The Green – a living history
For no 8 I am going to need the feedback of those that remember Eugene Morohan. Eugene was a Leitrim man but I have no other information on him or his family. Likewise, with Frank Greene, who moved in after Eugene? I do know there was David, Mary, Paul, Hughie, as he was in the same class as me. The family I believe moved to Carrickboy area. If you can help with the rest of the family could they contact me? The next family was the Heneghan’s from Co. Mayo- Pat and Maura and their family of Gerard, Mary, John and Mark
If you are on any of the social media sites or just in contact with anyone that had or has any connection to the Green can you put it out there that this living history is ongoing. I would love to hear from people as to their thoughts and memories of the Green and try and connect everyone back to the Green. The thoughts and memories are not exclusive to those that lived on the Green but also those from the community that remember the Green being built, the arrival of new families and the excitement of the time.

The 50/50 draw took place last Monday night as usual and the winner this week of the prize of €400 was Damian Farrell, Derrygeel. Envelopes are available throughout the town priced only at €2 and it could be your turn to be a winner next time.
Time to be Proud
The annual pageant The Rose of Tralee gave us a very good reason to be proud of our county representative. The bookmakers had our Rose at 12/1 making her one of the favorites to win. Most of us did not know our Rose, Howard, before her televised interview on the Monday night in the Dome. Daphne illustrated why she was one of the favorites with a very confident and impressive performance in her interview with compere Daithí O’Sé. She was a credit to her family and her county and it was wonderful to see one of our own making such a statement for herself and her county on national television. We have every reason to be proud of Daphne on her performance and her representation of our county. Well done Daphne, we are very proud of you.
New Bridge season begins
The new Bridge season for the Lanesboro Bridge Club will commence on Wednesday 9th September in St. Mary’s Hall at 7.45pm
Clerical Change
It was not too long ago, in fact just three years, since Rev Liz Mc Kinney was appointed Rector to St. John’s Church of Ireland parish in Lanesboro. She was also appointed to minister at Roscommon where she spent many of her younger years when her father was rector in the town and also to Ballinlough. In her short time here she crossed many divides and was a very popular pastor to the entire area. Rev. Liz had and warm and welcoming personality and her departure will be sadly missed by everyone that came to know her. Unfortunately, Rev Liz has had to return to Belfast due to ill health and her time serving her community of St. John’s has had to be cut short. Rev Liz Mc Kinney who has been Rector of the group of parishes of St John’s Lanesboro St Coman’s. Roscommon and Ballinlough. For the last 3years. Rev Liz along with her husband Cyril will return to Belfast to be with her extended family. We would like to extend our very best wishes the Liz her husband and family and we pray for a long and happy retirement for her.
She will be replaced by Rev Allister Donaldson and he is wife Elyse to the group in September and we extend a warm welcome to them as they settle into our area. Rev Donaldson will be living in The Rectory on Roscommon. Exhibition extended
Such is the interest in the history display of the businesses of Lanesboro and Ballyleague 1900 to the present day in the library that it has been decided to run the exhibition right through the month of September. The presentation is on display during the opening hours of the library: Monday 2-8pm, Tuesday 2 to pm, Wednesday 2 to 8pm, Thursday closed, Friday 10am to 1pm and 2 to 5pm, Saturday 10 to 1pm.
Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock
The annual Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock Shrine will take place this year on Sunday next 6th September. The ceremonies will begin with the anointing of the sick at 2.30pm followed by mass at 3pm.
White Collar Boxing
Following the extraordinary success of the Strictly Come Dancing over the Bridge by the Rathcline and St. Faithleach’s clubs they are coming together this year for White Collar Boxing on Saturday 14th November. Both clubs are actively seeking participants and if you are interested in taking part you should contact Lorraine 087-6827966, Susan 087-1748299 or Derek 087-8172668.
White Collar Boxing has really taken off throughout the country and has proven to be hugely popular and successful. The boxing is strictly amateur so no previous experience is necessary. Training and coaching will be provided in the lead up to the night and your participation will be greatly appreciated by both clubs.
Church Gate Collection
The annual church collection in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation will take place at all masses on Saturday and Sunday next 5th and 6th September. Each year your generosity has been magnificent and the organisers are once again appealing to your wonderful generosity.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Anthony Farrell who works at PJ and Joan Donnellan’s Engine Spares, on the death of his mother Nan Farrell, Clonmee. Nan was also aunt of Martin Farrell, Clonfower and Christine Farrell, Corrigeen and we extend our sympathy to them and their extended families.

The Defibrillator group would like to sincerely thank everyone that contributed to their collection last weekend in Lanesboro and Ballyleague. The sum collected amounted to €780.
Rathcline for Intermediate Final
On Saturday last in Pearse Park the Rathcline Intermediate team took a major step forward in regaining their senior championship status when they had a hard earned victory over Cashel in the semi-final.
Following Killashee’s marvellous victory in the other semi-final it is just the case if the Hennessy Cup comes all the way to Lanesboro or stops half way in Killashee. There is no doubt but the next two week will be laden down with excitement in the two parishes and we hope for a marvellous game with our lads coming out on top.
Manager Gareth Johnston has the team flying fit and there is no doubt that he will leave no stone unturned in his quest to win the championship after a 10 year absence. The Killashee team is managed by local lad Ray Curley and this makes the final all h more intriguing. The final is scheduled for Sunday 13th September in Pearse Park.
Public Meeting on Monday next
It’s almost twelve months since our hot water stretch – one of the country’s most popular coarse fishing locations received a body blow from an unwanted visitor.
The first anniversary of the discovery of over thirty million Asian clams invasive species in the hot water fishing stretch beside the power station at Lanesborough takes place on Thursday 11th September, 2015.
On the day of the discovery – 12 months back – Dr Joe Caffrey- senior research officer with Inland Fisheries Ireland – told us the river needed to be immediately dredged to remove the clams and put in place a management plan for future years. A group of state and semi stage agencies met the following day and promised to deal quickly with the emergency,
Regrettably – 12 months later – the situation has not changed – over 30 million Asian clams remain in the hot water at Lanesborough and nothing has been done to either dredge the river or remove an invasive species that is already having a devastating effect on the local fishery.
The clams feed on the same feed stuff as the fish and are creating havoc. The last 12 months has been the worst on the record for fishing at Lanesborough – that’s the view of the local fishing tackle shops and local and visiting anglers. While Lough Ree continues to perform well nearby for pike and perch the hot water stretch at Lanesborough has been decimated. It really is that bad.
The people of Lanesborough, Ballyleague and the midlands angling community are desperately seeking an urgent political response to the loss of thousands of euro in annual tourism income – caused by the infestation of clams.
The Lough Ree Angling hub – set up to tackle the problem and develop fishing in the Shannonside town – has worked with all the agencies to try and put together a strategic plan that could help resolve the present crisis and has now called an urgent meeting of all political representatives on Monday September 7th at 9pm in St Mary’s Parish Hall beside the bridge in Lanesborough to brief all political representatives and try and deal with the situation.
We are appealing for all our political representatives to come along and bring a sense of urgency to this situation. We are now very certain that there is a WAY to deal with this serious problem – what we really need is the WILL to do it.

U8/U10 : Took part in the Go Games Blitz in the Centre of Excellence on Saturday last, a great time was held by all and we would like to thank the management and coordinators for all the time and effort that was involved both on the day and in the lead up to the event.
Mother’s & Others: A big thank you to everyone who supported the ladies with their clothing collection on Saturday last and helped make it successful.
Drive in Bingo: Our Drive in Bingo takes place again on Club Grounds on Sunday 13th September at 3pm. A great day for all the family to enjoy.

Rathcline
Intermediate Championship – After a ten year wait we are back in a championship final! On Saturday evening we beat our neighbours Cashel 0-12 to 1-06 in a close fought game in the semi-final of the Intermediate Championship in Pearse Park. Well done to all the players and to the management team. We now face our other neighbours Killashee who overcame Sean Connolly’s in the other semi-final. The final will take place on Sunday September 13th in Pearse Park with the time to be confirmed. This is the biggest game the club will have played in the last ten years and we urge the whole town to get behind the team flying the Rathcline colours.
League Division 2 – On Saturday evening next September 5th we play Ardagh in the league in Clonbonny at 6.45pm. Please support.
New Longford senior manager – Congratulations to Rathcline clubman Denis Connerton who has been announced as the new manager of the Longford senior county team. Another good day for Rathcline, we would like to wish Denis the best of luck and we hope that he can bring success to the county.

Birthday Celebrations – We would like to wish a happy 30th birthday to our club secretary Sarah Kearney who celebrates her birthday this coming Thursday September 3rd. Also celebrating their birthday that day is Kieran (Duff) Feeney, who has been involved in the club at many levels from underage, ladies, senior team and the executive. Duff turns the big 40. Happy birthday folks from all at Rathcline!
