The Green – a living history
I have not got the full details of the three front house but here are the family names I have and when I get the rest I will add them in at a later date. In no 30 There was a Pat Smith, a Mc Grath family from Dublin I believe, Noel and Mrs. Quinn, Michael and Kay Feeney and their family Pearse, James and Michael and presently James and Mary Feeney and their family. In no 31 there was JP and Kathleen O’Boyle, their sons Brendan and John, Martin and Mrs. Flannery and their children Tracy, John, Paul, Stephen and I believe they moved back to Galway. Donal and Mrs. Wynne and family, Liam and Pat Connerton and daughters Denise and Michelle and presently Bill and Carmel Mc Evoy. The name I have for 32 are Eamon and Mrs. Carley, a Henderson family from Co. Dublin, a Harrington family from Co. Dublin, EJ and Joan Browne and family, Frank and Mrs. Toner and their children Shirley, Francis, Patricia and Gillian. The house was then bought by Stephen and Anne (nee O’Connor no 41) Brennan. I also have the name Michael Quinn for living in one of the three houses but I cannot get any further details.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Last year the St. Patrick’s Day Parade was a very special event, made so by the leading of the parade by members of the Lanesborough Fire Department, Lanesborough, Massachusetts, USA. Deputy Fire Chief Charles ‘Butch’ Garrity and Fireman Max LaCasse made the cross Atlantic trip to be with us on St. Patrick’s day and also to make a special presentation to Lanesboro’s Fire Service on the occasion of the opening of the new station on the Longford Road. Joe Mc Grath captured the honour for the two men perfectly with the photograph below.

This year the parade promises to be even bigger and better than those gone before and the committee would like to encourage as many as possible to partake in the full event.
The St. Patrick’s Day Parade will again take place in Lanesboro Ballyleague on St. Patrick’s Day, Thursday 17th March commencing from St. Faithleach’s grounds at 2pm
Now is the time for everyone to be preparing their floats and gathering their ideas as to how they will support the parade on St. Patrick’s Day.
As usual there will be the customary number of prizes for the outstanding floats and shop displays. This year there will be a prize for the best centenary float. More details will in the next couple of weeks.
The annual draw will take place and tickets are now on sale locally. The proceeds of the draw will go to help greatly in the funding of the parade and you are asked to be your normal generous self by supporting the draw. The prize structure is 1st €500, 2nd €200, 3rd €100, 4th €50, 5th €50, 6th€50 and 7th €50. The draw will take place in Clarke’s Bar on St. Patrick’s night.

Festival 2016 Meeting
The next meeting of the Festival committee will take place on this Wednesday 24th February in the Yacht Bar at 9pm. If you are interested in being involved in what promises to be a fantastic festival, then come along to the meeting.
50/50
The weekly 50/50 draw took place on Monday night last 15th February in the Yacht Bar. The winner was Mary Jo Killian, Rathcline who received a wonderful €465. Envelopes are on sale from club members in local shops and pubs and in O’Brien’s.
Death
The death occurred in Tullamore Regional Hospital on Tuesday 9th February of Patrick Fox, Sheehaun, Curraghroe. Packie as he was most commonly known was a native of Foxford, Co. Mayo and moved to Curraghroe many years ago and after a time he married local girl Bridie Kelly. He was a very quiet and inoffensive man who would be seen regularly driving his trust Ferguson 35 as he went about his daily farming duties. Packie worked his land very tastily and diligently and had a great pride in his work. He was an excellent neighbour and friend and would never see anyone in trouble, he was always ready to help in their time of need. His passing will leave a great void. Packie’s remains reposed at Smyth’s Funeral Home, Roscommon on Wednesday before being removed to St. Mary’s church, Ballagh. Following his Funeral Mass on Thursday his remains were laid to rest in Cloontuskert. We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to his wife Bridie, son Noel, daughters Maura and Patricia, relatives and many friends.
Sponsored Canoe
Junior Hannon is about to fulfil a burning ambition when he will undertake the mammoth canoe from Lanesboro to Limerick. He will take on this feat commencing on Friday 27th May. Junior is doing this canoe to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society and he would like that everyone would sponsor and help this excellent cause and who are doing great work in their attempts to help fight cancer. Sponsorship cards are in O’Brien’s and many outlets throughout the area

Victim Assistance
Victim Assistance is a voluntary organisation that provides emotional and practical assistance to all victims of crime and traumatic incidents. The local branch is now recruiting members. Full training will be provided and all applicants are Garda vetted. If you feel you could be a help to victims of crime phone the national office on 066 7119830 or email fedva@eircom.net.
St. Christopher’s N.S. Open Day
This is an invitation to visit St. Christopher’s National School (4 to 18 years) on their Open Morning on Saturday next 27th February from 11am to 1pm. This is an opportunity to meet the Principal and Staff and to view the facilities that are available.

Good day for Lough Ree AC
Last weekend was a busy one on the athletic front. The Connaught Indoor Championships took place in AIT Indoor Arena with under 12 and 13 age groups on Saturday and Under 14 to Senior on Sunday. The club was restricted on numbers but those in attendance acquitted themselves exceptionally well, winning one gold, one silver and one bronze medal. Conor Rohan switched from the discus to the shot as there was no competition in his favourite event and collected gold and a Connaught title for his effort. Caoilinn Flood failed to click in her high jump event but as she was entered in the 1k Race Walk, she over compensated by winning a silver medal and qualified for the All-Ireland in the process . Last but not least Mark Brady was third in the senior shot. Winning medals is not the beginning and end of everything particularly at this level.
Roisin Brennan, Louise Costello and Kieran O’Dowd gave good accounts of themselves and were never too far away from a place on the podium. Staying with athletes and referring to the club’s “Golden Oldies” congratulations are due to Gillian Clyne who got married last week and Shirley Finn who won a schools “Come Dancing” competition in Co Meath recently- apples do not fall from the tree, her father Jim, a former coach, was handy on his feet! Carmel Fannon – take note. Looking forward to the All-Ireland Indoor Finals in three weeks’ time.
Pike Angling Club
The annual membership for Lanesboro Pike Angling club is now due for 2016. Member ship is available from committee members; Chairman Louis Rhatigan, V. Chairman Gerry Mitten, Secretary Eithne Smyth, Ass Secretary Noel Rhatigan, PRO Aiden Farrell, Joint Treasurers Joe Farrell and Brian Tabiner, in the Yacht Bar and also in Adie’s Bar. The fees for the year are; Adult fishing €10, OAP’s, Juniors and non-fishing members €5.
There will be a special draw for a 40” Toshiba Smart television for non-fishing members. The draw will take place following the first competition of 2016 which is planned for April. Details of the competition will be announced at a later date.
The committee is looking forward to a good year fishing for everyone and they thank you in advance for your continued generous support.

The organising committee of the Lourdes pilgrim Fund held their annual church gate collection recently. The sum donated was €660.14 and the local committee would like to thank everyone that donated for their generosity.
Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club
Scuba training is progressing well. Lectures Thursday night will be on computers, dive cylinders and regulators. There is a Full-face Mask course coming up in Athlone soon. Anyone interested, club diver or above, should contact Michéal Farrell or Frank Casey. If possible there may be an introduction to Full-face Mask use for our trainees. Written and pool tests are only a couple of weeks away so time to revise! If you need a little help on the courses covered contact the lecturers and they’ll be more than happy to help. There is great response in the diving holiday so if you are interested in going contact Emer immediately. The price quoted is for immediate booking and is considered excellent value. Finning to The Cut continues on Sunday for everyone. Take note that a minimum of three fins are required prior to diving. Trainees are reminded paper work, including medicals, must be in order before the Easter dive. No exceptions!
Lanesboro Library
Art Class – Art class 4 with Nicolette continues in Lanesboro Library on Wednesday 2nd March at 8pm. The Cost of the course is €10.00 per night.
Book Club – Book Club will meet at the library on Friday 26th February at 11am. The book for discussion will be ‘The Blue Between Sky and Water’ by Susan Abulhawa. All welcome!

Club Planning and Development Night: St Faithleach’s GAA Club is in the process of developing a five-year strategic Club plan, which will map out the future direction of our Club. This is a key development for us as we aim to build on our past and build for the future. As part of this process, we are holding a consultation Club planning workshop on Saturday 19th March for all our members, officers, players and all in the community. The purpose of this workshop is to give everyone in our community the opportunity to have their say in our future. This will be a workshop based event and will take no longer than two hours. Those present will discuss various topics in small groups, including coaching and games development, communication, facilities development etc. Everyone present will have ample opportunity to input and it will be facilitated by two facilitators appointed by the County Board. Your attendance at this important event for our Club is greatly appreciated and I would also ask you to encourage others to attend. We look forward to seeing you there.

50/50 Lotto – Congratulations to Mary Jo Killian, Rathcline, who was last Monday’s winner of €465 in our 50/50 draw.
Senior Championship Draw – Last Monday night saw the draw for the senior championship draw made. We will be in Group 3 where we will face Carrickedmond in our opening game. The other teams in our group are Mostrim, Ballymahon and Fr. Manning Gaels. Two teams from our group will go through to the quarter finals.
DVDs of Variety Show – DVDs of our recent variety show are available now in O’Brien’s for €10. We had great feedback about the show from so many who attended on the night so if you want to see the show again or for the first time now’s your chance to get your hands on the DVD.
