Date Change of Neighbourhood Watch meeting

While we all feel that the Government needs to make crucial and critical cutbacks in spending in an effort to get the economy back on an even keel. The last thing we expected was that while the minister was making announcements on pension cuts that could not be touched unless by the express permission of these ‘pensioners’ he was cutting a vital service to the real pensioners. He was suspending the funding for the Scheme of Community Support for old people.

At a time that not alone pensioners are feeling very vulnerable in their homes and business he hits at the most defenceless in our country. He hits out at the people that put this country on its feet that worked through the last recession to build and make the country what it was before greed and avarice over took in the past few years and swiftly allowed the carpet of support to be pulled swiftly from under their feet. Surely they deserve much better respect that what was bestowed on them in the last election.

As the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs tersely put it “As a result, the funding for a range of activities supported by this Department has had to be curtailed to meet the Government’s objectives”.

Rathcline Neighbourhood Watch group will hold a meeting in the Lough Ree Development Co-Op Hall on Tuesday 12th May at 8.30pm. The Garda Superintendant, local Garda Sergeant Martina Reddington and public representatives will be in attendance. It is extremely important that a huge crowd attend this meeting and voice their opinion on such a crucial and most worthy cause. Questions must be asked and answers must be obtained in response. The people of Rathcline should rise in one voice and ensure that this is the case.

Pilgrimage to Lourdes

The Ardagh Clonmacnois Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place from Wednesday 27th May to Monday 1st June. The pilgrimage will be led by Bishop Colm O’Reilly, Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois. The pilgrimage Director is Monsignor Bernard Noonan, Moate phone 090 6481180 and the invalid section is dealt by Fr. Michael Scanlon P.P. Cloghan phone 0902-57122. The cost of the pilgrimage is €725 inclusive per person.

Club Celebrates 125 years this weekend

Sunday next will see the celebration of 125 years of the GAA and the Shannon Gaels Club are driving the club celebrations.

All associated with all sections of the GAA are asked to assemble in the car-park at 10.30am. The club will parade behind the army pipe band from the bridge to St. Mary’s Church where there will be a special Mass at 11.30am remembering all deceased club members and honouring those that have and continue to develop the club. The chief celebrant will be our Parish Priest Fr. Mickey Reilly who is one of Longford’s legendary footballers.

The club will also make a special presentation at the Church of Ireland congregation at St. John’s Church to mark the involvement of their parishioners to the club over the years.   Following Mass the club activities of the day will commence in Clonbonny where there will be a host of activities.

There will be a celebrity match between former players with team managements to be seen to be believed. Size and lack of stamina will no doubt be the order of the day – The teams – Rathcline will be represented by Manager Packie Reilly assisted by his selector and club president Hilary O’Sullivan. Their team is led by captain Johnny Mc Cormack, Chris Cullen Snr, Mark Casey, Brendan Keane, Seadna Ryan, Louis Skelly, Padraig Farrell, Michelle Lisle, Declan Connor, Louis Mullooly, Steve Peters, Albert Cooney, Jimmy Flood, Seamus Nolan, and Diarmuid O’Sullivan. The Honest John Martins (the original of the Rathcline species) will be managed by Kevin Murray with Jim Harold ably assisting him in the selection of this superstar outfit who will be led by captain James Casey, and the panel is John Sorohan, Joe O’Brien, Anthony Healy, Joe Kiernan, Brendan O’Sullivan, Sean Mc Dermott, Jacqui Rooney, Denis Crinigan, Joe Rooney, Brendan Rhatigan, Brian Kennelly, Padraig O’Dowd, Michael O’ Sullivan, John James O’Reilly and P.J. O’Neill. There is no doubt the game will have the same intensity and will be similar to that thrilling encounter on Sunday in the Hurling League Final between Kilkenny and Tipperary. The talent on show ensures that this game will be riveting with a huge amount of thrills and spills or should I say trips and fouls. Never again will such a fine and talented group of footballers ever be gathered together in Clonbonny. This game is a must and one that cannot be missed. This game is assured to bring tears but it will surely be tears of laughter. Don’t miss it. In the event of a draw cardiac extra time will be played of half hour a half.

There will be an exhibition of rounders by the under 16 panel. There will be a match between the senior team and the under 14s in bys and the senior team will be meeting their wearing wellingtons. While the senior ladies will play the Under 14 ladies and the senior ladies will be wearing runners.

There will be the unveiling of a plaque in memory of everybody that has worked, played and supported the club since its inception.  There will also be an unveiling of club historical documents from its earliest days in the reception room. These documents were kindly donated to the club by Eddie Farrell and we are most grateful to him for his gesture.

Kieran Feeney has been busy throughout the parish getting interviews from club members and players both past and present and his excellent interviews will also get its first airing.  The club will also announce a panel to investigate and document a history of our club.

There will be a launch of a census of the population of foreign nationals in the parish and adopt an inclusion plan to make them feel part of and participate in our club events. The cultural side of the GAA Scόr will also take a place of pride in the celebrations especially as it is a developing activity in the club and bringing so much enjoyment to so many club members.

This promises to be a wonderful day for the club and parish and it is very important that you are part of the celebrations. A collection will be taken up on the day with the full proceeds going to the Special Olympics.

The day of celebrations will be brought to a close with a ‘Hooley and Oiche Céoil’ in The Peer Inn, Lisnacusha. The club encourages all parishioners to finish off a great day with a great night out in the Peer.

The club would like to invite and welcome anybody that was part of the parish in any stage of their lives back to the club for the day. It would be great to relive memories and meet up with old friends and fellow parishioners.

Heart Foundation Walk

Already there has been a wonderful response to my appeal for sponsorship for my walk in Kerry in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation. Donations have arrived from all surrounding parishes and further afield. I would like to extend my sincere thanks and it is my pleasure to be walking for people with such generosity.

Are you interested in the sport of Athletics

A new monthly athletics e-zine will provide runners all over Ireland with information about the sport they love – and it will be absolutely free of charge.

The new e-zine is being launched by two Mayo men – Mark Scanlon and Liam Horan – in mid-April. Mark and Liam are both keen runners, with Mark something of an endurance man – last year he ran seven marathons in seven different continents over seven months.

But just in case that achievement scares people into thinking the new e-zine is solely targeted at people who can run forever. Liam is a man coming from the other end of the scale.

Mark has a body fat count that barely registers on the scale. Liam is the man with a much fuller figure, which brings it own, challenges when running. Between the two of them, they feel we can bring out an e-zine that will appeal to all shapes and sizes.

Liam recently completed two 8ks, my first races in over 20 years, and his aim is to break 40 minutes this year for that distance. Modest stuff!

Runners – speedsters and the more leisurely-paced – can sign up for the e-zine by logging onto www.rundirectireland.com, where they can enter their name and email address. Each month, the e-zine will be emailed to subscribers in medium resolution, so it won’t clog up their inboxes.

Mayo native, Liam Horan is a well known and respected journalist with columns in the Irish Examiner, Athlone Voice and a contributor to the Des Cahill Drivetime radio show. He is also editor of the newly produced Connaught GAA newsletter ‘Into the West’. You can obtain a free copy and register to have each edition sent to your inbox by clicking on the following link magazine@connachtgaa.ie
