Support for Diarmuid Murtagh

On Friday next 22nd local man, St. Faithleach’s and Roscommon county star, Diarmuid Murtagh will embark on a trip along with 49 other GAA players to Kenya. This trip is on behalf of the Self Help Africa and the goal of Self Help Africa is to plant 1million trees across Africa where thousands of families will be able to live off these trees long into the future.

Each player has committed to raising €10,000 each and this is where you can play your part in supporting Diarmuid in achieving the €10,000. You can put your contribution into an envelope with your name on it and leave it into Clarke’s Bar or O’Brien’s shop.

Representing Ireland

Many congratulations to Shane prior that represented Ireland at the recent DAF Trucks UK & Ireland Driver Challenge Final. The competition took place at the Chassis Cab Fenstanton, England.

Shane, son of Ciaran and Jacqui Prior, Tullyvrane was awarded the Ian Joyce Shield. This is a special prize, in memory of DAF Driver Trainer Ian Joyce, and is awarded by the DAF Driver Trainers to the driver they feel represents the right values of a driver and is a credit to the profession.

This is a marvellous accolade for Shane and a wonderful honour to represent his community, his workplace and country so well and we are all very proud of his achievements.

Christmas Reading

As we approach the Christmas season and a time for giving we start considering presents for family and friends. When considering you choices you should not discount the idea of a book and especially one that has local relevance or by a local author. At present there are a number of local books well worth considering; Shannonside Tales by John Casey, Traces of Truth by Ciaran Prior, a host of recent books including the best seller ‘In the Wake of the Bagger’ by Jack Harte, the three book trilogy of Shamrock 166 by Gavin Walsh, The Future is Now by Ciaran Mullooly and books of poetry The Overlap of Things by Margaret Nohilly and Ghost Homeland by Colin Carberry. There cannot be a better feeling of giving a gift to your own by some of your own.

Pat Spillane

The beauty of being a newsagent is that you get to have a read of all the newspapers and on Sunday last an article in the Sunday World by Pat Spillane caught my eye. Love him or hate him Pat always has an opinion and he is not shy about expressing it. This article if you can assess the link is definitely very well worth reading.

This week he reminded us of his time was appointed as ‘ambassador for the Action Plan for Rural Ireland’ that lasted 2 ½ years.

He goes on to say that we are being told that we have full employment, a strong economy and surplus money in the coffers. He goes on to say that so many people are homeless, not able to own or build their own homes.  The Health service is a mess, our trained nurses, doctors and teachers are obliged to go abroad to work. As he says we are exporting our brightest talent.

It led me to think that our Government are not affording them the opportunity to live, work and save in our country. Each day we hear of the cost of living rising to a point that grandparent act as child carers for their grandchildren, you cannot get onto a doctor list as they are all full, no homes can be bought or rented and single people in and out of relationships are moving back into their family homes just to save money for a deposit. Gone are the days that you can work and save money.

Rural Ireland is dying on its feet due to lack of investment. While the National Plan for the Government is to direct new business seeking to enter Ireland into the five main cities unless the owner specifically requests to be place in a certain location it naturally follows the rural Ireland will become places of isolation.

As we listen to what has become a giveaway election with so many promises by all parties you would wonder what has been happening in the previous 5 years of Government. Yet, there has been and I expect there will be no mention by any party of rural regeneration with new businesses or industries going to be directed to rural parts of the country. There will, no doubt, be no change in the planning regulations and charges associated to allow young people move back, build and live in their own communities.

Previously, I mentioned that Lanesboro should be the working centre as it had been since the early 50’s and the benefit for all surrounding communities would be the fulcrum of rural regeneration for all the surrounding communities. The demise of work opportunities in rural areas creates a multitude of problems for business, clubs and associations and the brain drain, so often spoken about here, will grow until there is nothing left but an old community with one or no shop, just a bus to take you to a bigger town to shop. We look at the parishes surrounding us as well as our own community and we see the demise of business in our villages and towns and this is only going to get much worse. The lack of rural policing is also causing great fear and anxiety for many people.  Sadly, we cannot say it will get worse before it gets better because as it stands it will not get better.

As every politician or their representative calls to your door you should be asking all the pertinent questions that affects you, your family, your community and your local workplace community and do not take idle promises. At the time of writing there has been some canvassers visiting our community, unfortunately they have visited all the estates but, apart for one Independent candidate, they have not ventured down the Main Street to face the businesses of the town and hear what they have to say. A,’ sorry I missed you’ leaflet in your letterbox is not worth the paper it is written on.

This is our election to make our voice heard loud and clear in a way that it has never been heard before and make sure that we elect those that you are confident will speak for and achieve for your own community.

Shamrock 165 book offer

Shamrock 165 is a trilogy of books written by Sligo native Gavin Walsh on the first ever Aer Lingus plane crashed on Snowdonia National Park, Wales

This is the true story of both the Irish nation’s and Aer Lingus first fatal crash, which occurred in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales on Thursday 10th January 1952. Gavin spent 13 years researching, writing and compiling the ‘Shamrock 165’ trilogy. His final results are diametrically opposed to both the British and Irish Government’s official investigation findings. The author has accumulated more than 1000 never-supposed-to-see the light of day documents; many of which illustrated in the 3 volumes. The story also details the lives of all the 23 victims who perished on that night almost 73 years ago.

On board was local Rathcline lady Evelyn Belton which makes this book of great interest to locals.

This is a fascinating trilogy of books delving into every aspect of the crash and a tremendous read. The books can be bought in O’Brien’s at a cost of just €65 for the set of three or individually Book 1 at €25, Book 2 at €20 and Book 3 at €30.
