Lanesboro Ballyleague notes 29th February 2016

Lanesboro Ballyleague

The Green – a living history

In no 31 I omitted to include Betty Glynn and her daughters Samantha, Wendy, Louise and Aideen.

We now move into the inner houses and we begin with No 33 where John and Lollie Harte lived with their family of Jack, Loretta, Carrie, Owen, Georgie, Miriam, Joe and Matt. After the Harte family moved out to the Longford where they opened a new filling station the Mc Gann moved into the house, Jim and Barbara and their family of Jeaffrey, James and Colette. Aaron and Colette (nee mc Gann) were next to live there and it is now occupied by Jeaffrey Mc Gann. Next door in 34 was a family from Kildare Paddy and Kitty Hennessy, I have children’s names as Blossom Carroll and Mary Hennessy, both I believe moved to England. The next residents I am informed was Brendan and James Gilmore followed by John and Detta Jordan and their family Francis, Johnny, Mary, Caroline, Declan, Anthony, Lisa, Fintan and Westley.

Lough Ree Monster Festival

Following the recent meeting of the Festival committee it was decided not to hold a festival in 2016. It was agreed that what we would do was run a number of fundraising events throughout the year and plan a wonderful and exciting Lough Ree Monster Festival in August 2017.

A number of years ago there was a Lough Ree Monster Festival and the committees feeling was that the Lough Ree Monster Festival encompassed both sides of the bridge and created a tremendous vibrancy within the area. Already the committee has made an approach to the creating the Lough Ree Monster once again and they look forward to thousands coming to Lanesboro to see the Lough Ree Monster makes its way from Lough Ree back to the back to the bridge where it will reside for the weekend.

The Lough Ree Festival will run on August weekend from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th August 2017 with a host of exciting events over the weekend. The committee urges your full support in all the upcoming events and they would love full participation form the communities in making this a wonderful and joyous occasion for those at home and those abroad that will come back to share a very special weekend.

The aim of the Festival committee is to promote Lanesboro/Ballyleague as a tourist destination by attracting visitors to our town. This gives us a unique opportunity to showcase, our people, the River Shannon which runs through the town, dividing Lanesboro and Ballyleague, Longford and Roscommon, Leinster and Connaught and the diocese of Elphin from Ardagh and Clonmacnois. There are also proposals for an exciting new cycle and walking route which will further advance Lanesboro and Ballyleague as an area of high activity.

A festival such as this allows the communities of Lanesboro and Ballyleague to come together in celebration.

We are very proud of our community and town and hope that visitors will come to appreciate it as much as we do.

The committee are looking for any photographs of that festival and if you have some please bring them to O’Brien’s where they will be scanned and returned immediately.

The committee will meet on this Wednesday night in Aide’s at 9pm and if you would like to come along the committee would warmly welcome you as they draw up a programme for the events of this year and next.
