Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Monday 24th June 2024

Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

Lord Mayor

In old money and for my generation it was always known as Lord Mayor but now that title has changed to Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council. Following the recent local elections the new council members met on Friday last for their inaugural meeting. At the meeting local man Mark Casey was elected to the office of Cathaoirleach for the coming year.

This is Mark’s second time holding this position the previous term was in 2012/15 and we wish him every success for a very successful term of office.

Traffic Restrictions

If you are planning to pass through or even come to Lanesboro/ Ballyleague on Saturday 6th July you are asked to note that this is the day of Lanesboro Triathlon Club’s Two Provinces Annual Triathlon and consequently you may encounter traffic restrictions. There will be road closure of limited access from the car park junction to the Strokestown Road junction and the Strokestown Road  R371 from Ballyleague to Scramogue from 10.45-14:00 and on the Rathcline Road from 11.30am to 1pm.

On the previous evening, Friday evening 5th July, there will be closure and restrictions for the Kidathon race on the Rathcline Road up to Harold’s Cross from 6.55pm until 8pm.

All-Ireland Quarter Final

Leading from the front is what we can say about Diarmuid Murtagh. All season Diarmuid’s form for the Roscommon team has be spectacular and never was this form needed as on Saturday last in Omagh when Roscommon took on Tyrone for a place in the All-Ireland Quarter Final. Once again, in the primrose and blue he did not fail to deliver with not only his scoring prowess but in his general play he showed exceptional leadership. Next weekend and in Croke Park Diarmuid and his teammates will travel with great hope and expectation of reaching the All-Ireland semi-final where they will take on Armagh. At the time of writing no venue had been fixed but I am sure a huge number from the area will travel to suoort Diarmuid and his teammates.

We wish Diarmuid, his teammates and management the very best of luck.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Betty and Ray Hogan and their family, Carrawroe, on the death of Betty’s brother Donie Spittalstown, Streamstown, Co. Westmeath who died on Thursday 20th June.

Class Reunion

On Saturday next 29th June we welcome back for a reunion the Leaving class of 1974 from the Convent of Mercy that will take place in Lanesboro celebrating the 50th anniversary of their Leaving Cert. The celebrations will commence with a Mass at 2pm in St Mary’s Church and this Mass will remember in particular three of their former classmates who have passed away since their last gathering when they were celebrating the 40th reunion; Kathleen Connerton, Mary Dowd and Rose Tully. August

Following mass, light refreshments will be served in the Yacht Bar, Lanesboro.

As plans are being put in place it would be great if those planning to attend would let Geraldine know immediately and also state whether you prefer tea and sandwiches or a salad buffet so that the catering can be arranged.

We hope the ladies have a terrific time and that the sun shines brightly on them on their return to Lanesboro.

Pizza Boy

Issue 4 of the very popular Pizza Boy is now on sale in O’Brien’s. Harry Kenny is just a nine year old and since his first published this comic the demand has continued to grow. Harry is a student in Cloontuskert National School and son of Paul and Amanda Kenny, Cloonadra.
