Death

With the passing of one of our Green residents we have lost one of our most astute and well-read and knowledgeable ladies consequently we have lost a fountain of knowledge with the death at Sonas Innis Ree Nursing Home on Monday 21st October of Carmel McEvoy, The Green. Carmel came to Lanesboro when her husband Bill transferred within Bord na Mona from Kildare to Lanesboro. Carmel, a very proud Portarlington and Offaly woman married her husband Bill, a proud Laois man in England in 1958, 66 years ago, prior to returning back to Ireland. She had a great interest in all things and was never happier than toiling in her garden, reading books and papers, watching television and listening to the radio for anything happening and especially for political angles on everything. Carmel would debate politics from all sides and it would be a great person that could identify what way she would vote. Carmel had a great and deep faith and she was very regularly seen making the short walk from her home opposite the church to the church for mass and prayer. In her spare time Carmel loved to knit and adored animals. She was full of fun, laughter and devilment; she was always ready to pull a prank on some unsuspecting person. She was a strong willed lady who had a wonderful foresight, a tremendous will to live and a very strong minded lady. Carmel had a deep love of her family and was overjoyed as her family grew into grandchildren and great grandchildren. Carmel will be sadly missed by everyone that had the pleasure to know her.

Her remains reposed in Farrell’s Funeral Home, Rathcline Road on Wednesday and her removal took place from her home on the Green to St. Mary’s church on Thursday. Burial took place following Carmel’s Funeral Mass to Clonbonny Cemetery. To her husband Bill, her daughters Marie and Colette, her son John, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Death

Edwin Hubbel Chapin  wrote ‘A man’s love for his native land lies deeper than any logical expression’ and such was the love that Ann Farrell had for her own native townsland of Clonmee, Newtowncashel. To write of Ann’s death in the care of Roscommon Hospice on Tuesday 22nd October is quite difficult. Just three years ago Ann returned to live in Ireland from Copenhagen, Denmark where she bought a house and settled in Cnoc na Gaoithe. She was predeceased by her parents Cissie and Paddy Joe. Ann had fought her illness with a wonderful spirit and strength and faced he demise with a great acceptance. While she reconnected with many locals she quickly endeared herself to many more people locally as was the personality of the lady. Ann could always be seen walking on the highways and byways of our area, she had a tremendous love of all the gifts of nature and especially walking the boglands where nature is at its finest. Ann was great lady with a warm and friendly smile and a quality to match. While in Copenhagen Ann was renowned and highly respected for championing the cause of poor and oppressed people. She was a kind and generous lady and while her presence amongst us was short she has left an indelible mark and a mark that will not be forgotten.

Ann’s remains reposed in Farrell’s Funeral Home on Thursday last. She was removed to the Church of the Blessed Virgin, Newtowncashel, on Friday for her Funeral Mass that was followed by a private cremation. To her daughter, Katrine, granddaughters Ava and Bella, her sisters Christine and Catherine, her brothers Martin, Ger, Padraig, Ronnie and Brian, relatives and many friends locally and worldwide we extend our sincere sympathy

Lifetime Achievement Award for Val Kirwan

Born and bred on the Green, worked with Bord na Mona before moving on to Boston and then San Francisco Val Kirwan left an incredible mark wherever he went.

Val, when living in Lanesboro as a young man was a man of the community whose outgoing personality created an aura that so many people embraced. He was always seen as a wonderful character and a beacon of the community even at such a young age. Val’s input was outstanding for all his involvement with the Shannon Gaels and Rathcline club at all levels.

When Val hit off to Boston on the insistence of his brother Paul while on a leave of absence from BnM. Nobody expected that he would stay and continue his life in the U.S. The city of Boston soon began to realise that they were to benefit greatly from the presence of this Lanesboro man in their city. He was widely known for his commitment to the Irish community, the GAA and especially locals that travelled to the Big Apple.

On a trip in 1988 Val travelled to San Francisco to officiate at a GAA hurling and football tournament and fell in love with the city never to return to the east coast. In 1996 Val found his true calling when he joined the San Francisco Police Department and from then until his retirement 24 years later.

During his time in the SFPD Val as was his character made himself a leading and much respected member of the PD but more importantly amongst the people he served in the San Francisco area. In the latter years of his time in the PD he was on motorbike duty (where he escorted many leading dignitaries and the GAA All Stars through the city) and then he was on airport duty with his dogs Baro and Gilbey. Val on airport duty picked up on the chatter of Irish voices and always welcomed them to the city while having a particular welcome if you said you were from Lanesboro or surrounding parishes.

Recently Val was honoured to receive the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from the San Francisco Bay Law Enforcement Emerald Society for his incredible contribution to San Francisco. They listed out his some of his wonderful contributions to San Francisco and while they said some it was an extensive list.

Val, a son of the late Gerry and Tess Kirwan, left his indelible mark wherever he went and the caring and humanity he showed to so many throughout his lifetime really makes him a most worthy recipient of this Lifetime Award. Not only does it warm the hearts of all of us that knew and loved Val during his time here but it also makes his family here of P.J., Geraldine, Paul, Kathleen, and Gerard immensely proud.

Congratulations to our living legend Val Kirwan.

Longford Town History

Longford Town this year celebrates 100 years of existence 1924-2024. Their history can be found in print with the excellent publication of The History of Longford Town 1924 – 2024 written by Seamus Leavy. Browsing through the book it brought back many memories of those that donned the famous Red and Black of Longford Town. The beauty of this book is that it puts names to many of the teams through the years and featured many local lads who played for the Town. The names also brought back names that were household names and that were, until the arrival of the book, forgotten but bring back that warm glow of all those familiar names.

Shamrock 165 book offer

Shamrock 165 is a trilogy of books written by Sligo native Gavin Walsh on the first ever Aer Lingus plane crashed on Snowdonia National Park, Wales

This is the true story of both the Irish nation’s and Aer Lingus first fatal crash, which occurred in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales on Thursday 10th January 1952. Gavin spent 13 years researching, writing and compiling the ‘Shamrock 165’ trilogy. His final results are diametrically opposed to both the British and Irish Government’s official investigation findings. The author has accumulated more than 1000 never-supposed-to-see the light of day documents; many of which illustrated in the 3 volumes. The story also details the lives of all the 23 victims who perished on that night almost 73 years ago.

On board was local Rathcline lady Evelyn Belton which makes this book of great interest to locals.

This is a fascinating trilogy of books delving into every aspect of the crash and a tremendous read. The books can be bought in O’Brien’s at a cost of just €65 for the set of three or individually Book 1 at €25, Book 2 at €20 and Book 3 at €30.
