Triathlon Weekend

This was another fabulous time in Lanesboro and Ballyleague when the local Lanesboro Triathlon Club hosted their annual Two Provinces Sprint Triathlon weekend.

Proceedings commenced on Friday evening when 96 youngsters between the ages of 8 and 15 took part in the Kidathon. There was tremendous excitement and no lack of effort expended by the youngsters in the swim, cycle and run. As usual the event was thoroughly enjoyed by all participants and the smiles on their faces at the end told its own story.

Saturday saw the Two Provinces Triathlon with a huge number of entrants all eager to record great times and enjoy the hospitality of the Triathlon Club. From very early morning there was the sight of the huge number of yellow vested stewards manning parking and their event management posts. The wind was high from early morning and made the first leg of a 750m swim tough to say the least. The cycle was no different as the cyclists at they embarked on the 20k cycle. The wind was in the backs on the way out to Scramogue but the return was torturous with the strong wind making every hill a real challenge. The 5km run to Harold’s Cross and back gave some respite from the wind. While it was windy there was no cold or rain and for the competitors and the supporters it was a grand day to be in Lanesboro and Ballyleague.

People travelled from all over the country and it was wonderful to hear the fulsome praised heaped on Lanesboro Triathlon Club and especially Shane Healy and Mick Shorthall and their organising committee for a job really well done. “A great course, a well organised race in every aspect, to win a trophy in my age group and to get food afterwards was just wonderful” was the excited comment of one lady in the shop afterwards as she was showering compliments on the organisation of the event.

Well done to everyone on another hugely successful event.

Former Resident Passes Away

It is with great sadness we learned of the death in the care of Roscommon Hospice of Vera Lindsey, Essex Lawn, Roscommon Town on Saturday 8th July.  Vera was from the much loved and respected family right from the early days of the Bord na Mona houses in Cloontuskert. She was predeceased by her parents Pat and Sarah, her brother Seán (Tosh). Vera had been in ill health for the past number of years, borne with a great dignity and strength. She will be sadly missed by all of us that remembered and knew her growing up in our community and by her family. To her daughter Sarah, Sarah’s father Kevin Swan, sisters Mary and Christina, brothers JT, Pat and Paul, relative and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Congratulations to the senior team who on Wednesday last in Cashel winning Division 2 and secured promotion to Division 1 for next year’s league.  The panel is making great strides with the excellent management team of Enda Lyons, Neill O’Connor and Stephen Rooney ably assisted by physio Ray Cox.

The team now moves forward to their next hurdle of the first round of the senior Championship. They will take on Mullinalaghta in Edgeworthstown on Saturday 29th July. This is a great bunch of players having achieved part one of their goals and while they are young they are developing into a fine team.

Oscars

As you may already know the Oscars is planned to take place in the Longford Arms Hotel on Sunday 29th October. This promises to be a great night of fun and frolics and this is an occasion not to be missed and definitely a date for your diary.

If you were to pass the club grounds on Friday last you would think there was a big match on such was the crowd in and around the clubhouse and grounds. What was taking place you might ask? It was the Oscar’s director Tom Dempsey meeting all those taking part in the Oscars to meet and read from scripts so that he can apportion people for each of the scripts and to create teams for the filming that will take place in mid-September. On Friday there was over 80 young and old there to meet Tom.

As this is not only a great club event it is a wonderful community event and it is a great opportunity for anyone from the area to get involved and have all the fun that the Oscars brings.
