Death

The death occurred on Monday 20th October of Tom Nelson, Curraghroe. Tom a native of the Curraghroe area, along with his wife Mary, retired back to his native soil some 20m years ago where he built a new bungalow in Curraghroe. Retired in England as from his arrival back to our area Tom continued to work arduously. Tom renewed old friendship as well as making new friends very easily such was his personality. His nature was warm and welcoming and he would never see a person in need of anything. Tom’s passing will leave a great void in the entire community. He was known as a hardworking man and you would be left in no doubt having watched or worked with him even for one day. Tom suffered an illness over three years ago and the fashion of the man meant that he suffered it with great determination, strength and dignity.

His remains reposed at his residence on Thursday last before being removed to St. Cecelia’s Church, Curraghroe. Following his Funeral mass on Friday Tom was laid to rest in Cloontuskert cemetery. To his wife Mary, daughters Mary and Sandra, sons Al and Des, brother John (Manchester), relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Death

It was with great sadness and regret we learned of the death at Innis Ree Nursing Home Ballyleague on Tuesday 21st October of Patricia Treacy, Aughavorney, Curraghroe. Patsy as she was more commonly known was predeceased by her husband Jack. Patsy was a warm lady who had an instant impact on all the came to know her. She was woman of a warm and friendly disposition whose neighbourliness knew no bounds. She was a hard working lady whose life revolved around the rearing of her family. Patsy had a great turn of phrase and always left you with a smile on your face. She will be sadly missed by everyone but her memory will always leave a smile on our faces. Her remains reposed at her residence on Thursday last and following the removal of her remains to St. Mary’s Church Ballagh and Funeral Mass on Friday she was interred alongside her husband Jack in Derrane cemetery.

To her sons Billy, Sean and Jim, daughters Maura and Aileen, sisters Myra and Ruth, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Boat Building

The Mens Shed group were delighted to get approval this week for a 22 week training course in the traditional skills of building wooden lake boats. They have now to iron out a problem that has arisen with regard to the lack of a spacious venue to train 16 local men who have signed up to build the boats. – If you can help – please let them know – Do you know where this is an empty secure shed where the four boats 18 feet long could be made?…it would be a great pity not to be able to go ahead with the event now for the want of a venue for just 20 weeks – so if you can help please ring Ciaran at 0433327691 or call to Joe Cribbin in the Daybreak shop.

Rathcline GAA

The club would like to offer their condolences to the Farrell family on the passing of Eddie Farrell, originally from Tullyvrane. Eddie who was chairman and secretary of the club in the late 1930’s was hugely respected in the parish and beyond. He lived to a great age and recently passed the 100 years mark in the Summer. He joined in the celebrations for the 125th anniversary of the GAA when he attended Clonbonny a few years back. One of the old stock, his nephew still remains in Tullyvrane. He played football for St Mel’s and Rathcline, and was an avid Man Utd fan, but will be fondly remembered for his work with his local club. May he rest in peace.

The 50/50 draw is going from strength to strength, and thanks to everyone that donates their €2 every week. A special thanks to the sellers and buyers as without their help the club would be struggling. This week’s winner was Aidan Ganly, The Green, who won €315; the draw for this week takes place in The Peer.

Our final Lotto draw took place on Saturday; we would like to heartily thank our patrons for supporting our draw throughout the years. A lot of work has been done with the pitch and its with everyone’s help that we strive to pay back the loan through fundraisers like this one. The final winners were Hilary O Sullivan, Main St, Michael Shanley Killashee, James P Quinn Aghakeel, and Tom Maxwell Thureen.

Congrats to our U 21 team who defeated Ardagh in the 1st round of the championship on Saturday. Western Gaels proved worthy winners in the end with well taken goals and points. Well done to the management and squad, we wish them the very best in upcoming games.

Strictly Come Dancing is well and truly under way with participants practicing eagerly at weekends. Anyone that I have spoken to has been putting in huge effort for the fundraiser in November. It has captured the imagination of the dancers and hopefully will be well attended by people from both Rathcline and Faithleachs. There are buses organised for people that want to travel and for any more info on what promises to be a great event, please contact Lorraine Farrell or Pat Connerton for more details.

The Ali Smyth tournament takes place on the 1st of November in Clonbonny at 3 pm against Garrycastle. This is always a decent game and extremely competitive. It’s a wonderful way to support the memory of a woman who meant so much to so many people. A true warrior and lady off the pitch, it’s always a game that invokes the spirit that Allison had and the way she played the game of football and life, please support.

Last Sunday, some of our players and chairman stripped of for a calendar to raise funds for St Christopher’s and Pieta House. A huge thanks to Gerard Farrell, Daithi Mulvihill, Eoin Sorohan and Kevin Chappy Chapman. The lads sucked in their guts, smiled politely, and acted like models in the buff, all for a good cause. Seemingly Chappy has been inundated with full time model offers, Louise acting as manager has remained tight lipped on the subject, well done to all, please keep an eye on our Facebook page for red hot photos but again thanks to everyone who took part.

Shannon Gaels

Congratulations to our U12 team who continued their fine performances last weekend when they won the U12 Shield final in the annual Shane Brennan Memorial competition. Captain, Cian Farrell was a proud young man receiving the Shield on behalf of his team mates and mentors having beaten Annaduff, Leitrim in the final.

The club would like to thank Clonguish for inviting us into the competition.

We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to the Leavy, Brennan and indeed the Farrell family, Bray, on the death in Bray, Co. Wicklow of Eddie Farrell. Eddie, in his younger days, played a major part in our club both on the field as a player and off it as a club officer. Some of his work can be still seen in the clubhouse in Clonbonny. Eddie who celebrated his 100th birthday last May came back to the club many times and it was always great to have him back as our guest. Eddie married local woman Kathleen Brennan, Lismacmanus, ran a thriving business in Bray for many years. Although he was out of the parish in body his spirit was always on the affairs of his native parish and club. May he rest in peace.

At the time of going to press our Minor team will play the Division 1 Shield final in Dunbeggan on this coming Sunday at 2pm. They will play Slashers and we are looking forward to another spectacular game similar to the one when both sides met last. As this is the final game of the season we would encourage everyone to come along and support the team.
