in Ballyleague so we did not at first become aware of the initiative but in November at one of our meetings the garden was once again discussed and several members spoke in favour of it. It was at that stage that we decided to proceed and our thanks to those committee members who have pushed the project and supported it ever since.
Our 1916 Garden of Remembrance was designed and created by the landscape gardener Brendan Farrell from Ardagh Village Landscapes. Brendan met with our voluntary committee on a number of occasions over the last 3 months and together – they jointly devised a layout that includes seven native Irish silver birch trees (Betula utilis var. jacquemontii – White barked Birck), a native Irish hedge and a delightful splash of colour by way of heather and daffodils. The hedge is deliberately made up of a wide variety of species – from many different terrains and backgrounds – something that Brendan says was constructed and devised in that very manner to illustrate the make-up of the people of our nation in 2016 – coming as they do from diverse backgrounds, mixed nationalities and different races and creeds.
The trees and hedge were planted two weeks on an occasion marked by a little ceremony inn the riverside park…
The pathway into the garden was also laid by Brendan Farrell of Ardagh village landscapes and the beautiful plinth, paving and brick work was carried out on our behalf by Michael Harte.
The red brick is very much a flash back to the Dublin of the 1900s and the old tinament buildings and homes where the rebels took refuge at various stages during the rising.
The pathway into the park is , as you see, not a straight one – but instead a winding route with a turn or a twist along the way. Brendan says this is also symbolic of our nation and its own historic development since 1916 – the path of life is never really straight – and so it is with our little pathway in here too.
The granite copy of the proclamation was cut for us from a scanning of the original 1816 proclamation and provided to us and to all the 1916 Gardens of Remembrance committees around the country by Pat Nagle of Nagle Memorials in Killorglin, Co. Kerry.
Our thanks to Larry Leavy and Eamonn Leavy of Leavy Memorials here in Lanesborough who professionally designed and completed the granite memorial stone at the entrance to the park – and did such a fantastic job as I am sure you will agree.
In the last few days before the opening this new remembrance garden has really come into shape but not before a huge effort by all of the aforementioned crafts people and the voluntary members of our committee – we would like to especially thank Detta Cox, James Hudson, Mary Greally and Marie Burke and Colin Burke who started the grass cutting in the garden on Good Friday and Niall Donlon of Roscommon county council who did a superb job cutting the grass in the rest of the park on Good Friday. Our thanks also to John Mochler the area engineer of the county council here and to all the elected members for this municipal area who played their part in putting all the arrangements in place.
Finally – We also wish to thank John O’Loughlin, John Francis Donlon, Doreen Oates , Gerry Trimble, Denis Dunne, Maura Hudson, Maris Rozalinskis, Bryan and Eoghan and Ciaran Mullooly for their work in the park over the last few days.
In keeping with our commemoration of this centenary our committee commissioned the ceramic artist Patsy Preston to create a special mosaic on the old swimming pool wall just around the corner in the riverside park – to leave us with a lasting reminder of the occasion. Patsy has already created three beautiful mosaic pieces when the park was officially opened last May – working on that occasion with young people in the area – students from Lanesborough community college and members of the Ballyborough scouts and venturers. On this occasion we asked her to visit the two care homes for the elderly in our parish and work hand in hand with the residents there to create a lasting memorial to the patriots of 1916 and reproduce some of the best known scenes in our village. Patsy worked with the residents of Innis Ree and Costello’s care home. The finished mosaic was unveiled by the Roscommon county manager Eugene Cummins – doing the honours with a beautiful piece that Patsy has created – a word of advice on the detail of the mosaic – you may see a lake boat on it and two men rowing it – this scene is based on a story that is recorded in local history sometime after 1916 when a local rebel was injured in a mine at Beechwood on the Roscommon road and was brought to an island on the lake during his recovery. Patsy has done a marvellous job and the mosaic is well complimented by the beautiful daffodils in our park provided to us free of charge by Jim McCaulfield and the Casey family from the Topaz shop on the circular road in Roscommon. The daffodils were planted by the young boys and girls from the junior tidy towns teams of Ballyleague national school last November and are fantastic.
Finally – a special word of thanks to Ballyboro scouts and venturers who brought the Fox – a heritage barge originally built in 1937 to the opening of the garden. This beautifully restored barge is a credit to the scouts and their leaders and provided brilliant hospitality to all our visitors on Easter Monday.
