New Principal Teachers
In recent weeks we saw the retirement of our two National School principals, Claire Murphy and Patricia Boyce from Lanesboro Primary and Fermoyle National Schools.
Both positions have been filled with another two ladies. Niamh Moran, who was a teacher in Lanesboro Primary, has been appointed as the new school principal. Niamh, daughter of Johnny and Chris Moran, Carrickedmond has a strong family connection to the parish through her mother Chris who is a member of the Dennigan family, Mahoraveen. Fermoyle N. S. has appointed Elaine Sheridan as their new principal. Elaine is no stranger to the area either as she is daughter of Frankie and Mary Sheridan, Longford. Mary is formerly Brennan, Aughamore, Curraghroe.
We wish both of the ladies health, happiness and great success in all they do in their new positions.
National Training Course in Lanesboro
Over the past three weeks the National Fire Service Director of Ireland hosted a national training course at Lanesboro Fire Station. This course was facilitated by Longford Fire Service. The three weeks training was intensive and each day Fire Brigades could be seen throughout the community carrying out several different exercises. Over the three weeks the local economy was boosted by 25 people who came for training from five counties.
As previously mentioned our local Fire Station and our area is ideally equipped to host such courses and it great to see the station being used for additional training and more use being made of the excellent facility that is our local Fire Station. This is the second major event hosted in Lanesboro and each time the organisers and participants have been high in their praise of Lanesboro as a location and a facility.
In Lanesboro and indeed throughout the Fire Service of County Longford there are still vacancies and if you are interested you should contact HRrecruitment@longfordcoco.ie

Longford Town History
Longford Town this year celebrates 100 years of existence 1924-2024. Their history can be found in print with the excellent publication of The History of Longford Town 1924 – 2024 written by Seamus Leavy. Browsing through the book it brought back many memories of those that donned the famous Red and Black of Longford Town. The beauty of this book is that it puts names to many of the teams through the years and featured many local lads who played for the Town. The names also brought back names that were household names and that were, until the arrival of the book, forgotten but bring back that warm glow of all those familiar names.
Shamrock 165 book offer
Shamrock 165 is a trilogy of books written by Sligo native Gavin Walsh on the first ever Aer Lingus plane crashed on Snowdonia National Park, Wales
This is the true story of both the Irish nation’s and Aer Lingus first fatal crash, which occurred in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales on Thursday 10th January 1952. Gavin spent 13 years researching, writing and compiling the ‘Shamrock 165’ trilogy. His final results are diametrically opposed to both the British and Irish Government’s official investigation findings. The author has accumulated more than 1000 never-supposed-to-see the light of day documents; many of which illustrated in the 3 volumes. The story also details the lives of all the 23 victims who perished on that night almost 73 years ago.
On board was local Rathcline lady Evelyn Belton which makes this book of great interest to locals.
This is a fascinating trilogy of books delving into every aspect of the crash and a tremendous read. The books can be bought in O’Brien’s at a cost of just €65 for the set of three or individually Book 1 at €25, Book 2 at €20 and Book 3 at €30.
