Pride of Place

This week the ‘pride of place and indeed parish’ must go to the Shannon Gaels Minor football club who have been awarded the wonderful accolade of representing County Longford in Croke Park in an under 8 blitz that will see the young players from throughout the country celebrating 125 years of the GAA. This is a wonderful honour for the Shannon Gaels Minor Club and it testimony to the tremendous work that the club continues to do in the promotion of underage football in the parish of Rathcline. We congratulate the young players and the club officials.

Thank You

I would like on behalf of the Irish Heart Foundation Walk to thank everybody that contributed so generously to my walk. At the time of walking the amount pledge was over €1800 – a remarkable amount in the climate of today. Thank you so very much.

Connaught Semi Final

The Connaught semi final between Roscommon and Mayo will take place in Castlebar on Saturday week 20th June. Tickets will be on sale in O’Brien’s from later this week.

The following week Galway will play Sligo in the second semi final and tickets for that match will also be available.

Fianna Fáil

Fianna Fáil, Lanesborough Cumann would like to express our thanks to all who turned out, in such great numbers, to cast their vote in the recent elections. A special thank you to those who voted for our three Fianna Fáil candidates, two of whom, Mick Cahill and Barney Steele, were elected. Anne Marie Nolan, an excellent candidate who would have made a great Councillor was, unfortunately unsuccessful, on this occasion.

Congratulations to Mick and Barney, Larry Bannon, Paddy Belton and Seán Farrell  Fine Gael and Mark Casey Independent on their great result and commiserations to those who were not in the final six.

May we also take this opportunity to express our appreciation for the way Pat and Michelle and their two able assistants ran the polling booths in such a friendly, good humoured and quietly efficient manner.

Local Area Plan

This is your opportunity to have your views heard as Longford County Council will be holding a meeting on Wednesday 24th June in St. Mary’s Parish Hall at 8pm.Longford County Council are presently putting an area plan for Lanesboro together and it is very important for everybody that has an interest in the future of Lanesboro attend and express their views.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Anne O’Reilly, The Green and her family on the death last weekend of her mother Mrs. Nellie Craig, Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath.

Cemetery Sunday

The dates are now set for Cemetery Sunday’s at the local cemeteries. The first celebration will take place at Rathcline Cemetery on Sunday 5th July, followed by Lanesboro on Sunday 12th July and Clonbonny 19th July. All those with family graves in the three cemeteries are asked to ensure that they have their family graves and surrounds in good condition.

Computer/ Secretarial Course

Lanesboro Community College is offering a FETAC Computer/Secretarial course commencing on Monday 14th September. The course will include a Digital Photography Module. The course certified is FETAC Business Studies. The mandatory elements of the course are Word Processing, Text Production and Information and Administration. From the following there is an elective option – Internet web Design, Image Processing, eBusiness, Information Technology, Computer Applications, Business Calculations, Communications and Work Experience.

The course will take place from September til May and from Monday to Thursday mornings only.  The course is designed for mature students (adults) and for Post Leaving Cert students.

This course is an ideal opportunity for those that wish to receive a recognized qualification, secure a college place or take a year out before college.

Speech Drama & Musical Theatre 

A meeting has already taken place in St. Mary’s Hall on Saturday last with the view – if there is enough interest – to opening a Speech, Drama and Musical Theatre School in Lanesboro. The notice for this meeting was short and Olive Whelan would like to invite those that were not in attendance and are interested in pursuing the above art to contact her by phone to set up a further meeting.

The invitation is for children, young people and adults to become better communicators increase their confidence, to develop their skills and talent and foster creativity. The list of developments is endless and Olive offers you and/or your young people the opportunity to develop a wonderful skill and art.

Summer Camps

County Longford Youth service has a limited number of places available for their summer Camp taking place in Lanesboro from 4th to 7th August for young people between the ages of 10 to 18 years.. The Youth Service camp offers Adventure Centre, Drama and Fun and Games and all for only €10 for the week.  The camp take place each day from 10am to 1pm. Kilgefin Community Games

The County Athletics Finals took place on Sunday 31st May and Monday 1st June. The weather was exceptionally good as was the organisation by the St Faithleach’s GAA Club. We were very proud of the condition they has the pitches in, the way they organised the parking, shop and food for the Community Games officials. On behalf of the local Community Games Committee thank you very much St. Faithleach’s for being such good hosts to us and to the county athletics finals. Thanks also to all the Community Games volunteers who marked out the tracks, assembled or judged races or helped in any way to ensure the day ran as smoothly as possible. We are also proud of all our athletes who represented Kilgefin. Well done to Eoin Farrell and Ronan Banahan who took silver and bronze in the Boys U10 hurdles and Boys U8 80 metres.

Kilgefin was not to wait too long before gold came our way. Our Boys Pitch & Putt Team of Cathal Gunne, Ethan Connell and Michael O’Donnell did us proud with County Gold on Saturday last in Drum and in County swimming Clare Geoghegan won Gold in the Girls U16 Freestyle, while Áine Collier secured bronze in the U14 breaststroke.

Well done to all our athletes who took part and thanks to their parents and all those who helped their preparation in any way.

The Annual Church Gate collection was held last weekend at all masses in the parish and the committee would like to acknowledge your generous support which is much appreciated.

Victory Social

Windsong Music School

Windsong Music School offers summer courses and weekend workshops in learning how to sing and play new instruments during July and August. Weekend workshops are also available throughout the year.

Youth Choir folk groups will be starting during June and guitarists, singers, instrumentalists will be very welcome.

 Social & Presentation Night: We held our Annual Social & Presentation Night in the Club House on Saturday Night last. A great night was had by all. MC on the night, Gerry Donlon welcomed everyone. Club President, Fr. Larney Shine presented Player of the Year Award to Raymond Cox & Club Persons of the Year Award to The Social Committee 2008, Chairman, Derek Thomson. Many thanks to Carrick Boy Quarries & Tom Clarke & Sons for their sponsorship of the trophies. Fr. Larney Shine also presented Medals to our Mid-South Junior Winners Team. Fr. Larney & Fr. Michael congratulated the Club for their great work for the young and old and wished all players and management the Best of Luck in 2009. Club Rose, Alex Harold presented a bouquet of flowers to Oona Monaghan.  Chairman, Frank Curley thanked everyone for their support & congratulated Raymond Cox on his achievement with Roscommon County. Derek Thompson thanked all involved with the Social Committee for their hard work over the last year and was honoured to accept the Club Persons of the Year award on their behalf. He thanked all Management, Emmet & Geraldine Durney, Rubens Catering for the food, P.
