We had a great trip out on the River Shannon on Saturday.

If you like the water, keeping fit, great fun and meeting new people – why not join us every Saturday morning in the car-park in Lanesborough at half ten.

Everyone over the age of 12 is welcome! For further information please email us at the Club lrrowingclub@gmail.com or call 087-7496479 after 6pm.

Memories continued

The memories of last stirred up many memories for a lot of people judging by the number of comments in the shop and the emails received. It was great to chat to so many about the

In 1961 the new houses in Knock were inhabited and those that moved in were JJ and Gertie Fallon, John and Betty Reilly, Joe and Josie Kiernan, Johnny and Phil Chalmers, Eamon and Maura Fallon, Tom and Mrs. Carberry, Barney and Annie Ross and Jimmy and Mrs Clarke.

Memories are great but there is always someone left out when you take a trip down memory lane and of course I made the cardinal sin of starting my trip at nurse Donlon’s and omitted from my list the best located house in the town, Eamon and Eithne Ryan’s – where would you get a better location and of course Paddy Kenny’s Garage – if only those walls could talk they would tell some stories

I was told through an email from Bernadette Troy formerly Bernadette O’Neill in Washington that I had left out Harold’s cinema.  To tell the truth I never heard, until I got the email, about Harold’s cinema and I am sure it will bring back memories to those that can remember it.

Some people have encouraged me to go through the houses on the Green. That will be a much more difficult task considering all the families that came and went even through my time. This is something that needs much more work. I have made a start by asking people to recall for me the names they can remember and I am hoping that Bord na Mona will have kept their records of all in the Green. It will be a challenge and I hope that in the near future I will have the comprehensive list for the 64 houses.

Birth

Congratulations to Alan and Orla Fayne, Aughakeel, on the birth last week of a baby boy.

Fishing Competition

Last Saturday Lanesboro Pike Angling club held a children’s competition on the river bank. It was a very successful day with 15 anglers taking part, ranging in age from 6 to 14 years old. A fun day was enjoyed by all with lots of fish being caught. All managed to win a prize, nobody went home empty handed. It is hoped that there will be another competition for the young anglers in the near future.

The club would like to thank everybody that turned out on the day and look forward to seeing them all again in the next competition.

Defibrillator Scheme

Lough Ree Defibrillator Scheme had its first meeting almost two years ago. Its aim was to have defibrillators available for the community and to train people in their use in the parishes of Rathcline and Kilgefin.

Following some fund raising, the group purchased defibrillators and training equipment. To date there are over 60 people trained in the use of an AED. Training has taken place in the Co-Op hall, St. Mary’s hall, ESB clubhouse and Ballagh National School. There are three local instructors Kevin Madden and Evelyn Rooney in Rathcline and Aisling O’Shaughnessy in Ballyleague. The training is free and takes four hours. Training is ongoing and more people are encouraged to train and in time become responders. The more people trained the greater chance of saving lives. Contact the co-op for more information.

Presently there are responders on call in both the Rathcline and Kilgefin areas. These responders have an AED with them at all times. Each responder is on call for two or three days each month. There is an AED inside the Co-Op building and the five staff members are fully trained. There is also one in Johnston’s Pharmacy where Gareth is also trained.

To mark ‘Happy Heart Weekend’ the C0-Op has now placed and AED outside of Keane’s Supervalu. This AED can be accessed 24 hours a day. The committee would like to thank Bernard Keane for permission to place the AED outside his premises.
