Lanesboro Ballyleague notes
Shamrock 165
Shamrock 165 is a trilogy of books written by Sligo native Gavin Walsh on the first ever Aer Lingus plane crashed on Snowdonia National Park, Wales
This is the true story of both the Irish nation’s and Aer Lingus first fatal crash, which occurred in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales on Thursday 10th January 1952. Gavin spent 13 years researching, writing and compiling the ‘Shamrock 165’ trilogy. His final results are diametrically opposed to both the British and Irish Government’s official investigation findings. The author has accumulated more than 1000 never-supposed-to-see the light of day documents; many of which illustrated in the 3 volumes. The story also details the lives of all the 23 victims who perished on that night almost 73 years ago.
On board was local Rathcline lady Evelyn Belton which makes this book of great interest to locals.
This is a fascinating trilogy of books delving into every aspect of the crash and a tremendous read. The books can be bought in O’Brien’s at a cost of just €65 for the set of three or individually Book 1 at €25, Book 2 at €20 and Book 3 at €30.
Championship Update
On Saturday evening last in Kiltoom St. Faithleach’s put in a sterling performance, particularly in the second half when they ran 2023 county champions St. Brigid’s in their first game of the Roscommon Senior Championship. Indeed, they were very unlucky with a couple of goal opportunities which would have tightened the game somewhat at vital stages of the game. This was an excellent performance by the young men of St. Faithleach’s and bodes well for the championship games ahead in the coming weeks.
The deferred first round game will take place on Saturday next 24th August in Ballyleague when the club plays hosts to Western Gaels at 5pm.
Following a week off Rathcline will return to action in the Longford Senior Championship on Saturday evening in Leo Casey Park, Ballymahon on Friday 23rd August where they will take on Killoe Young Emmets at 8pm.
We hope that a big numbers will turn up to support both teams and we wish them the very best of luck.
Death
We all thought a long and happy retirement was in store for Pam Farrell, Derrygeel, when she retired from the Friends of Asthma shop on Main Street. Unfortunately this was not to be the case and it was with a great sadness we learned of the death of Pam on Thursday 8th August. Pam and Pat’s life was seriously affected by the untimely death of their son Ciaran back in 2018. Pam a born and bred Dubliner from Blackrock moved to Derrygeel when she married local farmer Pat Farrell. She was true blue Dub and followed her county fortunes in many codes and shared her delight in all their achievements. Pam was a jolly woman who always wore a great smile and sense of happiness that encompassed all around her, she had a great vibrancy and a wonderful personality that was everybody found to be infectious. She took to country life as if she was here all her life, her hospitable nature, her concern and encouragement; her motherly ways ensured Pam was a trusted confidant. She was a lady of great faith and a very regular mass goer. She had a magnificent family pride and adored her sons but her love grew to greater heights on the arrival of her grandchildren. Pam was best known for her time in the Friends of Asthma shops on Main Street but she also left an indelible mark on the time that she worked in the power station where she was a treasured member of staff. There are a multitude of things that she involved herself in most notably the Ladies Mini Marathon and the ICA.
Pam’s remains reposed in Glennon’s Funeral Home, Longford on Thursday 15th August. Mass of the Resurrection took place in St. Mary’s Church on Friday followed by cremation at Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan. To her husband Pat, sons Martin, Paul, Colm and Damien, her brother John, her grandchildren, relatives and many friends we extend our heartfelt sympathy.
Charity Night on Saturday
The Charity Night function deferred a couple of week back as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Pam Farrell will take place this Saturday night 24th August in Clarke’s Bar. The night is in support of the Friends of Asthma and everyone in the community is urged to come out and support the night. There will be tradition and a wider variety of music. All musicians are encouraged to come along and join in. It is hoped that this will be a memorable musical session. The evening will kick off at 7.30pm. There will be a host of spot prizes to be won on the night.

Remedial work Update
No sooner had my piece in last week’s notes been published but local councillor Sean Mimnagh was on to me telling me that the concrete slabs slippage have already been reported to Waterways Ireland. He said that he will raise the issue of roadway down to the harbour.
Sean also mentioned that there is some dumping going on at the second quarry and he is seeking to have that area blocked off to help alleviate the problem. Sean also told me of a leakage at the sewage plant beside the car park and he seen to it that it was repaired.
Table Quiz
The Rathcline Gaelic 4 Mothers and Others will hold a Table Quiz in Adie’s Bar on Saturday night next 24th August. The Rathcline Gaelic 4 Mothers and Others cater for ladies from all around the local communities and they seek support of the all communities to assist in the development of the club. The questions will be rolled out from 9pm and it will cost €40 for each table.
The panel of Rathcline Gaelic 4 Mothers and Others are a fun loving group and make each event a really enjoyable event and I am sure this will be no different.
Girls in Showbands
Last week’s the excellent weekly read Ireland’s Own had an article in it about ‘Girls in Showbands’. Prominently mentioned in the article was our very own and now California resident Patsy Fayne. Patsy in the 60’s was a member of the Roscommon showband ‘The Exciters’ and what was very uncommon and unique was that Patsy, a female, was also the bass player in the band. Following her time with The Exciters Patsy’s own band ‘Paddy Wagon’ released Sunday Bloody Sunday that went to No. 1 in the Irish charts and it was unique was that it was banned from the Irish airwaves. It was distinctive for getting to No. 1 in the charts while not getting played on the airwaves.
Patsy is hale and hearty and living in California and is regularly in touch with her home parish.
Book Launch
Wood of the Stony Land is a new book about to be launched on Saturday next 24th August at the Corlea Visitor Trackway Centre at 3.45pm. This is the first book by the author Martin Carberry and it is based on his growing up in the Bord na Mona housing estate of Derryhaun. Martin got his education in Cloontagh National School before going on to the Vocational School Lanesboro.
From a deeply rooted Derryhaun family, widely known for their Irish musical and dancing excellence Martin adds to the Carberry culture with his own book. He also includes 10 of his own oil paintings and relevant poems revealing the added artistic ability that flourishes within the Carberry family.
In 1971 his family moved to Manchester and later Martin returned to live in Donegal in 1985 where he lives to this very day. Martin never lost his love of his home community and the wonderful memories it gave him and this book tells of that story.
The book gets its name from where Martin grew up playing in the townsland of Derryglogher meaning the ‘wood of the Stony Land.
Saturday week should be a great event and everybody is welcome to go along and celebrate with one of our own.
Former resident passes away
It was with the greatest of sympathy we learned of the death on Tuesday last 13th August in Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe of Nora Brehony, Roscommon Town. Nonie as she was most commonly known was a native of Glinsk, Co. Galway. Nonie married Martin Brehony who worked on Bord na Mona and played corner back on the 1976 Championship winning team, They lived on the Green for a time before moving to Roscommon Town in 1992. She was a warm and friendly lady with an inimitable smile and a gentle spirit. She always had a great warm and welcoming smile. Nonie had a great devotion to her faith and she was a daily mass goer. She always had a very keen interest in the sporting activities of her native county and she always hung her county flag out in support. She will be sadly missed by all in our community that remember Nonie so fondly as she will be by her family and friends in Roscommon Town.
Nonie reposed in Smyth’s Funeral Home on Thursday last before being removed to the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon. Her funeral Mass of the Resurrection took place on Friday followed by burial in St. Coman’s Cemetery. To her husband Martin, daughter Mariece, grandchildren, Tara, Shauna and Maria, her sister Eileen, son-in-law David Hynes, relatives and friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

Great support for Derek
The 1st Transplant Football World Cup will take place between 8th and 14th September in Cervia, Italy a picturesque seaside town in the northern province of Ravenna on the east coast of Italy.
There is a great sense of pride for this historic event that we have on the panel our local man Derek Rutherford, Cnoc na Gaoithe. Derek has always been a very active athlete with himself and his wife Ronie (Masterson) taking on many endurance races.
Since his transplant Derek linked up with the transplant team where he is playing a leading role something that gives Derek and our community a great sense of pride. To be able to take part in the World Cup the team and management have to fundraise themselves to get the funding for accommodation and facilities for the duration of the World Cup.
Derek is the team goal keeper. In his younger days played in goals for Derry City and at a club in England for a time. This is his first time to return as a net minder in over 20 years. He is now getting expert tuition every week where he is training every week up in Darren Randolph goal keeping academy in Dublin. The rest of the training is done every week in Kilkenny. He is showing huge dedication to the team and we should acknowledge his efforts with our support of him.
Derek has his own player sponsorship cards out and he is banking on your generosity to help him raise the required funds. Derek is putting in so much in preparation to represent not only Ireland but also our community that we should replicate with our support. You are asked to be as generous as you can be and the sponsorship cards are in Johnston’s Pharmacy, Adie’s Bar, Clarke’s Bar and O’Brien’s Shop. Thank you in advance.
