Lanesboro Ballyleague notes
More New Books for Christmas
There is really nothing better than reading the works of local authors and this Christmas has a plethora of excellent books available written by local authors. Books by local authors will make great Christmas presents and you will also be showing your support for the great efforts made by all of our local authors. New books have arrived during the week, and we should all be supporting our local authors. All the books by the local authors are all available in O’Brien’s.
Jack Harte, novelist, short story writer and playwright has just added to his vast array of books with the most recent publication of his latest writing just in time for the Christmas market. It will make for wonderful reading over the Christmas period.
In the Foul Rag – and – Bone Shop Jack has once again come up with another excellent read.
When Stones Speak is a local history book documenting all of the headstones and graves in the cemeteries of Killashee, Ballinakill and Clondra. The book, written by Luke Baxter and Hugh Farrell, with Jimmy Lennon and Mike Mulvihill was launched on Tuesday last in Longford County Library. Tremendous work went into the identification of every one of the headstones in the three graveyards from the very outset and that was no easy task.
The parishes of Rathcline and Kilgefin has many great links to the cemeteries and this book will be a tremendous source of historic records for all the families.
More Quirky Tales is another new book published by the participants of the Midlands Children’s Book writers and illustration group. Include in the writers is local author Andrew Knowles who has a story included in this book. This is an excellent children’s story book, and it would be ideal for story reading. The illustrations include pictures from the local community.
That prolific writer, Paddy Egan, once again has a new publication out for Christmas. This year’s publication is his recollection of the Covid times where he recollects through poems the memories relating to the day-to-day events from 2020 to 2022. Another great publication from Paddy and another worthy read.
New to our list is the recent arrival of Rose Moran’s book of poetry ‘In the Slant of a New Light’. You will all remember Rose as Sr. Rose who was part of the Mery nuns when they were in Lanesboro. Jack Harte’s Uneasy bedfellows and his local bestseller In the Wake of the Bagger amongst others are available. Ciaran Mullooly’s recent launch of his third book ‘The Future is Now’ is selling very fast and new stock has just arrived while a restock of Margaret Nohilly’s book of poetry ‘The Overlap of Times’ has it back on the bookshelves.
New stock arrived this week of the hugely popular Sliabh Bán written by Henry Owens, Longford Republican History and the Burkes and the Pollocks.
Christmas Greetings
I would like to wish all my readers a very Happy Christmas and a very special and healthy 2023. The year has brought many family changes over the year and to those that have lost family members I extend my deepest sympathy and assure you that your grief has been shared by us all in our community. There are a number of people in hospital at present as well as those that had visits there during the year and are in stages of recovery, we are remembering you and look forward to your recoveries making your life much easier. To everyone away from our community and cannot make it home we remember you and to you that through changes in family circumstances means your family home is no longer with us, but still read these notes, you are always remembered and the memories you left us with are forever cherished. On the brighter side there are numerous families that had reasons for celebration during the year, we hope that that happiness extends for many years ahead. For everyone that must work through the Christmas season ensuring that all services and hospitals are kept functioning we thank you and hope you too can enjoy some time off during Christmas or in the New Year.
To everyone that supported me in anyway during the past year with local news, comments, and information I thank you most sincerely. Without you the notes each week would be very short. A very special thank you to everyone for their continued support.
That Christmas may bring you all the happiness of the world and may 2024 be a time of many successes and achievements and you are graced with the best of health to enjoy the year.
Death
It with a great sadness we record the death on Saturday 9th December at Roscommon Hospice of Frank Kearns, Killavacken, Curraghroe. A native of Greystones, Co. Wicklow, he moved to Curraghroe about 20 years ago. Frank was a warm and friendly man who always made the time to chat with you ensuring you had his full attention. Frank was always the thorough gentleman and highly respected. He had a real warm and genuine smile that endeared him to everyone he met. He had a great interest in and excelled in the game of golf.
His remains reposed in Smyth’s Funeral Home, Roscommon on Tuesday. His remains were removed to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague on Wednesday for the Mass of the Resurrection which was followed by a private cremation. We extend our deepest sympathy to Bernie, his son Alan, haughtier June, brothers Ger and Martin, sisters Eileen and Catherine, his foster daughter Jacinta, relatives, and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to John and Mary Rice and daughters Siobhan and Jenny, Cloontuskert and their extended family on the death of John’s brother Gerry Rice, London on Saturday 9th December.
Mass for the repose of Gerry’s soul will be held in St. Brigid’s Church, Four-Mile-House on Saturday 6th January at 1.30pm with the burial of his ashes afterwards.
Death
It is very sad to relate the death from one of the stalwart families from our community at the Regional Hospital, Mullingar on Sunday 10th December. Mabel Riozzi formerly Mabel Murray from the Green and later Ballyleague. She was daughter of Jack and Jeanetta Murray and wife of Tom Riozzi all who predeceased her. Mabel started her employment with Mrs. Kelly in the local post office as a telephonist. She later transferred to the main Post & Telegraphs telephone centre in Drogheda. It was in Drogheda she met her husband Tom Riozzi, and they moved back to her home community where Tom opened what proved to be a very popular chip shop. Mabel was a warm and engaging lady who enjoys meeting locals and strangers alike. Her warm and welcoming greeting and smile was inimitable and it endeared her to everyone that had the pleasure to know her. Mabel was a wonderful friend and neighbour and most obliging to anyone in need of assistance.
Mabels remains reposed in Farrell’s Funeral Home on Tuesday and her Funeral Mass took place in the Church of the Holy rosary, Ballyleague. Following Mass her remains were removed to Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan. To her daughter, Martina, sons Roberto and GianCarlo, her brothers John, David, Danny, Willy, Sidney and Michael, sisters Helen and Irene, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.
Fascinating Interviews
Shauna O’Neill from Cloontuskert last weekend shared some very absorbing programming by RTÉ from the early days of Bord na Mona in this area.
The first two interviews were done on Thursday 2nd July 1953 when, ‘Who’s News’ a fortnightly programme, presenter Ronnie Walsh interviewed Patrick Ruddy, then assistant manager of Bord na Mona, where he spoke of the saving of turf that had to be saved between June and August. When asked about the number of workers he stated that there were between 700 and 800 people working with Bord na Mona on our Mount Dillon bog.
Part two of the interview, on the same day, was when Ronnie spoke to two students who travelled for summer work to the Mount Dillon bog. 18-year-old Eoin Hassett from Celbridge along with Trinity College law student Ben Odenze from Nigeria spoke of their time and the work they had to do. After a week’s work Eoin disclosed that after his lodgings were taken out of his wages his pay was £5, 4 shillings and 4 pence.
On 2nd October 1960 there was further interviews with two local men Marty McNally and Tony O’Flaherty. In describing Lanesboro RTÉ’s ‘Provincial News Round Up’ stated that Lanesboro was the fastest growing town in the country. Instead of people leaving Ireland for foreign shore they were migrating to live and work in Lanesboro.
Marty Mc Nally the local hotelier told of the influx of anglers and workers to the area and that the hotel was busy all year round. He spoke of the amount of fishermen coming, for the first time, to Lanesboro from England for the fishing Some English fishing clubs even wanted to book for accommodation for 100 anglers per week for the fishing season such was the quality of the fishing and the demand for the quality fishing we had then.
Local businessman Tony O’Flaherty said that the population had trebled from 1950 to 1960 and that because of Bord na Mona and ESB the area was thriving. He said that it brought to him a great boost in business with the numbers relocating. There were many job opportunities directly apportioned to both companies and the wages were excellent for the time.
All in all, the links were a wonderful record of the growth and employment opportunities in the community from the 1950’s and it was great to hear the voices of those fore runners of Local Development Association and our community who did a great job in promoting our community.

Community Games is primarily a parent driven local organisation with parents anxious to ensure that the Community Games is good for their youngsters and their equally talented friends.
This is the time of the year that the AGM’s for both local Community Games groups takes place, and it is hugely important that all parents support their kids by getting involved in the formation of the committee for the coming year. It is very important to attend the AGM’s if only to show your support to the incoming committee. If you have recently arrived in our community the Community Games gives you that wonderful opportunity to meet and get to know locals through the involvement of their youngsters.
