Lanesboro Ballyleague notes
Death
Sudden deaths bring a big shock to a community and none more so than on Friday 28th June when we learned of the sudden death of one of our best known and popular locals Patrick Hannon, Meadowbrook, Ballyleague. Patrick known far and wide as Junior was a native of Roscommon Town and in recent years made Ballyleague his home. Junior was widely known for all the time he spent on the river taking people kayaking weekly with the older generation while during the summer months he ran kayaking camps for the young people of the general area. He had a wonderful grá of water sports and wanted to encourage others to share in this enjoyment. In his younger days he played Rugby with Creggs and later he became a coach with Longford Rugby club. He was also an exceptional goalkeeper in five-a-side football where many a happy evening was spent in the Convent Gym in Roscommon. During his younger years he faced adversity in his life from where he emerged as a wonderful friend to so many and an exceptional person in his daily life. Junior found great satisfaction with his volunteering with all aspects of the Civil Defence and Search and Rescue. In times of need people found great solace in Junior and his wonderful personality and support. During Covid he came into his own bring people to hospital for appointments and assisting in the deliveries of medicines. Friends like Junior don’t come along too often and we must cherish the memories of goodness that Junior brought to our lives. The attendance at the reposing of his remains at his residence in Ballyleague on Sunday 30th June and again at his Funeral Mass in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague bore ample testimony to the esteem in which he was held. Junior was laid to rest in St. Coman’s Cemetery, Roscommon. To his wife Elaine, mother Christina, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, relatives and friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Triathlon Success
Once again the Lanesboro Triathlon club’s ‘Two Province’ sprint triathlon and Kidathon proved to be another outstanding success. Events started with the Kidathon on Friday evening where the maximum 100 youngsters participated in the swim, cycle and run. While the evening was chilly and rain threatening it did not dampen the enthusiasm on the young people who travelled great distances to participate. Included in the 100 were 32 junior athletes from the Lanesboro Junior Tri Club. All of the local youngsters competed with great distinction with some achieving podium positions.
A sign of the popularity of the triathlon saw the club having to stop taking entries from the four corners of Ireland as they reached their permitted number of 600. Indeed they could have taken more such is the popularity and high esteem in which the triathlon is seen from athletes from all parts of the country. The day was mixed with sunshine; the wind and squally showers making it a tricky swim and difficult enough cycle for the athletes as they went to Scramogue and back before embarking on the final leg of the run to Harold’s Cross and back to the finishing line. The race included the sprint triathlon featuring beginners to elite with the elite athletes taking part in the national series; there was also the Aquabike and Tri-a-Tri all taking part in what was another fantastic occasion in Lanesboro and Ballyleague.
Another feature that cannot go unmentioned was the number of stewards that make themselves available for this yearly event. The triathlon club as always sprung into action all week with great numbers preparing the course, the transition area and all other areas to make the event flow seamless. The volunteers once again turned out in droves manning all areas along the course and in the main area at the car park. It is an acknowledgement to the high esteem in which the club is held that people in our community happily turnout and make themselves available to the club for this remarkable day.
Well done to everyone that took part and to everyone that helped and supported the club on both Friday evening and Saturday.
Former resident passes away
Buried on his father’s birthday former local lad Jeremy O’Connor, Ballyleague and Gallowstown Roscommon Town passed away at Galway Clinic on Tuesday 30th June. Son of May and the late Gerry O’Connor, Jeremy never lost his love of and pride for his local Ballyleague community. We remember Jeremy growing up as a bubbly young man with that inimitable smile and tremendous positivity was clearly evident every time you met with him. He was a lad that loved life and in his company he was always good for the craic. He had a great love of music and also loved motor sports and they took him to many places near and far. He was always acknowledged as a man with a great attention to detail in everything he did and though his life ended at a relatively young age he left us with lasting and fabulous memories. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Cora, sons Darren and Cathal, daughters LeeAnne and Ciara, mother May, his sisters Betty and Eileen and brother Bernard, relatives and many friends. Jeremy was laid to rest in St. Coman’s cemetery following his Funeral Mass in the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon.
