Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Monday 29th July 2024

Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

Death

It was with great sadness we learned of the death at care of the staff at the Sacred Heart Care Home, Roscommon on Sunday 21st July of Mrs May O’Connor, St. Mary’s Terrace, Ballyleague. May who was 96 years old was a native of Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan and she was predeceased by her husband Jerry. In her younger Ballyconnell days May who had the singing voice of a songbird travelled Ulster and beyond entertaining many many people. She had a great love of music, the cinema, reading and she could not be beaten for her taste in style. May was a warm and friendly lady, an obliging and excellent neighbour who was always available to assist anyone in their time of need or support. She had a heart of gold, a broad beaming smile and greeting would warm up even the coldest of hearts. She had a tremendous devotion to her faith which was first and foremost for herself and her family. May was a proficient bookkeeper and after a couple of places of employment she came to Longford to work in Davis shop where she was to meet her Kerry man husband Jerry. They settled and raised their family of two boys and two girls in Ballyleague where Jerry was working in Lanesboro with ESB in the power station. May’s passing is particularly marked with extra sadness as on 1st May her son in law Sean Hanley, passed away and on the 1st July her son Jeremy passed away. It has truly been a harrowing seven weeks for the O’Connor family. To those of us that knew and remembered May, our hearts are filled with sadness on her passing.

Her remains reposed in Smyth’s Funeral Home on Tuesday evening and following Mass of the Resurrection in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague on Wednesday burial took place in Cloontuskert Cemetery. To her daughters Betty and Eileen, her son Bernard, her sister Kathleen Campbell relatives and friends we extend our sincere sympathy.

This is a new dining area and dedicated area for diners.

Oldest priest in Diocese dies

The oldest practicing priest in the Diocese of Elphin passed away peacefully in the care of the staff of Sligo University Hospital on Monday 22nd July. Fr. Dominick Gillooly, St. Anne’s Church, Sligo Town was a native of Mount Cashel. Fr. Dom, as he was most commonly known was predeceased by his parents Bridie and Tom, his brothers Fr. Peter, Fr. Tommy, John and his nephew David. Fr Dom never missed an opportunity to visit his family home place as well as keeping in touch with neighbours and friends. He was very proud of his community and his Roscommon heritage. To every generation in Sligo he was a most popular figure and it was a wonderful sight to see youngster’s high fiving him when they met him on the streets. He was 66 years a priest and he was totally devoted to his priestly vocation. Fr. Dom was a man of huge energy, a tremendous influence on many lives, with a strong desire to see education for the youth flourish. He was very active both inside and outside his parish, had a great empathy for everyone’s situation and was very hands on at all times not asking anyone to do something he would not do himself.

Fr, Dom reposed at Saint Anne’s Day Chapel on Friday, July 26th. A concelebrated Requiem Mass led by Bishop Kevin Doran took place on Saturday, in Saint Anne’s Church, Cranmore Road, Sligo, and burial followed in Saint Patrick’s Cemetery, Scarden, Strandhill Road, Sligo. To his sisters Anne, and Margaret, his sister-in-law Carmel, his clerical community, relatives, parishioners and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Sympathy

It was with great sorrow we learned of the death at Mullingar Regional Hospital of Agnes Hayes, Legar, Kinnegad, Co. Westmeath on Saturday 27th July. Previously Agnes and her husband John were landlords of the Pier Inn (Rakish Paddy), Lisnacusha where they ran a very successful business. She will always be remembered as a warm, friendly and lovely lady and her passing will sadden the hearts of all of those of us that remember Agnes and her time in our parish.

Agnes reposed at Darby’s Funeral Home, Main Street, Kinnegad, on Monday. Her Funeral Mass takes place on Tuesday at St. Mary’s Church, Kinnegad. Afterwards, burial takes place in St. Finian’s Cemetery, Clonard. To her husband John, her daughters Collette, June, Yvonne, and Madeleine, her son, John, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Shamrock 165

Shamrock 165 is a trilogy of books written by Sligo native Gavin Walsh on the first ever Aer Lingus plane crashed on Snowdonia National Park, Wales. The Aer Lingus, St. Kevin, on the 10th January 1952 suffered the first ever national air disaster when travelling to Dublin. At the time Aer Lingus was in its 16th year and this was its very first air crash. On board was local Rathcline lady Evelyn Belton which makes this book of great interest to locals.

This fascinating trilogy of books can be bought in O’Brien’s at a cost of just €65 for the three or individually Book 1 at €25, Book 2 at €20 and Book 3 at €30.

Be Alert

Over the past few weeks I have been told by a number of people about being approached by people asking to use their phone. Their modus operando appears to be that they will then say that they cannot get through on the mobile and ask if they had a landline. This means that they can get into people’s homes if you allow them use your landline. While inside your home if there is anything of value visible it becomes very tempting. If you are approached by anyone and in particular a stranger or two together asking you to use your phone the simple answer is no and under no circumstances allow anyone into your home. It is also very important that you do not entertain anyone telling you that they have no money and their electricity is about to be cut off. Please be very careful and wary.

World Transplant Football

The 1st Transplant Football World Cup will take place between 8th and 14th September in Cervia, Italy a picturesque seaside town in the northern province of Ravenna on the east coast of Italy.

It is wonderful for this historic event that on the panel is our local man Derek Rutherford, Cnoc na Gaoithe. Derek has always been a very active athlete and himself and his wife Ronie (Masterson) taking on many endurance races. Since his transplant Derek linked up with the transplant team where he is playing a leading role. To be able to take part in the World Cup the team and management have to fundraise themselves to get the funding for accommodation and facilities for the duration of the World Cup. To that end Derek is seeking your full support. He has his own player sponsorship cards out and he is banking on your generosity to help him raise the required funds. You are asked to be as generous as you can be and the sponsorship cards are in Johnston’s Pharmacy, Adie’s Bar, Clarke’s Bar and O’Brien’s Shop. Thank you in advance.

Tommy Fleming in Concert

Rathcline GAA hosts the legendary Tommy Fleming in St. Mary’s Church on Sunday 24th November at 8pm. The New York Times described Tommy as the ‘Voice of Ireland’ and to have someone of his stature coming to sing in our community is truly amazing. I know that the concert is a while away but don’t delay in buying or booking your tickets as they are selling very fast. Tickets are on sale online too and Tommy’s popularity means that those tickets will be snapped up by people from outside the area who follow him wherever he plays. A further allocation of 50 tickets arrived this week and already there are a good number sold. Online sales are available https://tommyfleming.com/concert-tickets/ and you must act fast as they are proving to be very popular. Tickets are for unreserved seating and they cost €35 each.
