Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

Death

A man of the community, a man very proud of his parish and a feature at so many parish events the loss of Michael Hanley, Cashelbeg, on Saturday 26th October  at Midlands Regional Hospital, Mullingar was deeply felt. Mike, as he was most commonly known was the middle child in the family of 11. He was predeceased by his father Edward, mother Mary, his brothers Gerry and Ned and his sisters Mary and Margaret. Mike was a widely recognised and renowned as a very well respected parish man and a wonderful neighbour. In recent years he was in failing health and was cared for in the most astonishing way by his wife Eileen. From his days of playing football with Rathcline, to working with Bord na Mona, to his market gardening skills, his farming and rearing of turkeys for Christmas Mike’s generosity of soul was legendary. Mike was a tremendous sports supporter but he was a most loyal supporter of Rathcline who along with his soul mate Eileen, who never left his side, seldom if ever missed a game. He was a lifetime pioneer and a man of great faith who had a wonderful outlook on life; his personality was always full of positivity and basked in the success of the many he encouraged. Living next to the Turlough Mike had a wonderful take on the history of the Turlough as well as the parish and his knowledge and love of the many birds, some rare, that visited over the winter was second to none. Mike’s personality was warm, friendly, welcoming and his kindness knew no bounds. If you were a visitor to the house he would never let you go without some eggs or vegetables from his garden. Mike was known as the man with the beret and that image of him and his warm smile will never disappear from our hearts and minds. The attendance at his reposing at his son Michael’s residence and again at his Funeral Mass bore ample testimony to the esteem in which he was held.

Mike reposed in his native Cashelbeg on Monday 28th until the removal of his remains to St. Mary’s Church for his Funeral Mass on Tuesday. Following Mass Mike was laid to rest in Rathcline cemetery. Mike is survived by his wife Eileen, his son Michael, his daughters Siobhan and Marie, his sisters Frances, Kathy and Annie, his brothers Johnny, Jimmy and Paddy, grandchildren, relatives and friends to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.

Retirement

On Friday 25th October, the community of Fermoyle National School bid a fond farewell to their Principal Patricia Boyce. Mass was held in the school to celebrate seven wonderful years. Under her guidance, Fermoyle N.S. has continued to thrive physically and socially through so many valuable and meaningful initiatives and learning experiences. Most notably, the creation of a playground facility at the school. Patricia also nurtured the children’s creativity through the Creative Schools Programme and the introduction of a Fermoyle Christmas Concert. This concert has not only benefitted the children hugely but has been enjoyed by the wider community over the past seven years. The staff at Fermoyle N.S. and the wider community would like to thank Patricia for everything she has contributed to school life and the lives of the children. We wish Patricia good health and happiness in her retirement and we appreciate everything she has given our school. Go n-éirí an t-adh leat.

Death

Arriving in Lanesboro many years ago as a housekeeper to Fr. Lynch almost 60 years ago little did we know the impact the then Phil Murphy would have on our community. This correspondent remembers well Phil’s first day in Lanesboro when she came out the back door of the curate’s house to introduce herself to some of the Connaughton children and myself that were playing in the yard. Phil Hanley, Barnacor passed away at the Midlands Regional Hospital on Sunday 27th October. Phil married into the Hanley family when she later went on to marry the late Ned Hanley who passed away 34 years ago. She was in her 90th year; she was predeceased by her parents Rose and John Murphy and her brothers and sisters. Phil had been in failing health in recent years and she was greatly and dedicatedly cared for with great love by her son Raymond. From the very beginning Phil was a very spirited, kind-hearted and homely lady whose outgoing nature endeared her to everyone that came to know her. She was renowned as a wonderful cook with a great loyalty to her family and her new community. She never lost her pride in her home Carrickedmond community and her pride in her home county of Longford could never be called into question. Phil was a lady of great faith with a great devotion to Our Lady. Considering she always had the fire on and the house filled with warmth it replicated the warmth of spirit that was Phil. As well as being a wonderful and dedicated family lady she was excellent at crochet and knitting. Phil was part of the life of our community for so many years and her passing will leave a great emptiness in our hearts but her memory will live long in our hearts. Phil’s remains reposed at Farrell’s Funeral Home on Wednesday followed by her removal to St. Mary’s Church on Thursday. Following her Funeral Mass she was laid to rest in Clonbonny Cemetery. To her son Raymond, sisters in law, brothers in law nieces, nephews, relatives and friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Tidy Towns

Friday last 1st November was a most anticipated day as it was the fateful day for the communities entered in the SuperValu Tidy Towns as the results were announced.

At the time of writing I don’t have a result for Lanesboro but our two other local communities once again showed remarkable improvement. Clearly the wonderful work of Cloontuskert and Ballyleague was once again very well received by the judges. Cloontuskert scored a mark of 372 points which is just 14 marks short of the winning mark of Ballincollig, Co. Cork and showed an improvement of 11marks from 2023. Ballyleague, that received 357 marks showed remarkable 16 mark improvement.

In the case of both communities the visual work done has been remarkable over the past 12 months and much credit goes to the dedicated committees and volunteer workers that give so much of their time.

It is particularly pleasing when people come to the town and compliment the beauty of the area and tell of stopping at Cloontuskert just to take in the beauty created.

To all the committees and workers we must extend our deep gratitude and wish them every success as they strive towards their goal of standing on the winning podium at the SuperValu Tidy Towns announcement.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy Bernie Smith and her husband Michael McKeown, Strokestown Road, Ballyleague on the death of Bernie’s father Donald Smith, Kilmore, Clondra who passed away on Friday 1st November.

Longford Town History

Longford Town this year celebrates 100 years of existence 1924-2024. Their history can be found in print with the excellent publication of The History of Longford Town 1924 – 2024 written by Seamus Leavy. Browsing through the book it brought back many memories of those that donned the famous Red and Black of Longford Town. The beauty of this book is that it puts names to many of the teams through the years and featured many local lads who played for the Town. The names also brought back names that were household names and that were, until the arrival of the book, forgotten but bring back that warm glow of all those familiar names.

Shamrock 165 book offer

Shamrock 165 is a trilogy of books written by Sligo native Gavin Walsh on the first ever Aer Lingus plane crashed on Snowdonia National Park, Wales

This is the true story of both the Irish nation’s and Aer Lingus first fatal crash, which occurred in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales on Thursday 10th January 1952. Gavin spent 13 years researching, writing and compiling the ‘Shamrock 165’ trilogy. His final results are diametrically opposed to both the British and Irish Government’s official investigation findings. The author has accumulated more than 1000 never-supposed-to-see the light of day documents; many of which illustrated in the 3 volumes. The story also details the lives of all the 23 victims who perished on that night almost 73 years ago.

On board was local Rathcline lady Evelyn Belton which makes this book of great interest to locals.

This is a fascinating trilogy of books delving into every aspect of the crash and a tremendous read. The books can be bought in O’Brien’s at a cost of just €65 for the set of three or individually Book 1 at €25, Book 2 at €20 and Book 3 at €30.
